quite a big back catalogue now, but the 4cd anniversary was, surprisingly, and quite overwhelmingly rather boring. but i know theres been some very good records on Darla. what are they?

search: Heartworms - 'space escapade' for their cover of Radiohead's Creep and 'enemies'
Holiday Flyer - 'blue harvest'
Califoria Oranges

I like their Little Darla Has a Treat For You series. I never really liked the Sisterhood of Convoluted Thinkers album I got, but I wouldn't really say it's bad enough to be destroyed, coz it's creative, but just not very entertaining.

james, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have much, but I will say that Windy & Carl's "Bliss Out" record Antartica is SO good. Maybe the best thing they've done.

Mark, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a great Darla story about the main guy, whoever he is, desperately trying to get Sonic Youth to contribute to the Bliss Out series. SY turned him down, so Darla-guy vented his spleen on a private mailing list with various music types on it. Unbeknownst to Mr. Darla, a certain T. Moore also was on the list, who responded with a note calling Mr. Darla among other things a sad goth. Entertainment!

I agree that Windy and Carl disc is a treat and a half, but they themselves told me they never want to deal with Mr. Darla again.

Search: hollAnd (ADD-afflicted synth-pop w/ experimental leanings and association w/ Mark Borthwick - get it all, even the long-winded Borthwick stuff!), My Morning Jacket (hazy, lazy country music w/ LOTS of reverb). Probably tons of other stuff. The Piano Magic Bliss Out contribution is very nice. But that 4 CD compilation is VERY boring. Oooo, more wimpy electronic noodling, yum. Mel probably knows where the wheat lies.

I have heard way too many stories about folks having run-ins with Mr. Darla, including one conflict aired out on a public list between him and another notable "indie pop" label. Never mind the number of folks a while back bitching about the lack of mailorder expedience.

Mr. Darla also famously dissed the indie-pop list around this time, talking tons of shit and throwing insults left, right, and through the fourth dimension. That's a great way to increase sales, you know, insulting THE demographic that brings in the bucks.

David Raposa, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot Lali Puna's Tridecoder. Joint release with Hausmusik and morr music. It's cool!

It's Darla/Pop Secret really.

>Mr. Darla also famously dissed the indie-pop list around this time, talking tons of shit and throwing insults left, right, and through the fourth dimension.

And assured everyone that he wouldn't be reading the list anymore, which is a laugh as anyone who cracks Darla on the indiepop list *will* be confronted/rebutted, on-list, within twenty-four hours.

That said, it's a decent label, and would be better if someone would stop encouraging My Morning Jacket to clutter up the _Little Darla_ series with bad cover versions.

Jeff Wright, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cat's Miaow is fragile and femme, looking for old volumes of the Little Darla Has A Treat series is like hunting for old back issues of X-men Comics at a used book store -- exceptionally difficult and highly rewarding (I just found No. 2 back in Boston...).

JM, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was just very disappointed with that 4cd thing. but looking through the back catalogue, i am quite surprised that there isn't really very much worth having. The Piano Magic bliss-out is superb, enough to validate the label by itself. Flowcharts blissout is pretty good, but not their best thing.

the little darla series can be ok, especially at the very reasonable price. the one with the tequila worm type cover (vol14?), incidentally a brilliant sleeve, has a nice track by Junior Varsity KM.

I know a good chunk of the Michigan Space Rock people, and everybody I know who has dealt with Darla has had nothing but problems. Windy and Carl, Ryan from Fuxa, and the guys from Tomorrowland have all been shafted by Mr. Darla.

Tomorrowland probably got it the worst. They were supposed to be paid for a 12" that was being pressed in a run of 500, they were accidentally told that the pressing run was actually 1000. Beyond that, Darla is holding their royalties until they do another records for them(which will never happen).

It is one of those organizations that makes you realize just how dirty the music business actually can be.

Just bought Treat For You vol 17...the first three songs are great!

james, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they have put out a ton of good stuff but they do have a bad reputation as far as business goes. It's probably partly because they are one of the bigger indiepop labels, they are actually making money, and that goes against the grain of the indie world to some degree. Also maybe they aren't especially good at relationships, i dunno, never dealt with them in that way. I can say their mail order has improved, but tweekitten is still pretty much the best there is...

g, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, here's the good stuff to be specific: my morning jacket, lali puna, alsace lorraine, holiday flyer, color filter, sone, steward, tullycraft, etc. all have had good releases on darla. also the bliss out series is mostly decent. They have also played a large part in making international pop from labels like Siesta, elefant, morr music, and others available in the US, so they do deserve credit for that.

g, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
I'm listening to lots of Darla lately:
Saloon
Holiday Flyer
Auburn Lull
Aarktica
Mahogany
as well as No.s 17 and 18 of the Little Darla series. I'm really happy with it all so far. Apparently there are Maho9gany and Auiburn Lull single comps. out in the spring, but no word yet on that new Mahogany album.

The Alsace Lorraine album isn't that good, sadly. I was hoping for so much more, but it's pretty dull.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago)

saloon has split, very sad. even if the second album was only mediocre. but the projects are like an improved saloon so no tears then.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago)

I did read that, and it is very sad. I like the second album as much, if not more than the first.

are there lots of singles & oddities out there to collect?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:48 (twenty years ago)

of saloon? they had three (?) great 45s and three or four not-so-awesome split singles.. plus some early demo stuff i've never been able to track down.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 23 December 2004 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I'll hope for a post-mortem collection, then.

Just listening to the Coldharbourstores album, and it's a lot nicer than I'd expected, for some reason. It was only $4 too!

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:28 (twenty years ago)

Their webpage is pretty funny. They sure have a lot of "exclusive" stuff you possibly can't buy any other place.

d'oh broken link

it's Those Bastard Souls 20th Century Chemical

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

also the version of "Spaced Out" on one of the Little Darlas is way better than the one that made it onto the last Grifters record

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

What they list as "exclusive" means they are the only distributors for those labels in the United States. If you've bought LTM CDs from anywhere other then LTM themselves or a european store/mailorder, you're buying it from Darla. Stores, and other distributors, get their LTM cds from Darla. Etc.

The Train from Terminal Boredom...

DMR, the only TBS version of 'Spaced out' I have heard was off TBS's second, more 'commercial' do. I was disappointed with it- being one of my fave Grifters tracks - i was hoping they might have done something with it. To me it was just stripped down and drumless and that was it.
Please enlighten?

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think it is the one on this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/683606

Various - Little Darla Has A Treat For You (Vol. 6)

Notes: At the time of release, tracks 2, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 15 were exclusive tracks.

track 2 is listed as "?" by Those Bastard Souls. it's more demo-y than the version on Debt and Departure and has a more spacey David Bowie type feel ... if I remember it right ....

Spaced Out is also on the Darla 100 4 disc thing but I can't remember if it's that version

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

i used to like Bright "Blue Christian"

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

four years pass...

A decade on and it seems not much changes -- over at Mahogany's Facebook page:

"Darla Records" removed our 'coming soon' image for 'Electric Prisms' from their Facebook page, refuse to speak to us, refuse to pay us our royalties or the advance due via the contract, and refuse to listen to, or watch, or even acknowledge any of 'Electric Prisms.' Yet they continue to insist they have not breached contract and that Mahogany is a "Darla" artist. They continue to rob profits from Mahogany and they have meta-tagged eighty items on their website with our band's name - but they refuse contact and refuse payment for our art. Scandalous, illegal, and un-American. This frustration of purpose is willfully obstructionist and will be met with a like response. We entreat all legitimate record labels to contact us so that we may get this record to the people who matter: the listeners. ♥ Thank you! Andrew and Jackie ♥

the mahogany album towers over the rest of the darla catalogue

and fuck darla

midiverb II program 49 (electricsound), Saturday, 4 December 2010 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

this is very annoying, as I order tons of stuff from their mailorder, because they have tons of labels I like all in one place. it basically means if I wanna avoid them, I have to pay an arm and a leg to order stuff direct from LTM. ugh.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

That whole comments thread has become indie/electronic/gaze ground zero. James from Darla posted -- rather snippishly -- and prompted this response from Ulrich Schnauss:

@king james: LOL - how's life on the hill? still in denial and shockingly out of touch with reality as it seems... thumbs up to andrew for making this public - probably should've been done a long time ago... hope this will encourage people to avoid shifting more $$$ into the pockets of darla and eventually cause them to go under - if we're lucky the vacant space might then even get taken up by some genuine folks who are capable of selling music without breaching the most basic standards of business...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 December 2010 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

I listened to Windy and Carl "Antarctica" a few weeks ago and it really knocked me out!
Been years since I'd heard that one.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 5 December 2010 03:10 (fourteen years ago)

Scandalous, illegal, and un-American.

Tbh, even though Mahogany is in the right here, this line makes them sound like whiny teabaggers.

I'd like to hear both sides of this, but it's not looking good for the folks at Darla.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 5 December 2010 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Our own Dan Selzer has rightly noted about keeping an open mind where/when possible -- and hey, he runs a label, so he knows what it can involve! But like this thread (and that series of linked comments) and more shows, there's a bad rep that's been there for a long time.

I've ordered things from Darla in the past and never had any problem with them at all -- quick delivery, perfect shape, etc. There are still too many questions at this point, though, with so many artists now venting.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 December 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, their mail order service has been top-notch for years.
