z-ro - king of the ghetto

the life of joseph w. mcvey was easily the boringest thing to come out of the south all year (and not in the dead serious, thug life boring way that he sounded before [this is the dude i'm always reminded of when flip's acting serious and talking about guns])(despite the boringness, it was probably his biggest record yet and would have been a lot bigger if he hadn't gotten sent away on a probation violation [FREE Z-RO]), all those tinny, blew-out beats and those distended self-sung hooks, nine-on-bible-page/pinstripe suit cover art. but it works on a single track. that lazy, predictable flow ("once upon a time, not long ago / there was a hustlin motherfucker with a cold-ass flow / everytime he hit the studio, his beeper go off / he'd have to leave and get his g's by selling keys of that raw") and the struggle to hit the bottom of the hook sound very serious and real.

I think Joseph W. McVey a lot! I like his new one a lot too, (and the opening track over the Paid in Full beat is ridiculoid) but I don't think its quite as good as his last one. He has sort of a non-distinct rap style, middle of the road baritone with no particular quirks with only the southern slur and houston slang/references to even hint at who he is; it's all about lyrics and using that solid baritone to anchor his dead seriousness. I think the Flip and Z-Ro album was v. good because they balance each other so well (Flip's playfulness and Z-Ro's matter-of-fact hardness)

'i hate u bitch' is nice. knowing little i wasn't expecting the minor touch of humor that i guess i think comes from him singing the line that way. (his singing's alright too!)

themes: substance abuse, not being able to trust family members, inability to have normal relationships, being fated for some kind of vague fucked up disaster, impending violence (against him).

not sure if there's a general z-ro thread. i heard the life of joseph w. mcvey at a crucial time and i was really serious about houston rap but i was pretty clueless about fucked up blue collar houston rap, like street military or ganxsta nip, and i knew way too much about, like, lil keke. z-ro still raps in that kb/lil flea mode, to me. so, i dig hearing him rapping at a time that he was at the source of that, when that new style (screwed up click style [like pat, keke, whoever], i guess) was just getting off the ground and the main thing was still THIS. but, whatever, still fucking dope to hear.

"first tape i jumped was a al g screw tape, g love." (freestyle there is very much like to me this identifiable formal houston style to me -- technical elements = rhyming plex, 84s, brick... ralph lauren on my body, triangle on my jeannnnn).

cause i saw you mentionin it

i always sort of think of z-ro as being part of a sort of tradition that includes stuff like ganxsta nip and street military. same sort of fatalism and anguish as z-ro but he did it a little more straightforward and dispensed with a lot of the psychotic imagery, horror movie shit, gangsta setpieces. but i dunno, it's more than a little straightforward and does more than dispense with those things... i dunno i'm too high to get into this right now

man that fucking line about

they tell me all the liquor aint good for me
but it drowns out the vision of my casket

lately i been thinkin about rhonda and i miss her
but i don't miss my could-be wife, i miss my sister
i saw you on the news and i'm sorry for your loss
another babydaddy dead and one more kid around the house
i made "i hate you, bitch" about you and you know that
but check this out, sometimes i be wishin i could go back
and undo it, never go through it
try to keep on livin our lives
all i can say today is: i apologize
even though you did me bad, i ain't mad cause we both did dirt
but you didn't have to steal from me and make it hurt
told the laws that i hit you, tried to send me to jail
then called my phone screamin you loved me, and i loved you as well
but after that wasn't nothin left except to let my wheels spin
now everytime i meet a good woman i'm afraid to let her in
cause i don't wanna repeat 2003
i know you mad but if you and the kids ever need anything, holla at me
