What's the next album that should get the Smile/Pet Sounds played live/in sequence treatment?

In the Guardian today Dorian Lynskey suggests Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies, which seems reasonable as all five Zombies are still alive, compos mentis and talking to each other.

But what canonic (or non-canonic) albums would you like to see performed live and in sequence by the artists, the relative mortality and mentality of individual artists/band members having been taken into consideration?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to see the entire white album performed by just paul and ringo

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Giant Steps - Boo Radleys.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The White Album...by Phish.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

twos up on Giant Steps. My God what I'd pay to see that live!

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Paris 1919?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Metal Box

Robert Moore (treble), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone here see Slayer doing all of Reign in Blood on their tour last year, and how was it if you did?
That would be an ideal fantasy submission to this list, apart from the fact that it has already happened.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

KLF 'Chill out' would be a fascinating one too, especially as I once read that the album itself is actually an extract from an improvised 4 1/2 hour long piece!

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Sweet, In Reverse

Joseph McCombs, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music

... except it's already been done

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Ringo should perform the entire White Album solo.

meister, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Chinese Democracy? like I care part 2.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Lexicon of Love" with full string section would be a winner.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

wait one of the Zombies just died recently. or i dreamt it.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Aphex Twin SAWII

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Bat Out of Hell, performed not by Meatloaf, but by Matmos.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as I know, all five Zombies are still with us. Colin Blunstone is, amongst other things, my hairdresser's cousin.

Personally I would like to see Tusk done in sequence, but as Christine McVie's retired I guess that's scuppered that.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking Heads, Remain In Light.

I'd travel for an Odessey & Oracle concert.

mike a, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Shoot out the Lights R& L Thompson

de, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Clapton playing the entire Derek & the Dominos album.

meister, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as I know, all five Zombies are still with us.

that will be welcome and surprising news to the family of the late paul atkinson.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The ads for recent Zombies tour claimed that the majority of "O&O" would be performed. I wish I hadn't had to go out of town the weekend they played here.

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Slanted and Enchanted" w/Jay-Z, duh

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Paul Atkinson died about a month ago. The Zombies show I saw here included several things from "Odessey." They could swing it, I'm sure.

I'd like to see "Notorious Byrd Bros." done live. "Clear Spot" would be interesting. "Radio City," why not? If Brian Wilson were really brave, he'd do "Love You." I'd pay big money to see that.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

those recent "zombies" shows were only two zombies, blunstone and argent, right? capable of singing zombies songs and of putting on great shows, but not quite the zombies.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music
... except it's already been done

-- Dadaismus (kcoyne3...), May 5th, 2004.

Really?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yeah--Chris White is the other real essential. But the "Zombies" were damned good. Too bad about Paul Atkinson--frankly, though, his guitar was pretty vestigal to the whole sound. So maybe the four could get together. Very few shows I've seen gave me what Blunstone's voice did--total bliss.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

all five zombies were in the room together for at least one of the blunstone-argent shows in nyc, when they first went on the road a few years ago, and none of the others made a move for the stage. which suggests it isn't likely that four of 'em are likely to be playing together anytime soon.

i agree about blunstone's voice delivering total bliss.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, thirded. I saw 'em (Argent/Blunstone) in 2002 and I couldn't believe how great Blunstone's voice STILL sounded. I think the second song they did was "This Will Be Our Year", and I wanted to cry. Wait, maybe I did cry. Their bassist on that tour was the guy from Argent (the band).

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Bassist was Jim Rodford, who played on some of the later "Zombies" recordings sans Blunstone, with Argent, later with the brothers Davies.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

God, yeah, that's right; I had forgotten that Rodford did time in the latter-day Kinks. Funny coincidence that you mention that as I've been think of that "Living On A Thin Line" song all day today after viewing its expert use in the Sopranos episode I watched last night. Man, they do great things with music on that show. It's a good song that I had totally forgotten about.

And the guitar player on that tour was a brother of Don "Ozzy Osbourne" Airey.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, Roxy Music would be good, pete b. I'm gonna go for...Don't Stand Me Down by Dexys Midnight Runners. Don't know if its really unhip and people are gonna make fun of me, but, its a great album - and they could do all the talky bits on stage...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

man i just listened to clear spot loud as shit a second ago. IM GONNA MAGENTIZE YA!!!

but lets see...
song cycle - van dyke parks
astral weeks - the other van

but yea, odyssey and oracle would be good. someone start an internet rumor so it builds hype and theyre pressured into doing it.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd vote for Sweetheart Of The Rodeo even without Gram.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

suede did something like this a couple months ago, right?

and didnt primus do the same w/ uh.. chocolate and cheese or something like that?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

wire did it with pink flag for the flag:burning show at the Barbican

coco, Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Song Cycle" would be a great one but the only people there would the people on this thread

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Song Cycle does sound like it should be performed live with backing singers, cycling elephants, jugglers, go-go dancers, massive backdrops etc in the biggest fuck off opera hall the world has ever seen.

I would go.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What did Van Dyke Parks play on his recent concert tours?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Are all the Have Moicy! people still alive? That'd be cool.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

But yeah, the White Album with Paul and Ringo is cooler. It'd be like Lightning Bolt!

And here I was thinking I might be able to contribute something to this thread.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

With a full horn section, singing saw, the *right* bombastic drum sound, and all other instruments in place...

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. I'd probably stop going to concerts after that.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i might go to see paul mcartney perform his part from "vegetables" if it was free. maybe.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

sonic youth - confusion is sex. like bob would say no.

autechre - amber. at the hollywood bowl, or in my living room.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i think dylan and whats left of the band should completely recreate their 66 tour.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say Blood on the Tracks or Hejira but Dylan and Joni's current sound would probably spoil the whole thing.

I'm not sure about this whole trend, as it really takes something away from the live experience, the surprise and the spontaneity of it.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 7 May 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Abba Gold.
