this is possibly the best hip hop magazine in the world today. or in england at least. failing that, its definitely the best to be published in cambridge. that's pretty uncontestable i think.

I heart HHC.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

theyre falling off though, they didnt even lay into the new vast aire album. not saying its shit, but they should at least have attempted to say it was.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that in the Nas issue? The Infinite Livez thing was weak beyond hell, those strip style things have been pretty funny in the past (Pitman, Mighty Casey), but that was just an extended two-page advert for his shitty album.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought they fell off by the time I left school (4 years ago). Liked the Pitman strip tho'. The sidebar column with the spoof rappers who liked to say shit like "Bedlam Mob got gay" was stone-cold legend.

i sure miss the mixtapes they used to give on the front cover. the scratch perverts/rawkus mix was fine stuff. as were the tommy boy mixes ..

one year passes...
they still have funny pieces, and a few little opinion columns (which are tiny though), but apart from that, and a few regular features, the album reviews and interviews are really really boring now. no one writing anything interesting. like most music mags, it reads like its sponsored by PR people or is just tyring to appease advertisers by not saying anything remotely critical or honest about anyone. some good writers but the content is a far too dull. that looooooooooooooooooong sway piece was well boring, the constant g unit coverage is nauseating, and im sure theyre just doing the best they can do, but the american rap mags are still better.

umm, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

It's a dreadful mag, with the occasional barely toleraable review or whatever. Having said that, I've really loved some of its covermounts, so I still buy it pretty often.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

I hadn't purchased a copy of this magazine since the days when MC Duke or Hardnoise stopped appearing on the cover. But I did fairly recently and was suprised to see that they now had a centrefold. It did make me think what some of the early staff writers for the mag would have thought of such a move, but hey - times change...

Other than that umm and Martin have said the rest.

Still better than mixmag though...

charlie blimey (charlieblimey), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

i wouldnt go so far as to call it 'dreadful' martin. well ok, maybe i would.

speaking of mixmag, they had a really good roots manuva piece in the latest issue. im sure hhc probably have to please advertisers and record company bods and they dont want to lose all the newbies who are into hip hop so cant say anything too critical about it, but fuck me if the pieces on g unit and juvenille and the like arent dreary. i like the fact as an american, some of the mag is a change from what you get in US rags but even so... it doesnt compare to how it was a decade or so back.

ummmmmm, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

HHC needs more "What would it be like if Keek Da Sneak and Percee P were on Deal or No Deal?" features and less "Philip Mlynar explains the socio-political ramifications of Spank Rock using a Bow Wow Wow sample".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it does seem like some hhc writers take themselves a bit too seriously these days. its affecting the whole mag with all those effervescent personality profiles (does anyone in the uk really care that much about sway's life story???). i used to like hhc for its frankness.

ummmm, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

they reviewed charizma's album in late 04 by saying 'why listen to this when you could be playing the absolutely fantastic lil flip!'

++++++, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

im divided as to whether thats a good thing.

ummm, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

i applaud them for their bold stance in dissing rawkus and pete rock to spend more time promoting ebony eyez, guerilla black and jackie-o

+++++, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

is that the mag that published dk's top ten grills list?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

yup

++++, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

LOL....GRILLS

++++, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

the new issue is really, really good. i dont feel the urge to listen to half the stuff they cover anymore but still a good read.

Name a rapper with oversized lips who produces the goods on a regular basis. Exactly.

Sorry, I bought Hip-Hop Connection yesterday and I'm feeling all B- Boyed out.

three months pass...

RIP.

Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 11:01 (sixteen years ago)

really? I know i haven't bought it in about 6 months, but I love this mag. rip. this magazine (and westwood) are pretty essential footnotes for my teenage years - it's even the only magazine i wrote into (back when this was an actual thing.)

silly ho (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah the current GOAT issue or whatever it is is the last one - not sure if they actually say that in the mag but they knew it would be, I believe. Doesn't seem like there's any more complex reason than no fucker buying music magazines of any type atm
