(Ritchie) Blackmore's Night: Classic or Dud

This thread is devoted to Ritchie Blackmore and (wife?) Candice Night's Medieval venture "Blackmore's Night", which has released several albums. Now-moustachio'd Blackmore as minstrel merryman, looking like a cross between Will Scarlet and Zorro, mug of ale in hand, serenading the village folk along with fair wench Night (she performs with ivy leaves entwined around her microphone, fer Chrissake) down moonlit paths of song...

Does the shameless transparency of Blackmore and Night's retro schtick (e.g., mandolin, Renaissance drums, recorders, faux-pub atmosphere) make this one an unfailing, total Classic? Or is it depressing, Spinal Tap-verite makeover from a once respectable metal God, that can only make us run screaming in terror back into the arms of Joe Lynn Turner?

Keep the Deep Purple and Rainbow tangents to a minimum...this is a serious matter here!

I would say "dud," but it's just so fantastically bizarre that I might just have to say "classic". I suppose it's a better thing for him to be doing that endlessly depressing Deep Purple/Rainbow reunion/nostalgia tours.

Hmm .. I wasn't even aware of this. He's had the stache for awhile though, hasn't he? I kinda want to hear this...

Every interview I have ever read with Blackmore even back to the 70s, he discusses liking this kind of music, so he probably has made enough cash and is just getting around to trying this kind of music. The guy co-wrote "Man on the Misty Mountain" with a guy whose stage name is god, so it isn't that big of a leap.

Holy shit! I saw a Blackmore's Night concert on PBS tonight. Granted, there's a bit of a tongue-in-cheek element to it, but still 'twas more than a bit disturbing, seeing Ritchie (and with that damn moustache!) tappin' his leather boots along to the music all minstrel-like. All the people in the front row were dressed in Renaissance garb. Yikes. It's enough to make you scream for Joe Lynn Turner (but not enough for Graham Bonnett).

And yes, the PBS people were interviewing Blackmore and Candice Night in the studio during the intermission (in costume, I think).

awesome, altho mostly for kitsch reasons (otoh, what else would one listen to whilst drinking mead in a meadow, huh?)

On the PBS special, they performed this really hilariously cheezy song. Here's a different live performance of the same song...which unfortunately doesn't quite capture the same magnitude of badness lip-synched as it does when actually played live, the audience stomping about like mirthful hobbitfolk, etc. But, anyway, see and believe!
