Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"That's it. A little crisper. Oh! A little crisper!"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps you can use this thread to explain the significance of Prince?

Aaron A., Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

anybody notice all the errors on the Voice's main page, article author-wise?

Unless Jeanne Fury has married Kandia Crazy Horse! :O

(though that still doesn't explain how Jessica Winter became Howard Hampton)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I am really robert christgau

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I KNEW you were only pretending to like that shit

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean it was so clearly an old guy pretending to be into a passing fad

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the significance of Prince is . . . the music. just ask Bob.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, that Musicology review features my favorite Christgau-ism, abbreviating keyboard(s) as "keyb(s)".

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the significance of Prince is . . . the music

indeed it is!!

epic hissy fit, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the psychological significance of Prince-And-His-Music? What does he represent or empower in a person.

Answer this question without mentioning the words 'funk' or 'funky'. Or 'funkified'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless Jeanne Fury has married Kandia Crazy Horse! :O

i wondered about this

heh, that Musicology review features my favorite Christgau-ism, abbreviating keyboard(s) as "keyb(s)".

i refuse to follow this convention (perhaps out of my proper noun obsession), but have to restrain myself every time I type the word.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Has slash fiction come to this?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What does he represent or empower in a person?

He gives short people a reason to live. Very empowering for us tiny folk.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the psychological significance of Prince-And-His-Music? What does he represent or empower in a person.

yes, let's answer this question so we drain the mystery out of his art

his music makes me happy

tricky disco, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a good review, not that you need it, but congrats Matos. I like the book too.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I read that this morning. Let me add to the congratulations.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"...although I know the guy, we're not so close that I was aware he'd grown up on welfare in a Minneapolis suburb—a redolent story that ties him to Prince in a way few can claim."

Full of Jeanne Fury Signifying, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Street cred.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm halfway through the book, and I like it a lot, but I can never find time to read it while listening to the album -- which is, of course, U&K.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i would have found that distracting. (it helped that when i read it the album was still in a box.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. I know what you mean, Jess, but I'm actually not all that familiar with Sign O the Times, and I want to be able to understand the context better.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't read it while listening to the album, however...

I got to that bit where Matos talks about his favorite Prince guitar solo residing on that Amsterdam boot and thought, "Hmmm, I'd like to hear that, I wonder how I would ever go about getting ahold of something like that." Ten seconds later, this was followed by, "HEY, I THINK I HAVE THAT ON CD!" A musician I played with a few years ago gave me it as a gift that I had totally forgotten about, and I listened to it while I read the rest of the book.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

matos i gave you an amazon review (i ain't read the book yet though)(i bought the willy sutton autobio instead)(cuz it was only three bucks)!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ott remains his controversial self in book form.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Today's Slate quotes Matos (one of the funniest lines from the book, IMO), although the article itself is pretty meh.

http://slate.msn.com/id/2099827/

I especially find Wolk's assertion that Prince's greatness lies in never "retracing his steps" to be dubious.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw Matos, I wish you could hear the Hot 8 Brass Band do Just My Imagination, you would die.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Doug's point is that during the pre-"Batdance" period, Prince didn't retrace his steps. And he really didn't. Retracing since then, or sometimes just standing still, yeah, there's been a lot of that. But some great music, too.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

In 'probably pretty obvious trope' time, have there been any (somewhat forced) parallels drawn between Bowie and Prince's careers yet by anyone? In that they both helped own/define a decade, starting from initial career-making consolidation (far more directly in Prince's case), the Big Theatrical Breakthrough (literally in Prince's case, figuratively with Bowie), remainder of the decade spent in various forms of commercial omnipresence combined with artistic highs, then for years afterward an extended period of attempts at staying in touch while pursuing own muse while this and that and well uh er hm HEY WAIT BIG CONCERT TOUR IN WHICH THE OLD SONGS WILL BE PLAYED FOR THE LAST TIME EVER.

They are a sensitive bunch.

I think Morris Day makes the choice obvious.

who was bowie's morris day?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Iggy Pop?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

touche.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

many x-posts, Rickey Wright, I see your point. I guess I would argue that Prince did re-trace before then, but I guess the argument Wolk is making is that those were not successful. Fair enough.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Friday, 7 May 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And, I know I am in the minority, but I love the Batman album, and I may just call out for Batdance at the Seattle show. It will be worth it just for the dirty looks.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Friday, 7 May 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"HEY WAIT BIG CONCERT TOUR IN WHICH THE OLD SONGS WILL BE PLAYED FOR THE LAST TIME EVER. "

this is true of everyone nowadays, though

the only thing they really have in common is being completely sui generis, i think

prince is obv a musician's musician, which bowie is not
