heh, since someone was asking about the dylan album, how about the Leonard Cohen one that just came out. I'm not sure how ILM feels about him...

He's great, new album is good, and btw it's available on vinyl.

and while we're at it.
can anyone else not get into his spector- produced album (death of a ladies man?) whilst loving most of his other stuff?

I love Death of A Ladies Man. The second side is damn near perfect. I can't get into anything else, save his first one, and even then if it's not on vinyl I can't listen to it.

That said, I have the new one, but haven't listened to it yet.

I like "Death of a Ladies Man" too. Don't know why it's so disparaged.

It's pretty good, but doesnt seem to have the louche wit of I'm your Man or the wry cynisism of The Future. Just a wee bit too one-paced and the arrangements are predictable.

However, I'm giving it a few more listens before I decide if it ruins my opinion that Cohens albums are enjoyable (in several senses of the word) in reverse chronological order).

three months pass...
This thread does not do the latest Leonard Cohen justice. "Ten New Songs" is a masterpiece. Cohen's voice reaches unprecedented depths here. The lyrics are beautifully poetic as always. Sharon Robinson is a perfect duet and background singer partner. The instrumentation is electronic but that is not disturbing. The music is absolutely unspectacular and the arrangement is almost low-fi. Muzak-like sounds float around Cohen's bass and stress its gravity. A terrific album.

just got this album today; it's very monotonous at first, but the constant textures call out the subtlies of each song incredibly well after a few listens. the sound is rich and gorgeous.

the songs that stand out at first:
in my secret life
a thousand kisses deep
by the rivers dark
alexandra leaving
the land of plenty
