I think that their old stuff with Danzig is criminally underrated in the grand scheme of rock and roll.
A very important band.

I think it's a testament to the longevity of the Misfits that you still see maladjusted teenagers wearing their tshirts in shopping malls and high schools across America.

I was thinking is more of testament to teanagers thinking the shirt looks cool.

I've been listening to the Misfits a lot the past couple weeks, as one does in October. It occurred to me the other day that if someone said that the Misfits had recorded both the greatest pop-punk album ever (Walk Among Us) and the greatest hardcore album ever (Earth A.D.), I would consider that an entirely legitimate opinion.
Earth A.D. is really incredible, too, because on paper it seems like it should be a total flop. They abandoned the melodic sensibility that made so much of their earlier stuff great, in favor of playing catch-up with the high-speed U.S. hardcore bands that followed them. And yet it completely works.

On the other hand, I don't love how many of Danzig's lyrics are about violence against women. Two of my favorite Misfits song, "Hybrid Moments" and "Where Eagles Dare", are marred by these references to rape that serve no apparent purpose (what does "when new creatures rape your face" even mean, anyway?) I realize people may think this is a stupid thing to complain about re: this particular band, but I know it will always bother me.
― JRN, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:01 (eight years ago)
it's valid, I always had issues with "Bullet" and "Last Caress" for taht reason
― Neanderthal, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:03 (eight years ago)
i mean, they wouldn't be the same band if the lyrics weren't outlandishly offensive
― Treeship, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:13 (eight years ago)
not to say they'd be better or worse but it's hard for me to imagine these songs another way. it seems very campy and -- in its excessiveness -- somewhat separate from the discourses that actually normalize violence against women. idk. i probably wouldn't write songs like this personally
― Treeship, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:16 (eight years ago)
it didn't bother me enough to stop listening to them
― Neanderthal, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:17 (eight years ago)
I tells ya, I am sad as hell that I couldn't make Riot Fest this year to see the reunited Misfits, tho tbh I saw mostly the same thing with Doyle sans Only a few years ago and it was so great.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:18 (eight years ago)
my closest childhood friend in his fucked mid-90s sentra drove out to chicago for riot fest with his ex-street punk older brother and wife. i don't think any of them had left toronto in years. misfits were the only reason they went.
