Taking Sides: Carly Simon VS Marilyn Manson

Hmmmmm, another valueable "Taking Sides" thread, but nonetheless a very difficult one. On the plus side, Simon has at least two AWESOME songs ("Nobody Does it Better" and "You're so Vain") and the odd swoonsome ballad with a certain, lighthearted appeal ("Anticipation" or "Give me all Night"). She also had really sexy lips in her heyday and a very adept voice.

Manson is crap though. I mean, it's good that he winds up some dumbass Conservative, Bible Bashing Americans - but he's a joke everywhere else. And the songs are not very good.

Carly Simon wins this.

search: carly's "vengeance"!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-but Carly simon is *American*.
What can she possibly tell you about your life?
How does she tell you about going to gigs and getting wankered on cheap cider, or shooting uop in a dismal flat in west london?
How does she tell you about androgynous pop stars, anorexia and the state of modern Britain?
For shame CRW.

'Why' is great, how to describe those chords? spine-jarring? teeth-squaring?

i like the pomp n' stomp of 'The Beautiful People' tho, and 'The Dope Show' - Manson would be better if he accentuated the glam factor more

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you always attempting to take the piss in your posts, Calum, or are you just taking A piss?

ANYWAY, the NIN song "Starfuckers, Inc" (supposedly a dis of Manson after he and Trent Reznor had a falling out) quotes the line from "You're So Vain" that says "I'll bet you think this song is about you, don't you?", so maybe the link isn't so tenuous after all.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't think of one pop star I admire who is anorexic - can't think why shooting up on cheap drugs in West fucking London (of ALL places) or anorexia or cheap cider would be of interest either...

CRW (CRW), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

carly wins in a landslide on account of her other awesome song: "the right thing to do."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

West London is too nice to be shooting up in

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll take you up on the cheap cider offer tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

All of London should be destroyed overnight on account of the fact it A) Houses the most unpleasant/ ignorant race of people ever and B) The entire city smells like wee and is just plain ugly. I really don't like London.

CRW (CRW), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not very nice, lots of people on this board live in london, would you want to see us all wiped out? also wtf london 'race'???!!!

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i like some songs by both carly simon and marilyn manson btw, but i've prob danced to 'the beautiful people' most often, so i vote for MM.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Carly Simon, of course. Nobody does it better.

j. taylor (ddduncan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

which race was CRW talking about do you think? why the HUMAN race of course, for that is the only real race, and the winner is everyone

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe it or not, "Nobody Does it Better" was my wife and I's wedding song (I was gunning for "You Only Live Twice" -- it had to be a Bond theme, incidentally). But, apart from that, Carly Simon's music largely sucks a barge-load of greasy cocks...but at least she's more interesting and has more original things to say than Marilyn Manson.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

_Mechanical Animals_ is still a great album, Alex.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

meh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta go for Carly, as the fact she's been soothing the wedding crowd for centuries shows her enormous talent. (Besides, you'd freak out the in-laws with Beautiful People). The fact MM is still here is due to a well paid stylist, and the American idea of "shock value".

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

strange, though, that carly's soothing the wedding crowd, as her execrable "that's the way i've always heard it should be" is one of the most cynical anti-marriage songs ever to hit the charts. still, i'm sticking with my vote for arly here.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

carly, not arly, d'oh.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Marilyn Manson, bah. Rode a wave of "controversy" to his fame he did, without having to write interesting music in the process. And his "controversial" views that got him there weren't all that controversial in the first place.

But Carly Simon is the suxORS

uh (eetface), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Marilyn Manson. I love him when he's on. But when he's off, it's quite a nasty sight. Still, when he's willing to submit to some self-mockery or pump up the glam, as someone else said, he's amusing and/or fantastic, respectively.

Carly Simon has a funny-looking face.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

unlike MM of course

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

he's hot!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, Carly did the best Bond song ever.

CRW (CRW), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Also...."You're So Vain" is such a towering peak of pop songwriting that she should prob. win on that alone....that said, Marilyn prob. has at least 6-10 songs that I actually think are pretty great, and I found his schtick wildly amusing back in the heyday....he sure was fun to have around!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I so hope Louis Armstrong's ghost visits you tonight and smashes all your crockery for saying that.

(x-post)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the period of time I was forced to listen to Antichrist Superstar was one of the most boring points of my life.

I could probably beat off to Carly Simon if I mentally aged her backwards 20 years.

Therefore, Carly now wins.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Comparing Carly to Manson is almost like...insulting my mother. Let's not defame Carly by comparing her to that ridiculous twat, okay?

Been a fan from an early age...my fave song of hers as a kid was "Legend In Your Own Time", but most of that Greatest Hits album from '77 is classic also. Come to think of it, I really like the production on her early stuff, too. It's very intimate, up close.

bimble (bimble), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(It is possible to like aspects of both of them, people!)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, why is no one asking why Alex's wedding song had to be a Bond Theme?

PS "I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)" is a great song.

Allyzay, Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, it's Alex! He probably made his wife shoot down the aisle on a zipline while he shot S.P.E.C.T.R.E. agents from the altar.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Shut up, that's what I planned to do at my wedding, now everyone's gonna do it :(

Allyzay, Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

_Mechanical Animals_ is a super ultra great CD and Manson is such a reliable kidder. The guitar sound along is a count-on-it Tannoy ripper of the finest vintage.
