Recommend really good songs that are available to download legally

I have an ethical hangup with downloading music. I'll only download songs that are available legally on bands websites, epitonic.com. etc. The problem is, a lot of the songs that are available for legal download really suck, so I'd like somebody to point me to some that are actually good, and provide links.

Bands I really like include Pavement, Deerhoof, The Beatles, Lightning Bolt, The Modern Lovers, My Bloody Valentine, Dntel (OK, thats not a 'band'), Thee More Shallows, and QandnotU.

CAss is too busy spinning her Bananarama and Technotronic cassettes.

uh, Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

not really they suck too. god u ppl have no idea

CAss (CAss), Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, "ethics" nothing. Generally the only person seeing much of the money from cd sales are the record companies. Not that I support "ripping bands off", but I can't mention how many hundreds of cds I bought due to hearing mp3s first.

fuck the RIAA

uh, Sunday, 2 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember the website URL, but every official Brian Jonestown Massacre (and some bootlegs) is available online. Anton may be crazy, but he's generous.

Satisfy the urge for ethical downloading with Matthew Herbert's abstract tecnoAcoustic literalism THE MECHANICS OF DESTRUCTION which sounds not entirely unlike a Lightning Bolt/DNTEL mash-up might possibly almost sound like...

My "CAss" certainly is a charming individual.

attacking other people's taste in music totally unprovoked = classic.

one jon williams is plenty, thanks

serya: http://www.brainwashed.com/vvm has lots of V/Vm downloads available. also, http://electricsound.sevcom.com has a song or two you might like as well

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This is cute.... real cute. It's amazing to me. That someone requires attention in whatever form so bad, that they resort to "provoking" people on boards like this. And to take the time to log in as two seperate names... wow. It's a lot like a prank call, except without the intelligence of a bad pun.

So "uh", when you talk to your therapist this week, remember to tell him about the "friends" you've made on ILM, and how posting made you feel. And "giggling in front of the computer my step-dad gave me so that I'd leave him alone" is not a feeling. If you're not "talking to someone" you might consider giving it a try. You might need to work out some of these unresolved issues you seem to be experiencing.

The cluster has been fucked on this thread.

CAss hates bush apparently

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

this is my final post on this board, but Mike Salmo, do not get angry because you didn't realize I was joking around with the poster, and not insulting him.

"attacking other people's taste in music totally unprovoked = classic.

to the rest of you, much thanks"

Thus, I responded, tongue-in-cheek, with an unprovoked insult of the person's tastes, thinking he would get the joke, and he didn't. he wasn't offended, he just didn't get it.

big deal.

uh, Monday, 3 May 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, back to the question:

John Vanderslice has lots of downloads on his homepage (solo and MK Ultra stuff).

I also make regular visits to Fingertips.com.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

well, since you like them, thee more shallows website has two songs from the new unreleased album available. but I have the whole thing! but I'm not going to make it available to anyone else illegally unless they really really tempt me.

There's a pretty amazing stash of mp3s of Beethoven's Ninth time-stretched-out to 24 hours(!) here:

Go to Slumberland and seek out Black Tambourine's Throw Aggi Off The Bridge and Black Car, then head to Catsup Plate and check out Destroyer's The Temple.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's my conundrum, going back to the original post of this thread. I can download music, or I can buy music. If I buy it (and I do sometimes, even frequently) I invariably buy it used, which means that even though I bought it, the amount of money that goes to the actual artist(s) who produced it is STILL ZERO. Comments?
