Read in the Times this morning that the line-up was announced already:

SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL Coney Island, July 17. One of the most welcome new summer additions, the Siren Festival is a day of sun and sea mist along the streets and boardwalk of Coney Island with the joyous cacophony of indie rock from noonish till sundown, courtesy of the good people at The Village Voice. This year the bands include Death Cab for Cutie, TV on the Radio, Blonde Redhead, Har Mar Superstar, the Constantines, Fiery Furnaces, the Fever and Your Enemies Friends. www.villagevoice.com/siren

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

So much for having a "Predict Siren's Line-up" thread.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Siren Fest has consistantly sucked since it's inception.

I look at it as a good day to get a drinking ticket on the boardwalk whilst dodging ex-girlfriends and a mean sunburn.

ddb, Monday, 3 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

if the ffs are planning on doing their "fall" schtick, this is so not the right venue for it.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

im very excited for the constantines! the remaining lineup is ho-hum.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

siren booking competes with a shitload of lucrative european summer festivals/tours, which probably makes things difficult. the past two years i've abandoned the stage area for margaritas in plastic cups in the cool, dim interior of puzzles bar and grill.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Puzzles has a karaoke night.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oneida was awesome last year. Their records have never clicked w/ me, but they pushed all the right buttons underneath the hot Coney Island sun.

They gave me HOT DOG FEVER.

bangor, Monday, 3 May 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, Pitchfork drops my name in this Siren thing below, but have you ever seen the kids who go to that concert (AND read Pitchfork)?? Getting punched by them wouldn't hurt at all! (Even despite my ulcer!)

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/04-05/04.shtml#story2

chuck, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

played host to hot-shit bands like Modest Mouse, Hot Hot Heat, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, !!!, Sleater-Kinney, The Shins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, Liars, Superchunk, and Guided by Voices

How times change. (Considering who appears at the end of the list rather than the start.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn it. I really didn't want to go to this because I hated going to the first one so much, but they had to go and book the Fiery Furnaces to drag me in. I definitely have no plans to see the other bands, so I guess it won't be so bad.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

how could it be bad? IT'S AT CONEY ISLAND.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I don't give a shit about any of these bands but I'd go to Coney Island any day of the week.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I GOT CALLED A FAGGOT BY A GUY OPERATING A BOOTH AT CONEY ISLAND LAST YEAR OMG HATE CRIMEZ

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was ignoring the dude yelling at me to play some game and he refered to my roommate as my "lover". Ha ha ha.

GET TO THA' (PRICE) CHOPPA!!!!!!!! ROFFLE!!!!!!!! (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I really hate large crowds in the summer sun. That's never fun to me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Cyclone > Wonder Wheel > shoot the freak > bump your ass off > skee ball > the boardwalk > drinking a $3 Bud at Ruby's and looking at the old pictures > the old timey carousel > the beach > the skull keyring I won from playing skee ball > the go-kart tracks > the batting cages > Chuck Eddy > having a carny call you a faggot > large crowds in the summer sun > the crazy lady with the stomach tattoo dancing in front of the jukebox at Ruby's while her grandkids sit around looking bored > Frank Zappa > donkey balls > Eric Clapton > Ringo > any of the bands playing Siren Fest '04 > punching Chuck Eddy

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

SOLD!

Does Chuck Eddy punch back?

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck was in the Army or something so he probably knows how to KILL A MAN WITH HIS BARE HANDS.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil u r soooo right on omg. but if u don't win me giant neon stuffed alien this year then r friendship is over.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit, gotta work on the skee ball then.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I don't give a shit about any of these bands but I'd go to Coney Island any day of the week.

what's stopping you? (besides your new job)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

we should get an ILM skee ball tournament going!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck siren fest, but skee ball rules.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i rule at skeeball!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

my day job is what's stopping me, yeah.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Fancy a Cyclone ride?

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I saved a bundle on dental surgery by using a few rides on the Cyclone to shake my wisdom teeth out. God bless it.

rasheed wallace, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude the show at Irving Plaza FUCKING RULED.

http://www.ctfoodprotect.org/index_files/chillout.gif

ddb, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT MAYBE I SHOULD SING THEIR PRAISES LIKE ASHLEY AND MARY-KATE THEN.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Puttin' on the Ritz (er..) will "play" in front of the Cyclone at 6 PM and in the Atlantic Ocean at 8 PM.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there, but only for the Fiery Furnaces set.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

SFS would KILL anyone even said the word blog.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa...grammar trouble thurrr.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not clear on how this is relevant, but I saw Pearl Jam in 1996, and then again in the summer of 1998. The latter was a festival show.

Please note that I am in no way putting down the acts that Hstencil mentioned. It's the newer Subpop acts that I'm not crazy about.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I guarantee you that a hypothetical Codeine reunion, Radio Birdman reunion, godheadSilo reunion, Six Finger Satellite reunion, Earth and Steven Jesse Bernstein resurrection would all draw quite well.

They've got fireworks every Friday night at Coney Island, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

But do they fireworks every Saturday night?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The pearl jam thing was becuase you were putting down the label and several acts that inspired that flaming piece of shit band pearl jam.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - as to Saturday fireworks, now that I just don't know. I don't think so, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Death Cab For Cutie, The Thermals, and Vue inspired Pearl Jam? That's some revisionist history, pal!

I have no problem with the acts Hstencil had on his bill, I was only remarking on their uncommercial nature.

I like the Michael Yonkers Band!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Perpetua you fucking dink. Did you eat paint for breakfast?

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It's also really weird to insist that people like the acts that inspired (or appear to have inspired) artists that they do enjoy. I guess it makes sense that someone defending Subpop would feel that way, but it seems to ignore a wide range of factors, including differences in style, writing, individual charisma, etc. Aside from scene/label lineage and geography, there isn't much in common between Earth and Pearl Jam, you know? Pearl Jam's just a mainstream rock band. Most of their appeal (or lack thereof) has more to do with them writing pop songs that get played on the radio than record labels and who they are pals with.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb, do you want me to apologize for a) at one time having been 16 years old b) taking the Subpop name in vain c) confusing you?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think any of those bands I listed, save Mudhoney, particularly exemplify the Sub-Pop sound (that, in turn, certainly had a bit to do with Pearl Jam). They are just the Sub-Pop bands I happen to like.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's kinda gross that Pearl Jam ever came up in this thread. It's so "how can we take someone seriously if they liked popular rock music as a teenager?" How much 'indie-cred' have I lost, ddb?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

DUDE.

1. Pearl Jam blows.

2. I am not defending sub pop. I am defending a list of amazing bands. That you decided to belittle because you either know nothing about them or you're an idiot.

3. Pearl Jam are/were a grunge-lite band. Earth inspired Peral Jam by proxy, i.e. Sub Pop>>>>Earth>>>>Nirvana>>>>Pearl Jam.

4. I am not insisting on you liking anything. It's clear you have awful taste and nothing will ever change that.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Cat Butt >>>>> Blood Circus >>>>> Eddie Vedder's appearance on Mike Watt's "Ballhog or Tugboat" >>>>> Lubricated Goat >>>>> What?

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, my taste sucks, Mr. Constantines fan!

I wasn't dissing the bands Hstencil mentioned! For real! If you're talking about the Subpop bands on the Siren bill, then okay, sure. Whatever, emo boy.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty's the Constantines fan.

And I didn't take much offense to it, but this:

I wonder how many people would show-up for hstencil's hypothetical bill. Enough to fill a modest suburban backyard, maybe? Or am I underestimating the draw of the Michael Yonkers Band?

is sorta condescending.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I like the constantines. Cutty does too, I think. and yes we are both VERY EMO.

also that backyard thing was condescending...not to mention stupid.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I'm not sure if you're ever really paid much attention to Pearl Jam, but the bulk of their influences are just typical classic rock canon stuff. I'm not even really trying to defend Pearl Jam here, I'm just being factual.

I will cop to being condescending re: the hstencil bill. But lovingly so.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

please don't ever be lovingly around me, thanks.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"please don't ever be lovingly around me"

this would make a good merle haggard song title

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

if he wants it, copyright to the title's available from me for, say, $10.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 July 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be there.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too.

Otis Wheeler (Otis Wheeler), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

wahnhh!

Thea (Thea), Friday, 16 July 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i can't go. well, i can, but by the time i get there the only bands left to see will be death cab and trail of dead. how long are all you indie fuxxors planning on sticking around?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 July 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how many people would show-up for hstencil's hypothetical bill. Enough to fill a modest suburban backyard, maybe? Or am I underestimating the draw of the Michael Yonkers Band?

matt, my parents live in NJ, have a good sized backyard with a swimming pool. the train station is super close. there's a mall, starbucks, 7-11 and dunkin donuts in walking distance. we could play the pearl jam cd i shoplifted when i was 15 on the boombox between bands. ill make my dad bring home lots of pizza from our store.

oh, we should make this happen! it would be the poor man's siren fest.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 17 July 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M ALREADY THERE!

I'm kind of early.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 July 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the tall guy in blue'n'white shirt, grey pants, thinning short hair, glasses, backpack and beaming at the novelty of it all (wtf you hard-ass cynics this line-up totally kicks ass at least if you're from central PA).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 17 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i was hoping for more from electric 6. maybe it was better closer to the stage, but where i was no one was getting down.

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 18 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad: Long subway ride across from inattentive mother, ADHD whelp

Bad: Hard to buy beer.

Bad: Har Mar seemed to have lost his voice.

Good: Mission of Burma

Good: Drunken Trail of Dead show

Did anyone else go to the afterparty thing at Lit?

subgenius (subgenius), Sunday, 18 July 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The Fiery Furnaces set was alright, but very messy. They all kinds of technical problems, and it seemed as though they were just trying to get through the set at some points. The last two times I've seen them were better, but this was still pretty fun. I imagine that their set must have been totally incomprehensible and mystifying to the uninitiated, especially during stuff like "Chris Michaels."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 18 July 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

For FF nerds:

My Dog Was Lost But Now He's Found / brief improv / I Broke My Mind / Spaniolated / Single Again / South Is Only A Home / Quay Cur (one verse) / Bow Wow / I'm Gonna Run / Leaky Tunnel / Blueberry Boat / Asthma Attack / Crystal Clear / Tropical Ice-Land / Chief Inspector Blancheflower (sections two and three) / Quay Cur (another verse) / Don't Dance Her Down / Inca Rag/Name Game / Chris Michaels / Leaky Tunnel (reprise) / Quay Cur (final verse)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 18 July 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really glad I caught Your Enemies Friends.

I really wish I'd worn sunscreen.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 18 July 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i wore sunscreen. i had a hot dog. watched the constantines and some other bands. went home and fell asleep at 9PM. woke up today at 3PM.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 19 July 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

TV On The Radio and Electric Six sucked, yes. Especially E6 -- I was near subgenius, where no one was grooving at all. A few bald dudes in baseball caps sang "Gay Bar" to their dates.

Trail of Dead -- where any of you all the way up front, where shit got really messy, esp. when Conrad went out into the photog. pit? Awesome.

ronaldo, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

by that point I was smoking a j on the beach, holmes.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Tv on the radio were actually (despite awful sound) better than I've ever seen them. I'm not really a fan, my best friend from high school is in the band, and im just glad they are doing well.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

he went to my high school jagoff

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

not before getting kicked out of mine...douche.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

did you mean touche'?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

nope.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the sound was a LOT better in the press area up front, so while I loved the Electric Six, I can see why anybody standing around elsewhere would be bored (I caught Trail Of Dead out in the audience area and it was quieter than my stereo).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only person who not only caught as many bands as I could but wish I could go back and catch all the stuff I missed? I'm kinda surprised everybody's all nonchalant about catching one group, getting there late and leaving early. Thought there'd be some other big dorks around.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb - you were there and we did not sup of $3 Buds at Ruby's??!?!? For shame!

Am I the only person who not only caught as many bands as I could but wish I could go back and catch all the stuff I missed? I'm kinda surprised everybody's all nonchalant about catching one group, getting there late and leaving early. Thought there'd be some other big dorks around.

You're the only one. I only caught Burma, and the sound was so crap I stopped paying attention halfway through (then ran into bnw and Mary so talked to them for a bit).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Trail of Dead -- where any of you all the way up front, where shit got really messy, esp. when Conrad went out into the photog. pit? Awesome.

i was far away but i'm tall so i did see when one band member who sings (dunno their names) disappeared backstage briefly and reappeared with a case of water bottles which he heaved into the audience.

the real action where i was was the fight circle in which drunk aggro-hipsters wrestled each other on the asphalt, which was all fun and games until someone got hurt. at which point it was just fun.

common_person (common_person), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the bands actually sounded better from the cages than in front of the stage. has it ever sounded so bad? i can't remember. spent most of my time on the beach where at least they bring beers to you.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

on the beach you could watch Puttin' on the Ritz, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I hated Eletric Six so much because I could only hear that bass from thirty rows back ... ?

Did anyone see Death Cab

roberton, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

no but I saw their fans.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)
