Great Loretta Lynn review at mighty stylus

http://www.stylusmagazine.com/review.php?ID=1952

toney (worrysome-man), Monday, 3 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sums what up? and what does "hype-driven luminosity" mean?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do people want me to listen to Loretta Lynn? What year is this? Is this all about the war on terrah?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do people want me to listen to Loretta Lynn? What year is this? Is this all about the war on terrah?

Answer: Jack White is to Loretta Lynn what "archduke" was to Franz Ferdinand a month and a half ago to the national corps of pop music hacks.

George Smith, Monday, 3 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

is first time poster toney a stylus writer?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think so, Kilian.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to state for the record before the hype gets out of hand that I've been down with Loretta since day one. Johnny Cash too. Was on that train when Rick Rubin was still trying to figure out how to program an 808. Merle Haggard, Willie, Buck. All the "cool" country people.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to state for the record before the hype gets out of hand that I've been down with ... all the "cool" country people.

Why? Are you expecting an indictment or to soon become the target of a criminal investigation?

George Smith, Monday, 3 May 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

George, I think you set your browser to not display the oh-so-important "irony" tags that bracketed Mark's post.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah-hah! I think you're right.

George Smith, Monday, 3 May 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, your honour, my client simply cannot be guilty of these charges of asshattery and bandwagonism, because, as you have plainly seen, he posted on the internet that he's "been down with Loretta since day one."

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a pretty good review, but it doesn't stop me from wanting jack white to go the fuck away forever.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean his take on trad-"americana" lore is so hackneyed and embarrassing, and frankly, loretta's songs were pretty implicitly rock before white came along and belabored the obvious and poured his own obvious on top of it.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

why do people like him? do they just not know better?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a poor upbringing

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

They love Jack White = they've never heard George Thoroughgood.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahahaha!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Thoroughgood

I like that mispelling! cuz he's thorough and good!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, frankly, I think it's more likely (in every sense except sales/publicity) that it's Loretta helping JW out here. She doesn't need any credibility, she still sells out concerts to audiences who couldn't give a shit about JW. I mean, her legacy is rightly assured.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I said something similar to this many years ago.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

They love Jack White = they've never heard George Thoroughgood.

*counting down the seconds until Nate appears to complain* ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

why do people like him? do they just not know better?

DO people like him? i just thought they kind of tolerated him while they were busy staring at meg's big ... oh, nevermind.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

drumkit?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway i think releases like this (and the cash/rubin stuff) are pretty cynical -- they basically say "there's no way you could ever get into music like this without someone like [big rock name] attached and the songs tarted up with loud guitars so it sounds 'vintage' but not in that icky off-putting way that real old records sound 'vintage'."

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

but why should loretta lynn be making a real old vintage-sounding record in 2004? she wasn't even trying to do that in 1974. and why in the world wouldn't she want to make something that sounds current?

i haven't heard the jack and loretta album so i have no idea if it's any good or not, but i don't see what's cynical about the rick and johnny albums. they're better than the albums johnny had been making for the decade before 'em. and the first one wasn't tarted up with anything; it was a rather spare, acoustic record. and it was a damn good late-in-life album.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not real old vintage sounding, it's WhiteStripes/Led Zepplin sounding.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Blues Hammer"?

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and despite all my belly-aching, VLR is still a pretty good album.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

but why should loretta lynn be making a real old vintage-sounding record in 2004?

never said she should. if anything it's white who's stuck in the past.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

water from the wells of home (1988) is pretty good....prob. better than the last two american ones...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)

i think he IS stuck in the past in a lot of ways, and while i find it incredibly annoying to hear him talk about it all the time, it doesn't bother me musically. he likes what he likes, and he knows what he likes, and i think that's good. a lot of good musicians are stuck in some other time. and i take it for granted that he's a huge loretta lynn fan, and i therefore don't see what's cynical about him wanting to work with her.

i also take it for granted that she's probably really excited that someone young and famous, who the rock and roll kids like, is seriously interested in working with her (instead of just playing her old records and putting her plaque on museum walls), and she may very well have heard something she actually likes in his music. i'm not sure who the cynical parties are.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

When Chubby Checker got that call from The Fat Boys he was probably pretty excited.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

water from the wells of home (1988) is pretty good....prob. better than the last two american ones...

that was the one with the not-very-good paul mccartney collaboration, right? and a not-very-good collaboration with his son. but a decent duet with his daughter, if i'm not mistaken. i'll take the cash/rubin collaborations any day of the week.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Loretta's new album fine, including Jack's guitar parts. Last Loretta album I liked was maybe 30 years ago (okay -- 28: When the Tingle Becomes a Chill, 1976), though maybe that's just 'cause I wasn't paying attention. I don't care how retro it supposedly is (what? 'cause there's like a bluegrass song and a rockabilly song and so on?); the thing rocks. And yeah, of course, she's rocked before, but maybe not this consistently, and not for a really long time, and not with these kinda guitar solos. Thought the Rubin/Johnny things were pretty much a bore, but then, I was never much of a fan of JC in the first place (his voice is so fucking leaden, why does nobody ever admit that?), so what do I know. (Merle Haggard's album in 2003 was better than any Johnny Cash album I've ever heard.) Anyway, I'll take Loretta + Jack over Tammy + KLF, I think. As for Jack, yeah, I hate him too. Except when I don't. Here are some reasons why, and why not:

chuck, Monday, 3 May 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

As for it sounding current-or-not, I dunno, this is, like, the best year for country rock in recent human history (Big & Rich, Warren Brothers, Montgomery Gentry, Kenny Chesney, Gretchen Wilson, Julie Roberts, etc.), and Loretta's album fits right in! I *hope* it gets onto country stations. It's not retro in an alt-country way because it has energy and rhythm, and (99.9 percent of) alt-country doesn't. (And that long beautiful spacey part at the beginning of "Portland, Oregon" is "retro" to what, exactly -- *Music for Airports*???)

chuck, Monday, 3 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Barbara Mandrell needs the Jack White treatment-first up, obv-remix of "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 3 May 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two fuckin' rule. I love his leaden voice. I'll admit it.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

interview w/ Loretta Lynn on CMT this weekend: "I didn't think it was gonna be this much of a country record!" Country legend in being in charge of own career non-scandal.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like this is coming from someone who's read more about Cash's American recordings than has actually heard them.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack is way more Gordon Gano than George Thorogood.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

jack is way more gordon gecko than george thorogood

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

he's more dexter romweber than either

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sara romweber was the original meg white

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

jack is to dexter romweber as kurdt is to scratch acid. sort of.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And you know, kind of unrelated but still, a quick notice to whichever record company exec. decided to release a bunch of fake versions of Portland Oregon that play for a few seconds and degrade into static:

You can go fuck yourself. If you don't want me to hear the fucking song, than fine, I'm not buying your album.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that'll show 'em!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Originally they asked Merzbow to "revive" Lynn's career.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Im fighting for America.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank god I'm not the only one who takes a dim view of the Cash records w/ Rick Rubin. And yeah, I've listened to them. It's reductive and insulting the way Johnny has been cast as a doom n gloom merchant, like he's Nick Cave of country. Christ. He has so much more to offer, like a sense of humor for starters. Johnny Cash, I mean, not Jesus. This depressing precedent certainly makes me wary of the new Loretta Lynn, though I like her enough to sample some tracks eventually.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's reductive and insulting the way Johnny has been cast as a doom n gloom merchant

it's not like he didn't have a part in it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

there's an interview with her RIGHT NOW on "All Things Considered"

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody put the gun in his hand and said cover Danzig

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i'm a naysayer by and large on the rubin-cash stuff also, someone needed to tell rick 'bring that beat back', and am skeptical about this also, nothing sucks the air outta the room like reverance (cf. the cinderella theory)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And more importantly, the doom and gloom merchant thing is awesome.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

on some of that stuff it really sounds like they were propping him up instead of letting him take a nap.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh like anyone could forget the actor who took parker lewis from the page and made him a living, breathing, swatch synchronising persona

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

coolness.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ego Trip's Book Of Hip-Hop Lists claims that Corin revealed some MAD mic skillz at a party back in the day. His undie comeback is nigh!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

bloggers set your watches.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

swatches, sorry.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

plays part of "Portland, Oregon"

Interviewer: "What you do think of your two voices together?"

LL: "I think it's great. I didn't know he was gonna do that [overdub his voice] [says she didn't recognize it as his voice at first]"

Interviewer: "where is the country here?"

"It's still country: it's in the words, in the way we sing them."

talks about "Little Red Shoes" song, story behind it.

talks about title song, about her mother.

...hmm, yeah just your basic promo interview. They barely touched on White's involvement at all.

The songs sounded great. I'm definitely gonna pick this one up. But then I'm just a big White Stripes fan.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Johnny Cash did doom n gloom better than anybody but he also did rockabilly, Americana, heart songs, gospel, corny novelties, and of course all kinds of crap, too. Personally, I prefer "A Boy Named Sue" over the Soundgarden and NIN covers.

lovebug starski, Monday, 3 May 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I like both, I can't help it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was about to say -- there's room enough to enjoy everything, breadth and depth both.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no you two blamed fools,
one must PICK A SIDE RIGHT NOW
and SCREAM FOR YOUR SIDE

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

A WINNER IS ME ME ME ME

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of the later stuff is alright, I just depressed when I realize that Johnny Cash recorded a REDUNDANT Depeche Mode cover.

Though this shouldn't bother Ned.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh heavens no!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi. I'm not needed here, really.
