The Rat Pack - C/D

I do enjoy much of Sinatra's work, and Martin had his moments. But mainly I'm talking about their iconic status and the social phenomenon they were and what they spawned.

I remember all these writers and Sinatra pals making the talk show rounds after he passed away, talking about why he was so special and what he did and represented, and kept thinking to myself "Now I get it, he was a real dick and wore tuxedos all the time, and was kind enough to share a martini with Chazz Palminteri once, and the roasts! How funny! O to be like him."

I have a copy of Only the Lonely I won't ever sell, but a dud upon them out of the recording studio!

They were not good actors.

I give my endorsement to Sinatra but admittedly I don't know enough about the Rat Pack as a whole to comment.

I liked them in the Breakfast Club, but I never saw St. Elmo's Fire or any of the other movies.

Rat Pack, not Brat pack (tho I assume you all knew that and were just being funny)

uh, Monday, 3 May 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Did any of the Brat Pack sing?

I think Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald had a jazz combo.

That scene where Sammy Davis tearfully recalls bringing the flare gun to school never fails to get me.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 3 May 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, I agree.

LIkewise, I think Emilio Estevez's rendition of "Guys and Dolls" was terrific.

Dino and Sammy are excellent as drunk priests driving a Ferrari in Cannonball Run.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean Martin was amazing in Shogun Warrior

Sammy Davis had a brief but brilliantly campy TV chat show in the mid 70s, Sammy and Company. Surely the pack members turned up as guests, but I really can't remember. It was parodied, hilariously, a few years later on SCTV as The Sammy Maudlin Show.
Some Came Running is fantastic. Frank is a criminally underrated actor IMHO.

man with the golden arm!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe "criminally" wasn't the best choice of words. Sorry, Frank. See also Suddenly, The Manchurian Candidate, The Detective and of course From Here to Eternity. Dino was pretty great in Some Came Running, playing himself I guess.

That gag where Sammy Davis Jr is just standing on stage, reading a newspaper, and then these two Klansmen dressed in full regalia wander on and stare at him for a few seconds, so he calmly puts his paper away, and says to them "Now, you may be wondering why I asked you here" = classic.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

True fact= they were originally called The Clan, until someone pointed out to Frank Sinatra that a group contaning two Jews and a black guy calling itself The Clan might not be the most sensible move.

This is the captain of your ship!!! WOO WOO!!!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, and the record execs told them that "Zionist Chocolate" wasn't couth either, so they had to go to their third choice.
