i like the idea of g-unit being generic southern guy, generic new york guy (this is tricky because there are two right now, i think, but if yayo ever gets out he can just be made a shady/aftermath a&r guy-- is shawn pen from new york?) and, if game joined, a generic west coast guy. i like the story in xxl about teaching himself to rap after he got shot, sending his man to get all the classic rap records and studying them, learning how to rap. he's decent, i guess. he can ride a beat and doesn't embarrass himself but he's not polished. he's all over the place, too-- back to back hosting kay slay mixtapes and sharing an xxl cover, just recently.

game ft. 2pac - one day at a time is probably the hottest i've heard him (from the second kay slay tape he hosted [his opening freestyle on the nuthin but a g thang beat is terrible])

Joe Budden vs. The Game

He can rap too slow for his own good - if he spits a really dumb or corny line it's just right in your face, hanging there, for what seems like forever.

four years pass...

l.a.x. is really good and i didn't like doctor's advocate at all, really

anyone else heard it?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 08:45 (seventeen years ago)

i still wish game was a better rapper, right now he's getting over on passion and the fact that he's evolved (probably devolved personally) into one of the most complex personalities in rap and raps openly about it. he's like the anti-rick ross in that sense

basically like this one better cuz it's got grimier and grittier beats, not so much of the whiny synth aping that plagued the bad tracks on doctor's advocate

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 08:47 (seventeen years ago)

Some of it's okay. He doesn't have an original bone in his body, and he's not funny or insightful at all, but he's really good at ripping off other rappers' flows, which works for him on the track with Nas, the one with Wayne, and the one where he has a verse in 2pac's voice and with his flow and then Biggie's. I can't understand why he didn't try to do anything with the Eazy-E one, though.

I agree with Jordan but I was hoping there'd be more about how messed up he apparently is.

Also it's depressing how completely wrecked DMX sounds.

antexit, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 08:51 (seventeen years ago)

The track with Weezy - "My Life" - is awesome.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

even the string of r&b loverman songs in the middle (thought i was listening to t.i. vs t.i.p. for a second) isn't as shitty as you'd imagine

i don't remember that much about doctor's advocate specifically, but here are the songs i kept from it:

- doctor's advocate
- wouldn't get far
- why you hate the game

the rest i'd consider to be mediocre or bad, and i remember thinking that a lot of the songs sounded like really amateurly done rips of dre tracks, though i couldn't specifically tell you which ones anymore, and obv i know that not all of them were like that

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think he's a bad rapper either, i think he oscillates between good and great, just wish he stayed in great more often

this is probably the wrong thing to say about the game also probably inherent in listening to him, but a whole album of well done or not well done dre rips + him rapping all the time about dre and the west coast etc etc seems really cloying to me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

as opposed to the production here and maybe on the documentary

getting over cloyingness= inherent in listening to the game, i mean

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe it's not so much that he's a bad rapper as a bad writer. His flows are pretty good on this album. But come on. His punchlines are terrible, a good 15% of his rhymes don't rhyme, the constant stanning about rap music stopped being cute two albums ago (though I guess having a rapper who really, really loves rap music is better than the alternative, Lupe Fiasco), and he's constantly saying stupid things. Random line playing right now:

"By now you gotta be wet/Like the ocean after the sun sets"

there you have it, folks, courtesy of The Game: the ocean is wet.

deej, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

no, the game's point is that the ocean is wetter after the sun sets. in this he skilfully captures an elusive truth about perspective and reality, and of the darkness within and without. cough.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

thing abt the game is he such a supreme weirdo. so overly earnest. absolutely no irony or sense of humor at all. you get the feeling hes prob diagnosable w/some personality disorder. martin luther king had a left eye had a aaliyah had a.. o_O dude one of these things is not like the others. he doesnt even realize people are laughing at him much less understand why. he named his album after a guy who wouldnt even give him a track for it. its that looney momentum that makes him sort of compelling.

uh oh I'm having a fantasy, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I totally don't buy the narrative that being a self-contradictory studio gangsta who can't keep his story straight for two interviews in a row suddenly makes him a complex, fascinating character in spite of his subpar rapping.

-- Al (Alex In Baltimore), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:56 (1 year ago) Link

some dude, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

no one's taking it to the "complex & fascinating" level though are they. i do find him entertaining though - sarge is right about the cloying game persona, though it's not so much about getting over it as engaging with him to whatever extent. you can enjoy him as a sometimes endearing gossipblog trainwreck, or you can enjoy him in displaced homage to what he's going for like deej said, or you can just enjoy him loosely as a determined sort of rapper you don't get many of these days.

tbh though all this stuff made doc's advocate fairly offputting at the time (loved the storch single with the ridiculous dre impersonation, got bogged down with all the press after that) but since then it's grown to be pretty good. i've only listened to l.a.x once so far but it seems like easily his worst album - the beats seem neither here nor there really, and he sounds pointless. (srsly thought my computer was crashing when that terrible newcleus flip with luda came on.)

we do learn he has two dogs called biggie & pac though.

calling game a subpar rapper assumed that par is a lot higher than it is these days.

i'm with everyone, i kinda love the dude/he kinda bugs the shit outta me. but yeah he's sorta genuinely bonkers and he CARES so much it's compelling in a way.

the constant references thing does drive me nuts though, like every other line.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

also he is probly the only rapper alive who really SHOULD collabo with linkin park or something

fuck that would be great

r|t|c, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

look, i'm not trying to say that game is like, some special super complex omg crazy character, but compared to many of his contemporaries— dj khaled crew, for instance— he raps candidly and openly about his conflictions, and i find this compelling, as i do with rappers like wayne, kanye, jeezy and t.i.. now, his problem, as is obvious, is that lyrically, he's not on par with either of those four.

and yes, i find it compelling that he puts a song on his post-g unit album where he raps drunk and outs himself as an alcoholic. i dont think that makes him a fake conflicted "studio gangsta" or whatever bullshit alex is talking about

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

I have downgraded from "OMG" to merely ":)"

some dude, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

I'm trying pretty hard to like this record.
Beats are mostly on point, perhaps on par with Advocate.
Love how he doesn't hide behind an infallible, untouchable persona but instead hints at and touches on vulnerability and 'humanness'.
Rhymes are fairly consistent; and the slow, weighted delivery gives real emotion to a few perfect lines:
'Like I needed my father, but he needed a needle'
Bloody love that one.
But why the fuck does The Game still, after 3 albums, insist on dropping a billion names a song. I hate how he goes so far as to adjust his selection of names to match with the producer or the guest or the theme of each track. RZA, New-York and Wu on the Meth track; Kanye all over the place, on his own prod. and everywhere elsewhere.
Sure, some of the references are decent (if a little cliche or overplayed) - Used to love H.E.R and the such like, but there's just too much for me.
I know he's done this all his career, but can't he at least try to hold an album on his own rather than trying to assert himself as the rapper who's all things to all men?

"By now you gotta be wet/Like the ocean after the sun sets"

what's wrong with this line

It was just an example of a dumb line that happened to be on at the time, but:

1. The ocean isn't any wetter after the sun sets, "sets" was just apparently the best rhyme he could think of, apparently, for "wet," which is pretty pathetic

2. comparing someone's vadge wetness to the ocean doesn't really contribute anything to your idea of relative wetness, since the ocean isn't actually any wetter than, say, a puddle or a glass of celery soda.

antexit, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

apparently.

antexit, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

Who else would bookend his album with spoken word from another MC?

The fact that DMX--in full-on prayer mode--is the MC makes this one of the best ideas in recent rap history. No hyperbole.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 September 2008 05:34 (seventeen years ago)

fwiw I'm with j0, I feel like Game is rawer & more compelling in rapping about personal shit. If not as skilled as contempos like Kanye (and that's saying something), he's at least even more candid: if not for the title track on the last record, I don't think Kanye could have gotten away with the considerably tamer "Big Brother," for example.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 05:58 (seventeen years ago)

i just finished writing a long ass review of lax, but lax has way better beats. i thought he seemed kinda like this circus clown type west coast mascot when he was rapping all over these fake dre tracks on doctor's ad. there isn't so much of the psychodrama on lax which is cool, and it gets kind of long but its maybe the most consistent rap non mixtape ive heard this year

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 September 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 2 September 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, album's alright, but generic west coast beats w/ game not holding his tongue for shit beats the hell outta generic generi-rap beats w/ game just saying not much. Lovin' the Raekwon, Bilal & Common joints tho.

Had to pull out "300 Bars & Runnin'" after this, still the best thing he's done.
