Thom Yorke and Mike Skinner to collaborate on charity record?

Two of Britain’s biggest music stars are teaming up to raise money for the people's benefit charity, Outcry. Thom Yorke from Radiohead and Mike Skinner from rap group The Streets will be going into the studio next week to record a cover version of Phil Collins' "Another Day In Paradise".

The single is to be released on Parlophone in August with 50% of profits going to the charity. Outcry is a voluntary aid group helping the needy and poverty-stricken in the UK and throughout the world.

"I'm well excited about this one," said Skinner "I met Thom late last year and he's a great bloke - not how you'd imagine. We're doing this record because we thought it would be a good idea to mess with people's heads a bit, I mean The Streets versus Radiohead versus Phil Collins - who'd have thought it? But most of all we're doing this because it's for a cause we both feel strongly about, politically and socially."

Has the world gone mad?!

"I'm a creep and don't you know it"? (Sun headline?)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no way in fuck. Plus the guy from Coldplay is the one who did a record w/ Skinner--and look how far Parlophone let that go.

kattt, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

At first its a scary thing, like the first look into a deep abyss, but then - intriguing........ I just hope it doesnt get toooo sentimental, and will probably fail miserably by doing just so....

I'd actually rather here a load of tramps cover "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Fit But You Know It", actually.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean The Streets versus Radiohead versus Phil Collins - who'd have thought it?
Yes, there's a good reason why nobody had thought of it ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopefully it will be an American style Hip Hop/R and B song, where Skinner raps the verses and Yorke sings the hook.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Love this part:

"he's a great bloke - not how you'd imagine."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Where did this news come from, anyway? Because I can't find anything other that what's on this thread, and I am suspecting a hoax.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto -- the Phil Collins bit nudges it right over the edge of disbelief.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh c'mon it's clearly a wind-up! i think we should go back to punning radiohead/mike skinner collaborations eg 'streets spirit'

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea about the Coldplay thing though - did that really happen?

There's a track on the new Streets called "Dry Your Eyes," I think, and Mr. Martin is doubtless very sensitive and thoughtful all over it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

For the first time I'm trying to imagine what the song would actually sound like. The coda towards the end would have Thom singing "para-para-paradiiiisse" while Skinner broods vehemently over the top "just think abaaat it" and then the signature riff kicks in with a mock garage beat a bit like the one on "Stay Positive" or something.

C'mon, it's got potential!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, very amused with roxymuzak... and a little bit with stevenm. You tried. Yes, Chris Martin did vocals on "Dry Your Eyes" but Parlophone had a hissy fit and they were removed.

Yo, I heard Noam was out of the rap game?!

kattt, Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did Parlophone get cross? Was it because Coldplay are really really really really really crap?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

They aren't so-o bad, really. It must have "compromised the integrity of the artist" for him to appear on a little hip-hop record for an independent label. Plus, maybe Chris flipped da switch and dropped some verses. Or it just was awful. You pick.

katttt, Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

zane asks mike the first gig he ever saw.
mike says it was radiohead.

he went on to say hillariously that he liked 'creep',
but he couldnt recall the name of it.

I think "You Never Wash Up After Yourself" sounds the most like an actual Streets/Radiohead hybrid.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit. I am spinning around and doing splits on the floor of the computer lab. This is the best Phil Collins news since ODB did "Sussudio."

THANK YOU, SATAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've laughed more at this thread than any other in a long time. Either you're very clever or I am really easy to amuse. Or high.

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, you DID see this was in fact a joke? ;-)

Who else has the displeasure of going to UCI?!

Check my e-mail address, m'friend! First I went to (grad) school here, now I work here.

Ah, to think I almost took Home EC. I'm only interested in that Mrs. degree (with a minor in Global Sustainability)

Have we branched to other band mixtures now? We couldn't have exhausted all of the possibilities yet. Reach deep!

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure we can come up with a thread about it.

(I actually work over at the Langson Library, and DJed at KUCI for about eight years.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we should do a thread in which we combine Ned's musical interests with food items.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Used to work at the Science Lib but am lowly "Lab Assitant II" these days. Would like to be involved with KUCI. But again...this laziness...Though sometimes I cringe at who they let on the air, smug as I am.

Start the thread, maestro

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

In terms of a thread -- well I kinda did. General music/food crossover for everyone, not just me, would have more intrinsic value. ;-)

Though sometimes I cringe at who they let on the air

Precisely why YOU must get on the air. There's a difference between a radio DJ and an actually good one, and if you think you can do a better job.

You worked at SL? Which department or area?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

if you think you can do a better job.

Er, forgot to complete that: "...then by all means, get over to the station!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

So I just show up with my songs and get thrown on the air? groovy.

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, you might be asked to wait for a bit here and there. The station just moved to be over by the Science Library anyway, ergo if you're in the area, TAKE COMMAND.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, from one lovely trailor to another. WILL DO ...And KUCI will be forever thankful!

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yet another ILXor on the air!

(There are actually a few UCI associated people on these boards, including myself, Donut Bitch, Elvis Telecom, Orbit and others, and there's at least a couple more on the way.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice to know I am not alone in the bubble.

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Mainly lurking, laughing at the witty little comments I could have never written. Been a few months, only just started posting.
Thanks, everyone likes a warm welcome!
