anybody heard this one yet? i'm hearing good things about it.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend got it yesterday and LOVES it. i'm hoping to steal it from her tonight. wish me luck.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my friends who knows about these things has been raving about it too, it got me interested.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to try to pick it up tonight, will report back.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm...so what are they like in general, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

they are like the oblivians....if they sucked.

ddb, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

they are like the oblivians....if they sucked.

That's a little bit of a heavy-handed dismissal.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

they don't suck

all their records have been pretty different, this latest one is being hailed as the one that integrates the power pop and country rock excursions of their last 2 records & the compulsive gamblers stuff with the primal oblivians stuff, but I haven't heard it yet.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, yes it was.

I went and saw them 2 years ago and was TOTALLY let down. Granted it was 2 years ago and maybe they are good now...but the OBLIVIANS ruled.

ddb, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Time Bomb High School (was that the name of the albuM? or just a song on it, damn memory!) was excellent, a bit of oblivians, but also the best parts of the E Street Band and some country. I'm eager to hear the new one.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I know what you're saying, ddb. the oblivians are kind of hard to top, but I liked that Greg went in a completely different direction with the first Reigning Sound record. I'm actually more skeptical of this "return to form" stuff people are saying about the new one. i hope it's not too obliviansy.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and i think it is pretty much an entirely different band from 2 yrs ago too, just 2 original members i think

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I went and saw them 2 years ago and was TOTALLY let down. Granted it was 2 years ago and maybe they are good now...but the OBLIVIANS ruled.

i had the same experience last year. really frustrating, because with a band like this the shows should blow the recorded material out of the water. i like the albums, though, first one especially.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I've only heard the first record...and my reaction was..WHAT THE FUCK....but I wouldn't be against hearing this new one and giving it a fair shake.

ok, fritz...i'll def. check it out

ddb, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(it's kind of funny that no-one on this thread has heard the album in question yet! oh well, it just came out)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(total aside: i was listening to the ponys album at work yesterday, which made me wonder when the next fritz w in the red thread was going to pop up. lo and behold.)

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha! what do you think of the ponys lp? I thought it doesn't top that great 7 inch from last year as far as I can tell - a little long and samey but still good, they're better live.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to it twice last week, and it seemed to have two fewer songs than the two memorable ones on their previous album. But, um, maybe that's just me...

chuck, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

are you talking ponys or reigning sound?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that was new reigning sound i was talking about, by the way. the ponys album is way better. and the hiss album may well be better than the ponys album (which reminds me of the fever album, for some reason. maybe because both bands remind me of richard hell and the voidods.) new black lips album is good, too, by the way. as is the peelers album.

chuck, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

big xpost
i'm such a sucker for it. agreed that it drags towards the end, but it hits the right garagey power pop/wall of sound/new wave/tom verlaine buttons for me.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

more or less mediocre, i just decided in the last half hour: catholic boys, real losers, riverboat gamblers.

chuck, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't heard the catholic boys but real losers & riverboat gamblers = less than mediocre.

I'm dying to hear that new black lips record. their first one might be my favourite rock record of the past few years. and they're all like 19 yrs old too.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard it...
I think it's a great album. It's a pretty raw recording, not quite as crunchy and primitive as the Oblivians, but the songs are really, really top-notch. Better songs than the Ponys, I think.
In The Red seems to be only putting out really good albums now. As long as Boss Hog stays broken up, they should be able to keep it up.

by the way, the R.S. band's a 3-pc. now, but all three dudes are original members.

Mike Dixon, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

As for their catalogue, one show at the Gibson Lounge a year or so back I think described it best. The first set was Tome Bomb High School and similar sounding stuff and it really was incredible. It was like the Oblivions with cheezier lyrics and more melodic. Good melodic songs sped up and with a lot of energy. The second set was their pre-TBHS stuff. Really slowed down country rock that verged on alt-country. It may have been good to people who dig that stuff, but it ain't my thing.

Overall TBHS is a decent album, but MUCH better live. It's a little too ummm polished on the album, I guess. I really like them more raucous. On the album it's a bit more zanaxed and live I've seen Greg break a string every song for the first three or four. There's a great garage rock jittery vibe happening at their shows that I love. And between losing the keys and recording their new album they sounded great. It was like it freed them up a bit.

Haven't heard anything since then. Was out of town for the album release, and generally haven't been going to as many shows lately.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought it last week, but I've only listened to it once. It's way closer to the Oblivians than the previous records were, but I liked Time Bomb High School a lot more.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

love it, just totally raw rock'n'soul - the e street band comparison is spot on, though a skeletal E Street band... the Sam & Dave cover is bitchen. 'If You Can't Give Me Everything' is such a great ballad, too.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Reigning Sound still retains their original drummer and bass player, and of course Greg. Alex Greene has left the fold, having a child and new mortgage that was not getting taken care of my the intermittent RS gigs. No hard feelings, I don't think, because he was at one of their gigs in December.

Vanessa, Thursday, 6 May 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I did end up getting this over the weekend. I didn't get into it at all at first, I couldn't even listen all the way through because of the mix (vocals mixed low, piercing guitars and cymbals that totally cover up the drums). It's grown on me a lot in a couple of days though.

You have to crank it to get any kind of clarity, which is probably intentional, those bastards. A healthy chunk of the songs are pretty great, and even though I would change some things there's no denying that the production does fit the style.

I like a band who really appreciates the value of a tambourine.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful (the album in question, of course). That's all I got.

Stepher (Stephie), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to it again, I only like "We Repel Each Other" and a couple of the covers. Big disappointment.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah Fritz, you obviously are better informed than I! Although Greg Roberson plays drums on Too Much Guitar, evidently they will have a new drummer when they go out on tour in July! (Just read a post from Jeremy the bass player on another board.) They are touring with the Hives and Sahara Hot Nights. Those Hives guys are huge Compulsive Gamblers fans. :)

three weeks pass...
I'm going to revive this thread considering I just listened to this album after a long time of hating the band for personal reasons.

It's really good but it's lacking in something that makes it a good Greg album. Any comments about what that might be.

And I heard the Catholic Boys mentioned upthread. I'm from Milwaukee and have seen them a great many times. I would like to hear opinions on this, considering that they are taken as gods here.

Camtron (Cameron), Sunday, 6 June 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A not particularily good production (from two different sets, with two different engineers) causes it to sound muddled and same-y from start to finish. GC is a great songwriter, but you wouldn't know it from this album.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 6 June 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

everybody I know including thinks this album fucking rules the school, this thread is from bizarro universe or something

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely! Love this album WTF ILM

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

Doesn't seem too bizarro to me. Not all that much hatin' from what I'm seeing. Plus it's kind of an old thread. The Oblivians shadow is still hanging here a bit - and it doesn't add much to making sense of what he's trying to do.

I still prefer the "Home For Orphans" versions of "Medication" and "Funny Thing" - and I remember being a bit dubious about TMG before it came out. I thought the one before it, "Time Bomb High School", was a real let-down after "Break Up Break Down" which is brilliant.

I mentioned this on another RS thread but if you're a fan - search out the zipfiles of the radio show he hosted in Milwaukee a couple of years ago. Greg playing 2 hours of his favorite 45's from his own collection - great garage, soul, powerpop, and hillbilly stuff. It's googlable.

Brio, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

ahhh see I think Time Bomb High School is excellent. The new one's lovely as well, and Too Much Guitar, at least for the first nine songs, is unfuckwithable

that sex version of "blue thunder." (Mr. Que), Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

if you can't give me everything, then don't you gimme nothin' at all.

Joint Custody (ian), Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

Don't get me wrong... I do like a lot of TBHS - "Straight Shooter" especially - and, if it wasn't clear there, I like TMG a lot too.

But - and this might just be me getting older - I kind of prefer Greg in his Dillard & Clark mode, like on "Break Up Break Down" and "Home For Orphans".

"Love & Curses" seems like a nice balance of the two I think, gotta give that some more listens.

Brio, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

The "You Got Me Humming" cover achieves everything that the last 35 years of The Rolling Stones' attempts at covering soul songs have failed at. I love how it sounds like there's horns buried in there, though I think it's just feedback. In my perfect world, Jay Reatard would have lived to produce a Rubin-like rescue of the Rolling Stones. The man could do muddy mid-range.

bendy, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

^That's a thought.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

Wouldn't agree that the Stones failed at covering soul... but anyway Greg talks about that Hummin cover on that radio show a bit - and he plays the Gino Washington version he based his cover on... it's rom an acetate of which he may own the only copy! It is an amazing arrangement of the song.

Brio, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsD-J2_9Uig
now I'm confused if this is Gino Washington(Detroit) or Geno Washington (American who settled in UK and stole Gino's name & inspired the Dexy's Song) - Greg definitely seemed under the impression it was Gino

Brio, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

this album rules and the oblivions ruled hard and pretty much everything this dude has ever done rules hard.
