does anyone listen to them except me?

CAss (CAss), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

oh well.........i love them

CAss (CAss), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

They're pathetic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex is a little harsh, but i'm gathering his opinion is echoed by most ILMers. i'll be the first to step forward and defend them though, i have a weak spot for Davey Havok's overboard goth-punk performance. i wasn't too excited by the major label debut, but The Art of Drowning is a damn solid pop-punk album. i'll take AFI any day over the Simple Plan/Sum 41 contingency any day.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll take AFI any day over the Simple Plan/Sum 41 contingency any day.

I'll begrudgingly agree on this point.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to put the lot of them on a ship and sink it off the coast of a small, foreign nation.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Like Canada.

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

please mentally remove one of the "any day" from my post, your choice.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

They're all right. Probably one of the few acts on alt radio that wouldn't make me change the station.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

this band used to be a normal punk band. my friend, whose old band used to plays shows with them, ran into their lead singer one day and he'd gone completely goth. I vaguely remember hearing older stuff by them and it was totally run of the mill punk shit. I heard something on the radio the other day and almost died it was so crap.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

back when i was a young middle school punker, i was really into the Black Sails In The Sunset album. I also liked Art of Drowning, but not so much. Now... I dunno, I could probably deal with listening to those two albums again. All of the stuff I've heard from before that was totally lame, and I haven't heard anything since.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

AFI are fucking awesome. Best punk band ever.

adam (adam), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate this band so much.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like all the good parts of music all mashed up and sung by a little girl in the body of an aging goth guy.

adam (adam), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

all the good parts of music = power chords?

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

AFI?

Why have they not burned to death?

Aja (aja), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

because of your classmates, mostly.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What is that supposed to mean?

I don't know anyone who listens to them, or knows them. And there local!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does a band playing power chords relegate them to lesser status?

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i figure their audience is mostly middle school/high school kids.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe out of SF, I don't know.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 6 May 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ukiah represent, bitch!

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 6 May 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

all the good parts of music = power chords?

Power chords are like all the good parts of regular chords all smushed up. Rockin'!

adam (adam), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

AFI are fucking awesome. Best punk band ever

Sorry, but you're an idiot.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

they were much more tolerable before their singer became a pretty girl. back when he wanted to be danzig.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Afi's album -sing the sorrow is my favourite one!

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is that?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

because i think the songs are fantastic and have a lot of meaning. its very emotional.....

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I know plenty of people college aged that love AFI. they were a band with some following before they made it big...most of the fans hate the new album.

I don't know much about them at all.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that should read most of the OLD fans, because the album did create a lot of new ones

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i know that alot of the fans hate the new album but its my favourite one.... i love them all though

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what does afi stand for? I was told back in the day that the band used to be called a bunch of fucking idiots and they had to abbreviate it. but i could be wrong.

anyway,
EAST BAY HARD CORE

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

A fire inside. They should be set aflame, that way they'd be a fire inside and outside.

Oh, and they're utter crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, I'm still confused on the "power chords" analogy paired with younger fanbase.

I mean, Cryptic Slaughter is mostly power chords and I don't see a lot of middle/high schoolers listening to them.

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

nevermind, it appears I mistook the reply after my power chords post to be to me when it wasn't. Carry on, then!

AT LEAST I GOT TO PLUG CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER!

uh (eetface), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it stands for - a fire inside.
a friend of mine who HATES THEM calls them absolute fucking idiots.....

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 6 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Any band that has posed for a multiple-page fashion spread inside of AP magazine is crap.

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

They try really hard.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

not really.

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sing the Sorrow is their best one. The early stuff is dull. I pretty much think any music is better with a little goth in it though perversely goth music is generally crap.

adam (adam), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

well i dont think they sound much diff at all. it all sounds the same to me. ive hated them for years (gimme a cookie)

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

of course they sound different??
adam ... which songs do u like the best from sing the sorrow?
im glad someone shares my passion

CAss (CAss), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Any band that has posed for a multiple-page fashion spread inside of AP magazine is crap."

Yeah, AP has become the Circus of this generation.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's now almost exclusively pandering to the nu-punk/hardcore/mall-emo crowd.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year they were hyping AFI's new album as this generation's Nevermind or something like that.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ANYWAY...AFI are eh...they're entertaining. Their last album sucked. The Art of Drowning was actually all right.

"they were much more tolerable before their singer became a pretty girl. back when he wanted to be danzig. "

OTM.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

he has a really bad band that trys to sound like rick ruben era danzig called son of sam. it makes me laugh.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Leaving Song 2 owwwwnnnnzzzzzz.

adam (adam), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

a friend of mine who HATES THEM calls them absolute fucking idiots.....

Heh. Given that AFI's initials have stood for a number of different names over the course of their career, this is more OTM than you realize.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I really can't stand Girls Not Grey or The Leaving Song Part 2. That new one where they try to sound like Tool during the verses and emo
during the choruses is tolerable (at best). I forgot the name of it...

billstevejim, Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, it's called "Silver and Cold."

billstevejim, Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

please don't hurt me...i love AFI love sing the sorrow and the art of drowning..favorite song by them..gotta be God called in sick today. best punk group ever though hmmm. no. id have to say operation ivy is best ever in my book. along with social d, bad religion, rancid(just because of ..and out came the wolves)

jubietube, Sunday, 9 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

aghh, attack of the pre-teen/teen neo punks.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Sunday, 9 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep liking "Girl's Not Grey" more and more. Please kill me before I infect the others.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 9 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on. Operation Ivy are almost as bad as the Ramones.

adam (adam), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ramones badmouthing will not be tolerated.

uh (eetface), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring it bitch.

adam (adam), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

*gets in Karate Kid stance from first movie*

it's on

uh (eetface), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Which is the stance from the first movie? How is it superior to stances from the other movies? And anyway it doesn't change the fact that I've seen Bloodsport like 50 times=I am a kickboxing pimp x50.

adam (adam), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The American Film Institute s'okay by me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you make your tits move independently a la Bolo Yeung, adam?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, you know the stance. It's famous....the one where he brings his arms up and raises his right knee, as if preparing for a jumping front-kick, and then as soon as the bell rings, kicks the guy in the face?

AND I'VE SEEN BLOODSPORT TOO. YEA.

*throws sand in your eyes*

Come on, Duks!

uh (eetface), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The guy from Revenge of the Nerds would eat Ralph Maccio for breakfast.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

who, Lamar?

uh (eetface), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you said you'd seen Bloodsport.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"afi" is the 6th most popular search term on MySpace (aka nu-friendster). Emo is third.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 10 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on. Operation Ivy are almost as bad as the Ramones.

Dismemberment is too good for the likes of you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)
