Best song of Prince's career? I think so. I remember a thread somewhere where several people complain about the guitar solo at the end, but I love that solo, especially how you just don't see it coming.

I remember either Jordan Knight or Joey McIntyre covering this, except as a slow ballad. I was repulsed.

My favorite, yes.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

not his best, no, but def in the top 10, maybe top 5.

he just performed a bit of it on acoustic on that mtv special. (boy are they pushing the hell out of musicology or what?) it's totally a cliche, but it really does point out (again) what an amazing songwriter he'd still be if you stripped away the image, the dancing, the accumulated mystique, the bands, the innovations, etc etc.

The acoustic solo set during the show I just saw was worth the price of admission alone.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

(in other words, if prince was a spotty, chubby, awkward guy with two left feet, he'd still have had a hell of a career for himself as behind the scenes figure.)

and while he didn't play this number (which is indeed a classic, though I don't know if it'd make my personal top 10 though it beats many other artist's top 5), he did do bits of "Cream," "Raspberrey Beret" and "Little Red Corvette" this way.

He also performed "Sometimes It Snows In April" ALL THE WAY THROUGH and if there was a chance I was gonna lose it during the show it was right then.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan Knight's version eradicated every ounce of goodwill he had inspired with that first solo single of his. Also the world's, evidently. I haven't heard a peep since.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

he's making his comeback as we speak (no shit).

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you do realize he's Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis's Bubba Sparxxx

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(not really, but ha ha)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

so I'm guessing Jordy's round 2 is gonna be his Deliverance. Get excited!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ummm...SCRATCH THAT.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, that's just depressing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I refuse to believe Jordan could sing "I'll Be Loving You Forever" today unless Kanye's helping out on pitch control.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I like trying to figure out which silhouette is which New Kid. Joey's cleary the midget in the sleeveless jacket but otherwise I'm stumped.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"...Best example is Knight's take on the massive hit "Hangin' Tough," which is saved from disaster by keeping it low-key"

can someone please download this track and give a more detailed description?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Prince song, yes.

djdee2005, Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"can someone please download this track and give a more detailed description?"

Download, shmownload! That'd be no different from stealing money out of Jordan's wallet. No, I BOUGHT the damn thing for my wife, who's an old-school fan but who seemed less-than-thrilled when I gave her this CD.

In re "Hangin' Tough," the Disc 1 version is fairly shitty; it's got one of those fake mideastern beats with a flute line or something, but no interesting synth lines or weird percussion things like you'd find with Timbaland. Also they say "remix" a lot. The European remix on Disc 2 is much better--stomping beat, big techno synths, and the "Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa" seems much more a powerful statement of intent than it does on the American one. And no wonder--this raw power was executive produced by Jack White and arranged by Brix, in a bizarre display of Jordan getting back to his indie roots. (Or maybe Jack views him as a Loretta-type legend...)

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This from the liner notes:

"At one of our recent weekly board meetings[!], held to decide what we were going to do about liner notes for this CD you now hold in your hands, a number of different ideas were bandied about. One thing we all agreed upon was that we didn't think it appropriate to have some famous pop musicologist [!] write some dry notes about the unexplainable..." so instead they had fans write up memories of what NK meant to them. I'm not wading through those; I just wanted to point out Jordan's use of the passive voice.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't rank "I could Never Take The Place Of YOur Man" as one of the top 5 songs on _Sign O' The Times_, let alone one of the top 5 in Prince's catalogue!

Top 5 on _SOTT_:

1. "Adore"
2. "If I Was Your Girlfriend"
3. "Housequake"
4. "Play In The Sunshine"
5. "Forever In My Life"

Honorable mention to "Sign 'O The Times", "It", "Hot Thing", "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night", "The Cross", and "Starfish And Coffee"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cover Girl," their best song, sounds really good on the European disc, more a modern rock arrangement, though the Disc 1 sounds anemic. Really, their biggest problem (apart from not that many good songs) was always thin production that exposed their inability to sing ballads. (Some of that early Jackson 5/"Candy Girl" inspired stuff is inarguable, though.) The European Jack White disc seems to right some of those wrongs.

And that Prince song is good, but better in its single version.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

AAAARGH I forgot "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker"! "Forever In My Life" gets bumped into the honorable mention section.

The worst song on _SOTT_ is a toss-up between "ICNTTPOYM" and "Slow Love".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I far prefer the faster "live" single to the album version. I put the latter on a mixtape for a friend some years ago and it was a complete momentum-killer.

Somehow managed to avoid Jordan's cover, which I'm sure is a good thing.

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not great, but it isn't the apocalypse that people are making it out to be.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Prince on his "Hit and Run" tour, where his sax man was Najee, the black Kenny G. Prince blasts out an amazing "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man," then gets to the guitar solo part and shouts "Take it Najee!" Cue lite jazz denoument. Prince still saved it, but still. Yuck.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This is my favorite Prince song, hands down.

Are any of you familiar with the middling-at-best cover on one of the older Soul Asylum records? The one before their big breakthrough into MTVdom? The music portion is great, but the vocal is handled by their producer, who sounds like a coked up Tom Jones. Actually, this might have been the Goo Goo Dolls a couple albums before they got big. Either way, the song bites and makes me mad that they sort of trample on the greatness of the Prince version.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was Goo Goo Dolls back when they had a chance at being okay.

Buster (mokey), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And the singer is a lounge singer the band knew called The Incredible Lance Diamond.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that I think about it, that Goo Goo Dolls album was pretty good. I forgot about that Plimsouls cover until i just went to Allmusic. I might have to reacquire... lately I seem to be re-purchasing all the late 80s/early 90s stuff I sold off years ago. Me = dumbass.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that cover was fairly amusing, but suggesting that the goo goo dolls once had a chance at being okay may be overstating things a bit.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I stand corrected.

Buster (mokey), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That guitar solo sounds like the Royal Trux.
The Cross ... trumps Spacemen 3.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst song on _SOTT_ is a toss-up between "ICNTTPOYM" and "Slow Love".

I definitely agree with "Slow Love" but I'd definitely put "The Cross" (depending on my mood) and "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" beneath "ICNTTPOYM" (cuz Cat, Cat, we don't need you to rap).

God is SOTT a fuckin' spectacular album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I read an interview w/Boy George in which he says this song reminded him of Orange Juice. I can't listen to it the same way ever again
