I just picked up their new "Smash the system" C.d. and its REALLY GOOD. "Paper" sounds like acid-fried C86 pop. "You're in a bad way" puts a beaming smile on my face. "People get real" is so lovely I could just fall into it and never want to find my way back. "Avenue" is just a frikin masterpiece and I havent listened to the second C.D. cos the first one is SO good. I was kinda biased against them in the past cos I always thought they were Brit-pop also-rans or some sort...So does anyone wanna tell me more about St. Etienne or wat albums I need to buy cos I'm falling in love with 'em.,..

As far as Tim goes about "Hug my soul"..it still sounds like a pisstake and I cant get into it

Michael - I imagine that "Hug My Soul" sounds much better in the context of Tiger Bay, where all the songs are very formal, than on a greatest hits album. I've heard people say before that it sounds like a caricature of Saint Etienne, which is close to pisstake I guess, but I honestly think it's one of their lovelier "big" songs. Of course, most all of their songs are lovely, so it's hard to tell.

The first four tracks on "Tiger Bat" I've always thought to be extremely well sequenced, and "Hug My Soul" sounds indeed amazing right after the "Urban Clearway" massive opening. The same logic applies to "Pale Movie", I reckon.

Would "Tiger Bat" be a terrible or great name for a record I wonder.

I think would be great. Mike Hanle y should use it, as part of a multi-album cycle about chicken bears.

I think Hug My Soul and Pale Movie are good without context, though.
