people who ONLY use pitchfork to learn of new music

my roommate does this and it drives me insane.

over the weekend he mentioned that he just started listening to boards of canada. and he's really INTO it. (see: 10.0 review of reissue last week)

yesterday he asked me if i have the new animal collective (reviewed yesterday).

it seems like he just waits for something to get over an 8.0 in pitchfork and then he decides to ask me for it. why does this bother me so much? i just feel it's general lazyness, really. and i don't need to hear him talk about how he aesthetically appreciates boards of canada's first album six years after it has come out.

i guess this is also related to the BULLYING thread.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the "ONLY" should be after the word "use" to get across the exact thing you're trying to say.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

why does this bother me so much? i just feel it's general lazyness, really.

and if he was reading RS, you would complain about that too..

I dont know, its a step in the right direction I suppose.. why not put him onto other sources for music instead of complaining on ILM?

nothingleft (nothingleft), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i disagree.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I use pitchfork to virtually wipe my ass.

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

why not put him onto other sources for music instead of complaining on ILM?

because BOTH of those albums, in addition to many more, have been in constant play in my apartment. he only shows interest when he reads about them on pitchfork.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

serve him his eviction notice, he is clearly not cool enough to breathe your exhaled air.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty maybe it's time to go outside and get some fresh air?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa. xpost.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If this was your roommate, you'd be pissed too.

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

God damn, you would be an unbearable roommate.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You should start making fake Pitchfork pages praising shit bands and see if he falls for it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What's annoying about those types is the fact they are sheep, yes, sheep. It's one thing to find an outlet to hear about new music, it's another to not be able to formulate your own opinions regarding it. This goes for any reader of RS, Pitchfork or any other publication. Pitchfork isn't to blame in this instance. And hell, not sure anyone is to blame. If your roomie feels he needs to build up some cred, let him. I'd wager that most music aficionados have gone through a period like this. Very few will admit, myself being one. It passes. You listen and listen and listen and then begin to develop your own ideas/opinions on what you are hearing. But yeah, no sense in really getting all worked up over it. He could be driving you nuts with Lynyrd Skynyrd or Toto instead.

beat, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious - aren't there plenty of real pages that do that anyway?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this thread could be retitled, people who's taste is exclusively subserviant to pitchfork's whims or I AM PITCHFORK'S BITCH. I think most Rockists that post on this board would be put off by a roommate like this.

My roommate is a dick (read=MP3-J), so I can commiserate.

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

right, whereas there's absolutely nothing rockist about playing "i got there first" with boc and animal collective albums!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's completely ROCKIST. That's why we're here.

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(massive x-post)

Absolutely - any person should have to get caloused hands digging through records in charity store and on holidays and everything before they get an album you like, shouldn't they.

Maybe you should start a record label where people have to submit a list of records they own to be suitable to be sold your label's records. Yeah...

___ (___), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you should start a record label where people have to submit a list of records they own to be suitable to be sold your label's records.

THIS is a FANTASTIC idea! Contest!

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

first off, i'm a music snob, you are are ALL music snobs, that's what separates you from the googlers.

what irritates me is my roommate doesn't form his own opinions on what the music sounds like when it is playing openly in the apartment, he only pays makes requests after it has been validated with a good rating by his favorite online-web-zine.

anyway, i'm making conversation, y'all can chill the FARK OUT.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

that should read "pays attention and makes requests"

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like a sharp kid.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that if this guy wasn't getting his tips from Pitchfork, he'd just be getting them from somewhere else. Some folks just need some social approval before they feel confident expressing an interest because they are insecure about people dissing something that they like. Would you still be complaining about this guy's behavior if he was instead getting his music tips from this board?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno cutty, i think everyone looks somewhere for hints as to what they might enjoy. if pitchfork has a good track record of praising records your friend likes, it makes sense that he keeps going back to look for more.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's probably not unreasonable to suggest that Cutty's roommate is intimidated by him, and I really wouldn't blame him. Cutty sounds like the ultimate mean record store clerk.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What's wrong with being an mp3-j? Are albums making a comeback alreadY?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

At least youre not living with some Radio-whore, who´s only insight in music comes from the neverending flow of pure s**t that reeks out of my soon-to-be-thrashed-out-of-the-window tuner.

(turns and yells into the apartment)
"No, honey - im not badmouthing you on the internet again, i promise!"

NUXX (NUXX), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

'honey'? I sense other issues.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

DEEZ NUTS

NUMBER 1 PITCHFORK FAN (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Animal Collective - reverb and delay = "PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN"

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonny,
My problem with being MP3-J (Darnielle, I hope this phrase haunts you to your grave!) is simple.

I like vinyl. I like the idea of a dj spining RECORDS. The idea of spinning MP3's seems stupid to me. It's too easy, all the work has been done, the cueing, the digging in the crates, the lugging of said crates, the blending, the timing. etc.

There is a lack of artistry, it offends me.

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but then you get to drink and dance and all that too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

djs who spin records can drink and dance too. Hell, I do.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Instead of viewing this as a negative (which it really isn't), view this as a positive - if you want to engage w/ your roomy musically, use his PForkin' as a springboard. "If you like BOC / AC, you might like...", for instance. This (taking cues from Forkdom) isn't any different from taking cues from any other critical source, and maybe (god forbid! the shame!) so-and-so would just rather be guided / told what's good instead of trying to dig & dig & dig for his own special somethings. Being inquisitive is still the same, regardless of the level of passion or interest. And sometimes listening isn't enough (and this happens tons) - it helps to gain a little perspective from a critic's / writer's analysis to notice the things that make the record noteworthy. So if said roomy is gloming onto your tastes because the Fork says these groups are worth checking out, man, pass the dutchie already.

It's safe to say that ANYONE that's had interest in Ameri/UK indie has had to deal with acquiring cred (for one's self, or for a peer group) at one point or another. (This is probably just reiterating Beat's point, but I'm leaving it in.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

true, true, all true.

but shouldn't anyone with a passion for music be responsible for doing their own legwork above and beyond pitchfork's BEST NEW MUSIC?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hstencil=OTM.

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even drink that much when I dj, but I at least want to get a few beers in me to loosen things up. However, the Optimo guys drink like fish!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"legwork"!!!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

DDB, some things become obsolete and fall away. It's just the way things work - the things which do not work are removed, and processes become more streamlined. If people didn't want this, it wouldn't happen. The mystique and aura of the vinyl DJ will always endure, but more and more people agree that it is impractical and expensive given technological advancements, and so the vinyl DJ is gradually marginalized and phased out. Did you ever think this was never going to happen? You can resent it, or embrace/accept it. You will seem a lot less ridiculous if you go for the latter option, trust me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

To be clear: Ridiculous as in "ranting old man."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

if vinyl djing was going to die out, it'd be dead already.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

if anything, thanks to hip-hop and techno and all forms of dance music, there's prolly more kids buying technics and mixers now than there were before.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

lets compromise and dj with cd players, ok?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

For the last time, pitchfork is not the central issue here. Yes, it would be the same if this friend bought all his music after reading about it in ILM, Pitchfork, or the weekly review section in his hometown newspaper.
However, me, cutty, and likely all of you reading this are obsessive music nerds. We know the clerks at our favourite music stores by name. We read or skim lots of music magazines. We buy things on spec because we've "heard that it's a good record label". Except for obessive music nerds, who has time for all that shit? We're the exceptions, not cutty's roommate. Normal people want to obtain their music through simpler means, and I can't blame them.
(many xposts)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

like, what's fun about doing legwork? i just want to acquire great music, how much "legwork" was required doesn't really matter to me. jeez, the less legwork the better. it would be great if there was one publication/site that i could rely upon 100% to come up with great recommendations, to save me the effort.

also, what's fun about worrying about how much "legwork" other people are doing?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothign wrong whatsoever with finding your own recommendation service. If it's Pitchfork or NME or Rolling Stone (or Stylus!) or ILM or Allmusic or the fucking Daily Express record reviews. The problem comes when this happens;

"What's this you're playing?"

"Boards Of Canada."

"Wow, I like it. PFM gave it a ten on Monday!"

"I played it last week and you said you hated it."

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that has happened many a time, nick.

in lieu of all the prior comments, even i can admit pitchfork has turned me on to a couple of things i have never heard of. such as M83 and the gooom label.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And any regular poster on ILM who denies being a music snob is a liar.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Love hurts, love scars,
Love wounds, and marks,
Any heart, not tough,
Or strong, enough
To take a lot of pain,
Take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts

I’m young, I know,
But even so
I know a thing, or two
I learned, from you
I really learned a lot,
Really learned a lot
Love is like a flame
It burns you when it’s hot
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts

Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves I guess
They’re not foolin’ me

I know it isn’t true,
I know it isn’t true
Love is just a lie,
Made to make you blue
Love hurts, ooh,ooh love hurts
Ooh,ooh love hurts

[guitar solo]

I know it isn’t true,
I know it isn’t true
Love is just a lie,
Made to make you blue
Love hurts, ooh ooh love hurts
Ooh ooh love hurts
Ooh ooh...

This would hit the point of utmost irony if the roommate walks in some day, turns off the stereo in disgust, and says "We've got to listen to this new album I just read about!" only to find out that particular album was what he just turned off.

I've mentioned music to friends, played them bits, offered the album to borrow, and been turned down only for them to become bigger fans than I ever had been. It's frustrating, but at least in the end you're listening to the same thing. Right? Right?!?

Oh, yes. I am well aware of this phenomenon. It's the "latebloomer recommends Mr. Show to his supposedly sketch comedy-loving classmates who ignore it by saying "oh that shows ok" but when David Cross becomes a semi-popular media personality they buy all the DVDs and start quoting his albums like fucking gospel" syndrome.

Using Pitchform to learn of new music is considerably better than using Top 40 radio to learn of new music at least.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but on Top 40 radio you get to hear it

i have 0 patience for this path: 1) reading about some kind of music 2) searching for it online 3) downloading it 4) listening to it through the speakers in my room.

i mean you might as well just fold yourself into a mobius strip and lock your door.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

On Top 40 radio you get to hear it is shit. And then it's up to you using the Net to find something good instead. Not that Pitchfork is the first place I'd search though.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

Ex-boyfriend I pretty much regret ever speaking to at this point discovered Pitchfork freshman year of college (via the SomethingAwful mockery of it I believe) at some point decided it was cool (or it would get him laid, one of the two) and now recommends me not just trite Pitchfork-touted stuff (which I would at least try to be okay with as it is at least new) but extremely old bands/albums. Most recent recommendations: Yo La Tengo, The Microphones, and the new Kanye West.

Am I allowed to wish he was dead?
