Trent Reznor - justification for infanticide?

What can I say, I fucking hate that pasty faced talentless charlatan whelp and every dysfunctional American foible he stands for.

Me, I love the guy. And he's got great taste in cover songs -- "Memorabilia" by Soft Cell, "Metal" by Gary Numan, "Physical (You're So)" by Adam Ant and even "Get Down, Make Love" by Queen. All of which happen to be from the UK. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He got me through about a year of high school. Pretty Hate Machine and Broken stand up as classics, but I just find The Downward Spiral boring and irritating these days (except, of course, for the deliciously overwrought "hurt") -- and collecting all the Halos was my introduction to the notion of being a completist. "The Perfect Drug" is top-notch single. Broken is still fun to thrash around to and play mock-rockstar. Also, his production on the Lost Highway soundtrack is beyond reproach (said soundtrack also featuring the last really decent Pumpkins single). At my High School prom, my date and I requested NIN songs from the DJ all night. No such luck.

Also, Ned, you forgot the NIN cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls," Joy Division being, also, from the UK. Is Trent a secret dandy? Watch the "Perfect Drug" video and see for yourself.

Trent knows (or knew) how to do up a tune. His best cover hasn't even been mentioned yet, probably cuz it goes off the anglophile theme (and wasn't recorded with NIN): "Supernaut". Best NIN cuts: "Last", "Burn". I stopped listening to NIN, actually, not so much because of Trent's childish antics (which would've been enough, granted, the man's as insufferable as David Fincher), but because the more I listened to it, the more I wanted the music to get harder and noisier. All the poppiness that drew me in ended up pissing me off cuz I saw it as getting in the way. Put Teenage Jesus and the Jerks on immediately after Broken, Sterling, it'll sound like the greatest music ever made. It sounds to me like the greatest music ever made anyway, though, so context might have nothing to do with it.

Hey Otis, what's not Anglophile about a Black Sabbath cover? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*thwack* Excuse the 2:00 am drunken missteps . . .

Otis Wheeler, Saturday, 17 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the rightful 90s heir of pink floyd. and i mean that as a horrible, horrible, horrible insult.

ethan padgett, Saturday, 17 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never said T&J the J weren't great, just that they were offensive. Also note that if you called them "the greatest music ever produced" in their heyday, Lydia would probably have asked you if she could shit on your face, and then told you to go choke on your own (or better yet, someone else's) vomit.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 17 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know. She used to be such a hottie. I never would've had the nerve to talk to her though.

Otis Wheeler, Saturday, 17 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Sterl and I came very close to getting all those Halos, but gave up after eight or so. There will always be a "Remember when?" feeling about NIN, and Trent Reznor. I can't find it in myself to hate him.

FUN JIMMY THE MOD FACT A friend of mine does the NIN website. He dropped out after freshman year, traveled on the European Tour and started banging groupies. He was at the MTV Music Video Awards and didn't come by to say 'hi.' He's better than me in this way.

JM, Saturday, 17 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh that's just so rock 'n' roll. Fucking fat-goth, dysfunctional American groupies without enough self-respect to realise that having Trent Reznor, or any of his acolytes dick's inside you amounts to absolutely fucking nothing in reality. He thinks he's some sort of tough guy too, I'd love to join his band and put him in a fucking body cast. Buying and recording in Manson's house, trading on that whole psychopathy / murder / morbidity thing that seems to afflict American misfits - HE IS ONE OF THE PIGGIES!!! CAN't YOU ALL SEE? HE's BROUGHT HOME THE FUCKING BACON!!

Billy Manson Bundy Cheesegrater Casper, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yes let's use fat goth chick as a stereotypes that's mature oh yeah they are oh SO FAT.

on a separate point, i can't help it even tho he whines you gotta realize that WE ALL WHINE just not all of us have the musical tallent to whine on a CD and get payed for it, he's a depressed alcoholic man who sit around twiddling with instuments to make himself feel better and it connects with people, i can't call him a genius but i can't call him a baby either, i mean you write about what you know and feel. so what if what he feels is depression and hatred whether it be selfhatred or hated of somthing else.

Mog, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whaddaya mean "infanticide", the fucker attained adulthood didn't he? Still, it's never too late. It's always a buzz when rock stars die, & he'd be a pretty good one (not famous enough to be a REALLY good one).

D.Zarakov, Monday, 19 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not really a fan, but I'd say that if he managed to get such a reaction out of ya, he's probably succeeded in his goal. In that respect he's a success: Making an impression. Wheras Marilyn Manson is well on his way to being forgotten, I think Trent Reznor will remain in the public conciousness for another decade, at least.

Sounds like you really hate his lyrics/image. Yeah, pretty dorky, but he does have some good songs, especially the non-filler on his "The Fragile" album.

Jack Redelfs, Wednesday, 21 February 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He was pretty good at the time of 'Pretty Hate Machine', that record had a certain cold charm that he lost after 'Broken'. I always felt he descended into self-parody after that, you see I suspected that no- one can stay that depressed for so long and not commit suicide or at least become totally inactive. Hence, the sentiments started to ring a bit false as was the music which lost some of the my-soul-is-a- cathedral-of-sorrow stilness in favor of yr boring techno-metal. Also reflected in the live-shows: I saw NIN play a blinding live-show in 1990, really intense and sort of dangerous in a direct physical way. Then around 'Downward Spiral' it was yr typical predictable RAWK SHOW. I sort of like the first single of the last album though, but not enough to actually buy it.

Incesticide. OH THOSE WACKY EARLY NINETIES.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 May 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

the only thing subpar about Reznor is that his lyrics describe feelings directly rather than conveying moods abstractly. otherwise he's a soundscaping god and has great taste. way too critically underrated.

I've never really been all that thrilled with NIN, but Ned 100% OTM upthread. Reznor has impeccable taste in covers.
