What kind of music does Muslimgauze play?

Dear readers, What does the artist/band Muslimgauze' music sound like? I've read that their music is a combination of electronica and ethnic music from the Middle East. I've also read that their music is quite repetitive and noisy. Which is correct? One other thing: Is Muslimgauze a band or just one person?

Thanks in advance.

Basically, one guy, Bryn Jones, who died a couple years ago after releasing a ton of music. Musically, all of the above. Experimental electronic music, ambient music with some beats and noise, is what I'd consider it's base. The middle eastern influence is also certainly there. Muslimgauze was also known for his extreme political bent on hot issue like Israel and the Arab states.

Isn't this the THIRD Muslimgauze thread on ILM in the space of a month. Poor old B. Jones is getting more attention now than he ever did when he was alive!

He's from Bradford, or so the story goes.

The 3rd thread, with about 10 posts all day. Not many fans in our midst.

It's his own fault.

I love what Muslimgauze I've heard, but know next to nothing about the guy. Erm, he RoXoR?

(Completely on a tangent, is RoXoR applicable to dance music? It seems to apply to abstract concepts ie Surrealism roX0r- but I find it a little incongruent in this context)

roXoR is probably ok, but 'rocks' would be an insult i reckon

i think people here like the few Muslimgauze tracks they may have heard, but it's the daunting task of buying material that is the reason for so few posts.

Both "Jaal Ab Dullah" and "Muslimgauze meets Systemwide at the City of the Dead" are great.

Muslimgauze made bloodless electronic music, supposedly drawing on Arabic music (though as someone who has listened to a lot of the latter, I hear none of the virtues of Arabic music in Muslimgauze's recordings). From a graphic design perspective, the CDs are usually well-packaged, with an ongoing theme of support for Muslim extremists. He may have been sincere, but it makes me a little suspicious that he made so much boring music and then added excitement to it by putting pictures of Khomeini and so forth on the cover and using titles like "Vote Hizballah" (sp?). But I am coming to this music as someone who doesn't like most electronica, but loves a great deal of Arabic music (before everyone started using the same drum machine).

i don't care if the guy's dead (although that's sad) - his misic sucked - it's really boring & uncommunicative and i can only imagine it working for you if you're some sort of acid casualty who gets off on people playing bongos badly.

three years pass...
dude! Mr Muslimgauze is dead? But my beloved bought one of his records only the other day. It is called "No Human Rights For Arabs In Israel". Makes you think, eh?

He's been very very dead for a while.

Hm, weird I didn't post on this thread earlier. Everyone should get Zul'm at least, it's one of his best releases and there's not much off-putting rhetoric on the sleeve for those concerned about such things.

TOMBOT not to thread, based on his reaction to my mentioning Muslimgauze in another thread the other month.

The double-lp 'Veiled Sisters', though very ambient-y, err, "roX0rs"...
