Only one album and one EP and there's pop perfection, eh? Love With The Proper Stranger kicking off with Diplomat and then on to Beach Party, a great forgotten single with a sort of alienated pathos, guitar crunch, pop jangle, and surprising hooks. Who else has even heard of them?

Hal Hartley, at least. (I knew I'd heard something of theirs somewhere -- some mental searching has revealed it to be the Amateurs soundtrack.)

Quite. This is where I first heard them. Excellent soundtrack. But what do you think?

I have the album and I agree, but I thought there was a second album, unless I'm thinking of the EP. I found it used and am not sure why I bought it, usually I only do that if I've heard a song or two, but I can't imagine hearing them on the radio.

I haven't thought in years.

No, actually, I haven't heard anything apart from that track, and don't remember having a strong opinion either way, so ... this is the part where I bow out of the thread.

They were sort of Bangles-ish, weren't they? I mean, early Bangles, that is. Garagey gals with nice harmonies. Didn't they have a song called "Everyday I Must Eat Pasta"? I prefered the Del Monas, myself. What about Das Furlines? I always thought they were an East Village all girl polka band, but my friend Anton told me they evolved into an all girl Monks cover band. The things I miss out on, sheesh.

I believe Debby Schwartz had a solo album sometime in the last year or two. I also remember hearing that Joan Osborne was covering "Mind Full of Worry" or whatever it's called live, & it was going to be the single from her next album, but then it wasn't recorded... these days, Debby sings with Loser's Lounge a lot.

I saw them live once. They encored with a pretty solid version of Yoko Ono's "Why."

three years pass...
They were a great band, and no they weren't a MONKS cover band though that wouldn't be bad. "Pictures of Italy" is the song with the line "Everyday I eat pasta..." They were better than the Bangles or the Go-Go's, as they were not as over-produced and over-hyped. Sadly they were also over-looked. I was fortunate enough to see them several times and still love them.
