Redbeard and the pirates

Blacklight Braille! Dozens of albums (it seems), poobahs of the Cincy scene, legendary live appearances, 20 or more years of sui generis "fringe rock" and not a mention on AMG.

briania, Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Well now you've caught my attention, tell me more about 'em. Webpage?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Height isn't listed there; Bow 'n' Arrow isn't on there; Grand Buffet's information is paltry and there's only a review of one of their four recent releases.

And those are just the bands I'm tight with.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 24 April 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister was regularly talking with one of the Grand Buffet dudes for a while, as I think I've muttered before. So what are they up to these days?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I sure there are ILXers more qualfied than I to provide info on Blacklight Braille (hello Cincinnati!). I've got a couple of their albums, and attended one of their medievalist psych-freakout happenings many years ago. Their guiding light, Owen Knight, was also involved, I think, in the equally freaky Bitter Blood Street Theater.
There's some background, along with access to a few of their many, many recordings, here:

Sounds like something she'd do. She actually turned me on to Lightning Bolt, so.

Damn, really? I'll have to change that!

Just touring about a bit. I shot a music video with them in November, but I'm not editing it, so I don't know when it'll be out. Their next full length should be along in a few months or so; last I heard, it was to be titled King Vision. They also told us during the shoot what their new aliases were going to be (they always drop new ones for each disc), but it was something relating to old acquaintances of theirs, so I can't remember what they will be. As far as I know, their children's album, Fox and Gorilla, has been on the cusp of release for two years now. Dunno what's been holding it up, though. Lord Grunge also dropped an awesome solo set last July in B'more - hopefully some of that material will see the light of day sooner or later - "Friday Night" is classic.

As for Height and Bow 'n' Arrow, they're actually teaming up together as a unified group (they already were sorta interconnected on their recent musical ventures recorded and live) and have an EP coming up soon. Discogs for each go like so: Height released Height (2000) and I Have a Gun (2003); Bow 'n' Arrow released I Saved My Life (2003). And for the trivia-minded, Bow 'n' Arrow is the alias of Mickey Freeland, younger brother of Chris Freeland from the Oxes.

Risco Connection, they of the supoib 1979 dubbed-out opium haze cover version of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now".

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 April 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty much every artist on Day By Day Entertainment.

GM Grimm. (on there as mf grimm, latest album not listed)
Rodan. (on there but no music listed)
Binkis. (not on there at all. latest album has some nice songs. album probably a 3 star on the amg scale.)
Jon Doe. (debut Meet Jon Doe is fire. MF DOOM, GRIMM, etc. great album. album and artist not on amg)
and many more...

OK, these might not be the biggest names, but they are making quality hip-hop. AMG needs to get in touch with this label!

I'll second A Nairn re Malice Mizer. The visual kei scene deserves attention. My American teenage daughter & her friends debate Malice Mizer vs. Dir En Grey with the intensity of Bowie vs. Bolan.
