The other day I turned it on hoping for an old Wings track, and heard Simon Mayo playing dance music, for goodness' sake.

next thing you know they'll trade in their edison cylinders for those shiny, round pieces of plastic! a yi yi...whadda world...whadda world...

Personally I won't hear a word said against it.

Personally I won't hear a word said on it. Har.

PF, have you tried Magic FM?

Nick, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

when Magic FM was Melody FM it was much better. the station has gone steadily downhill, and now plays the Shitehouse Family about once an hour. however lack of DJs is a huge point in it's favour

Radio 2 is a bit of an odd station at the moment. It's a bit like Radio 1 in a way when that it's ruthlessly seeking a younger demographic, the 30-40 somethings rather than the 50-60 year olds. So you get odd stuff like Friday night is music night playing light classical and the following morning Jonathon Ross playing SFA and the Pistols.

I can't say I listen to it a lot but the specialist programmes, Humphrey Lyttleton on Jazz, Paul Jones on blues, Mark Lamaar on reggae are well worth checking out.

At least they haven't given Bruno Brookes a job (yet).

The last time I listened to Radio 2 I was led astray by what I _thought_ was The Walker Brothers. Turning it up and starting to tape my feet, this horrible whining voice began breaking into my ears. What was it? It was fucking Tim wanking Wheeler, that's what it was. Aaaagh.

emil.y, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, that would be tap my feet...

emil.y, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who's Tim Wheeler? do you mean that Walker Brothers-sampling Ash song?

the Soul programmes are good too, especially the presenters they get - Barry White etc

m jemmeson, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, the guy from Ash.

"Cay-ndy, don't you know it's alright to sing through your nasal passages?"

Ugh.

I shall return, next time I hear something on R2 that's too up-to- date.

the pinefox, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Humphrey Lyttleton is everything that's wrong w/ jazz coverage in the UK.

Andrew L, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Latest crime Simon Mayo, again, on Robbie Williams / The Corrs. Once again, I suggest that this is far too up-to-date and belongs on R1 if anywhere.

Too much (new) Elton on R2 as well.

Listened to Maconie's show on Radio 2 last night. He played some great stuff - Augustus Pablo ('King Tubby's Meets Rockers Uptown' - wonder if that has ever been played on R2 before), The Band, Steely Dan, a fantastic Pete Atkins track, and Wishbone Ash (something from 'Argus' ?) Had never heard the Ash before - pretty ok in a post-Led Zep/BOC metal-psych-prog way - but now know for certain that Big Star piss all over 'em, thank you very much Mr M. Sinker!

Heh.

mark s, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Latest good news: grate hour on Irving Berlin on Sunday; good big band stuff; Peel on pop history not being wilful and perverse; Miles Davis docu. Even Steve Wright played a couple of good songs. 'When Smokey Sings' reminded me of Deacon Blue, and 'Anchorage' really reminded me of Lloyd Cole.

seven years pass...

Another resignation

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 7 November 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

ten months pass...

Chris Evans is to replace Sir Terry Wogan as Radio 2's breakfast DJ, the veteran broadcaster has announced.

The 71-year-old broke the news to his listeners just after this morning's 0800 news bulletin, calling it "the hardest thing I've ever done".

James Mitchell, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:26 (sixteen years ago)

I give that Chris Evans show six months tops.

Tuncay Stryder (Matt DC), Monday, 7 September 2009 08:22 (sixteen years ago)

four years pass...

Steve Lamacq will disappear from the schedule, with Nigel Ogden: The Organist Entertains and Listen to the Band, presented by Frank Renton, replacing his Thursday evening Rock College show.

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 11:42 (twelve years ago)

Lamacq, who presents BBC 6 Music's drivetime show, will return to Radio 2 in 2014 for a celebration of Britpop.

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 September 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

because at all other times, Radio 2 is a damning indictment of Britpop.
