Hex, the band

If you know me, you're probably thinking this is going to be a Bark Psychosis thread -- but no, not today at least. This is about a strange LP I found at my local shop today by Hex -- a two-piece featuring Steve Kilbey from the Church and Donnette Thayer, whose name rings a bell but from where I cannot remember. The album's on Rough Trade, from '89, and it's really, really nice. I decided to restrain myself from doing the usual allmusic.com surprise-spoiler and instead see what you all have to say about it. Is this record a blip on anyone's radar?

Donnette used to be in Game Theory for awhile. Ned will have something to say shortly since he wrote the AMG reviews for both albums.

Both albums are kinda dramatic proto-shoegazery. I can't remember the last time I listened to either one, I should probably fish them out again. Very much a product of the times (1989-1990)

Ned wrote the reviews? Somehow that doesn't surprise me... ;-)

I don't think I've ever heard them discussed anywhere before, not even on here, which surprises me.

Gosh, and I hoped this was actually about short-lived band The Hex - one single on Troubleman Unlimited. You know what they sounded like. They were kewl. Footage on Supersphere.com rawked. Etc.

I remembered a video that was shown on 120 Minutes once or twice back when the albums were new, so I hunted down used copies online for peanuts a couple years ago. Despite the pedigree (Kilbey & Thayer), they're pretty average.

David R. - I am pretty sure it was an EP. I think TMU tossed it in some package to me. I liked it!

twelve years pass...

I really love the first Hex album. One of my favorite late-night listens.
