They're on now.@

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

...and not looking at all well.î

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

What happened to Simon Gallup? I used to think he was dead cool! Now, well, he's looking pretty damn embarassing.N

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks! This thread caused me to turn on the TV at perfectly as The Cure started to play. Not at all well, but better than one would think. Thank God for low expectations!

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago) link

The song's not much to...er...sing about

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago) link

though it should be noted that NBC doesn't come in all that great on my TV.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago) link

The lyrics to this song are straight out of the Hallmark equivalent of Cure lyrics.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago) link

i.e. wholly simplistic, Cure-by-numbers stuff

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago) link

Simon looks as if he's suffering from acute gas pains. I mean I know the "low slung" bass thing is what the cool bass players are supposed to do, but really.... s

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago) link

sadly still one of the best i've ever seen on Leno.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago) link

Good lord, did Jay just put on a Brit accent and say "thank ya, lads!" Someone please kill him.¿

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago) link

Apparently Patti Smith's on Conan, too.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago) link

Just spotted that too

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 03:38 (twenty years ago) link

The only thing that makes it a Cure song is that they're performing it. Where's all the jangly, affected guitar?

Now, some critiques for Robert himself: don't put on any more lipstick until you spend some time with the Crest White Strips. Also, it's 2004. Get a haircut.

-edit- Jay Leno does that accent thing any time a band from England plays. It's awful.

Alex in NYC why are nearly all your posts trailed by some unpredictable ASCII character.

I know it's cool to be fashionably tardy, Famous Athlete, but if you're going to be this late to a party, there won't be any cake left for you

I thought the song was terribly boring - horrible guitar sound.

Simon can stand however he wants (perhaps his posture is the result of some spinal condition?) seeing as he was the only one playing anything interesting during that song.

It is really time for a makeover for Robert Smith, though. Send in the Queer Eye guys ASAP.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Saturday, 1 May 2004 04:17 (twenty years ago) link

The part where Robert immitates Siouxsie's "ooooeeeoooo" sounds is quite exceptional.

Surely that part is lifted directly from "Tenant"? Spooky!

Muppet Boy, Saturday, 1 May 2004 04:40 (twenty years ago) link

Letterman had The Roots and Kimmel had Flaming Lips. Late Night Network Talk Shows hit the quadfecta tonight.

boldbury (boldbury), Saturday, 1 May 2004 05:28 (twenty years ago) link

"Tenant" was actually my fave song off Siouxsie's "Kaleidoscope". I actually tried to pull it out less than a week ago, along with "Juju" and just decided Siouxsie is best left in my high school memories. Nothing against them, but it just didn't feel right. Some of Juju is just so heavily GOTH, and I can't take that sort of stuff now.

Look people, I just stay clear of the Cure these days. I mean, I might have given "Mint Car" a listen way back when it came out and it turned me off to the point that I don't give a rat's ass what they're doing now. I don't want to KNOW, okay? I just ignore them.

Jay Leno should be bitch slapped. I can't STAND it when Americans ape British accents. In films, I can see through them every time.

bimble (bimble), Saturday, 1 May 2004 06:02 (twenty years ago) link

it was okay. the sound wasn't exceptional. my god robert looked bad though, especially when he smiled there at the end.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 1 May 2004 06:51 (twenty years ago) link

The 'ooooo-ooooo-oooh' part is pretty good. On the whole, the song sounds like a decent b-side though...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Saturday, 1 May 2004 07:40 (twenty years ago) link

Robert is looking more and more like the aging drag-queen I said he would turn out to be 18 years ago. It's time to stop with the hair and smeared lipstick. It's silly. Quit it. ;)

As for the song, I didn't hate it, which for me is saying quite a bit. But it wasn't anything outstanding. Then again, I wasn't expecting to be blown away by it. It would have been nice if they did blow me away, though. Just for old time's sake.

I spent most of my time watching the peformance thinking, "is that... Simon? What the hell is he doing? Cut that out!"

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Saturday, 1 May 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

god, thats fucking pish.

what a bloody letdown...

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Saturday, 1 May 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago) link

Am I the only person that is glad that Fat Bob *hasn't* grown up and conformed and is settling happily into being an aging drag queen? I'd have been disappointed if he'd done anything else!

Super-Kate (kate), Saturday, 1 May 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago) link

Hmm, you have a point, but it doesn't make it any less horrific to look at him. :)

You certainly can't fault someone for being himself, though.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Saturday, 1 May 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

I've decided that the 'ooooeeeooo' sounds more like the bit from "Desert Kisses" now.

Having listened a few more times, I think the song is decent-ish. It's The Cure. They're singing Cure lyrics and making Cure-ish sounds.

It would be welcomed if they took it up a notch though.

Muppet Boy, Saturday, 1 May 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago) link

I tivoed this and my b/f cancelled it to record the nightline roll call of the dead.

I'm with you on this one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 1 May 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

No reactions then from the usual suspects? I'm starting to warm up to this actually, I think the fuzzy nu-punk guitar sound is pretty catchy and should def. sound good on the studio version.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:07 (twenty years ago) link

This usual suspect hasn't heard the darn thing yet, so I need to chase down a file...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:59 (twenty years ago) link

It's still linked on COF, I think.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago) link

HAPPY DOWNLOADING TO MEEEEE

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:13 (twenty years ago) link

"I'm starting to warm up to this actually"

Yeah, it's a bit of a grower. I've gone from 'eh, it's ok.' to 'must listen MORE!'

Which has to be a good sign, really.

Muppet Boy, Monday, 3 May 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago) link

not a great song but still better than the Flaming Lips on Kimmell.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago) link

(PS I like this song; it isn't as immediate as some of their other singles but is very pleasant. I am also boggling because they didn't end mid-progression!)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago) link

I will give it an ear here shortly...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago) link

*does so* Hey, whaddaya know, I think what Dan thinks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago) link

(I enjoy them synth squiggles on the break.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago) link

I like the bass line best.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

It's really hard to say what to think of this song from a live performance, especially if the band hasn't been playing it that long live...it sounded a bit simple, but also sounded like it had some serious potential as a studio version. I found Robert's squeaks near the end a bit strange after the more ...normal main section of the song, but whatever. Agreed that Simon's antics onstage were kind of embarassing, kind of like he was Peter Hook trying to channel Chuck Berry's duckwalk, but maybe that's just because he's 75 years old the weight of the bass is aggravating his bad back or something. Bob doesn't look any more like a drag queen than usual, which is to say, quite a bit, but that's part of the charm.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

I think I'm glad I've only heard the audio. (And it is indeed a good bass line.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

Simon was just looking for his contact lense, clearly. Or possibly a shiny, shiny penny.

Muppet Boy, Monday, 3 May 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

Perhaps I was too hard on ol' Simon (he remains my fave member of the band), but it seems his bass has gotten heavier and heavier over the years (look at him in the clips for "Hanging Garden" and "Play for Today", and he's able to play without any grievous spinal distress) s

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:24 (twenty years ago) link

I just watched a few minutes of this clip. Simon is pretty hunched, huh?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago) link

Hm. It's not like he HASN'T done the hunch before.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:30 (twenty years ago) link

That was my immediate thought, but it certainly seems that the hunch is starting to take over. (Also, the camera is not very kind to the hunch.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago) link

I think "the hunch" should sort've gracefully bow out by this point.....pardon the pun a

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago) link

Surprisingly the single doesn't give much an indication on the direction/sound of the album, although it seems unlikely that we'll get a Bloodflowers pt.2 (which is good..)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago) link

Oooooooo weeeeeeee ooooooooo.
