Any fans of Rocket From the Crypt? I just picked up "Group Sounds" and it sounds pretty good upon first listen.

Ghost Shark, Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, we actually haven't had a thread just on these guys yet, I think! Though we've had our debates. Anyway, Donut Bitch to thread as THEE consummate fan, but they're a damn great band and pretty much always have been, put on some of the best shows I've seen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know much about them, but I have Scream Dracula Scream and it's mega awesome....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably my favorite band working today. And their latest album was their best yet!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

really, man I kinda lost track of them, I should check them out....what's that other side band they have that's supposed to be good too?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

best live show I've ever seen too (though it's not like I've seen that many)

Hot Snakes! And they're wonderful

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I think 2001's Group Sounds was their musical peak but 2002's Live From Camp X-Ray was their strongest lyrically. I really think they're on a rool.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

roll, I mean. but RFTC roolz too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also Speedo's other other side band the Sultans, whose latest album Shipwrecked is mighty fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

plus one of the other guys is in Beehive & The Barracudas.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

....busy guys.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 6 May 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hot Snakes = awesome

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

they actually played twice in town for their Group Sounds tour. First they did a lunchtime show at a local record/video store, where they did acoustic covers of "Down On The Boondocks" and the Wipers' "Blue Cowboy" as well as some originals. About two months later they played a full electric set at a club. Both times there wasn't a huge audience (the band even joked about it later when I was backstage) so it felt pretty surprising and special to see them at their prime in two very different shows.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and I'll admit that Automatic Midnight is probably better than all RFTC albums but Group Sounds.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much agree with Anthony, except I'd dare say Live From Camp X-Ray is their best album in all respects.

The new Sultans album Shipwrecked has just been released (Sultans being another Reis three piece side project). It's more of a stripped Rocket sound than Ghost Ship and, so far, not as great as Ghost Ship, but I'm still letting Shipwrecked seap in.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Still though, the entirely of Drive Like Jehu's output outdoes anything Reis has done to date, IMHO.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

entirety even

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I mentioned the Sultans up above already DO YOU NOT LOVE ME.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love you more than uh. (this line is best taken out of context)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Your love is like...uh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I must confess that Drive Like Jehu, while enjoyable, doesn't do as much for me as Hot Snakes (let alone RFTC). I'm probably just too much of a nut for verse chorus verse.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hot snakes >>> drive like jehu

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, I was at that acoustic show at Lou's. Fine times. I was down at Lou's this afternoon as a matter of fact, picking up the new Mission of Burma.

The best RFTC record is The State of the Art is On Fire. I've got everything else they've put out but I have stayed away from X-Ray so far because it seems to have lost momentum from everything I've heard. The rocket seems to be petering out. Hot Snakes cast off a lot of weight that seemed to be holding Reis down, and I love that band more than Rocket. Jehu's another story. Jehu exists on a higher plane.

The Sultans are solid through and through. Very fun.

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I second that regarding 'State of Art...'. They're my earliest 'favourite band' that I still listen to now (eight years on).

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 May 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The first gig I ever saw was RFTC after Scream Dracula Scream...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

For me, the essentials are HOT CHARITY, CIRCA: NOW!, SCREAM DRACULA SCREAM, and LIVE FROM CAMP X-RAY (which has an insanely great opening track, "I'm Not Invisible"). And always a great live show.

doug (doug), Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Circa: Now! was so awesome when I was 15. I should seek it out. Their stuff lately, since SDS (which isn't really "lately"), reminds me a lot of Doug & the Slugs, and not necessarily in a bad way.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, I was at that acoustic show at Lou's.

um, this happened at Mike's Movies & Music in State College, PA. For that whole leg of the tour they were doing lunch-time in-stores before shows (they played the one here the same day they played Pittsburgh at night).

Like any ILXor will ever see the same show I will.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god I totaly listened to group sounds on my headphones all over town for like two weeks straight when I bought it. I had to stop because I honestly feared for my hearing. It's such a good record. I saw them on Cape Cod at one of the first Warped Tours. They played the smaller of the stages and totally blew the place away in the middle of a scorching afternoon. There was hay flying everywhere and dancing and beer spilling and a really good feeling in the air. Also, didn't they beat the White Stripes to holly golightly?

danh, Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure as hell did. Not that I begrudge any means of making her more famous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dick On A Dog" is the perfect shock to the system to put on a mix for somebody you're trying to impress.

I saw RFTC twice on the Group Sounds tour in the same day. As mentioned above, one in-store performance at the Soundgarden in Baltimore and then at Fletchers that night. They're a band that really knows how to play and put all of their energry into everything they do.

I've really got to go back and pick up some of their other records (I've got RFTC and Group Sounds seems to be lost...) and I'll certainly use this thread as a guide to what to go for next.

Zac Shipley, Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Rocket From the Crypt. Scream Dracula Scream is a classic, their last one was excellent as well. Hot Snakes and Jehu are killer bands also...Reis is in too many good bands!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna fan the RFTC flames. Great singles band in the beginning. Okay debut, good sophomore album but the well ran dry pretty quick. Got reallllll shticky and i turned off pretty much after 1993. this may have been due to local phenomenon. i saw them again in 1999 and they'd pretty much confirmed that they were still doing the same old thing.

Drive Like Jehu (and RFTC) have been covered on a few other threads. Hot Snakes are good, but IMO you're really deceiving yourself if they (or RFTC) are anywhere near Jehu's caliber. Sorry!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Rocket From The Crypt KILL CBGB's, summer of 92. They played with Clawhammer. It was AWESOME. I never felt anything past Circa:Now.

gygax is OTM. It's weird to compare DLJ and RFTC..they are both so different, other than Jon Reis, they share nothing...but DLJ owns.

Paint as a Fragrance still sounds awesome to me. There was a chick in the band then. Where is she now?

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm listening to Live From Camp X Ray for the first time all the way through and it's totally making my day. What a kickass record!!

It is quite possible the opening four songs on Scream Dracula Scream are among the greatest quartets opening any record anywhere kthxbye.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

I really hated Live From Camp X-Ray the few times I listened to it, especially compared to previous superior efforts. But maybe I've got to check it out again.

And Drive Like Jehu > Rocket From the Crypt > Hot Snakes. Nothing about the Hot Snakes really grabs me, except for the occaisional song or two.

joygoat (joygoat), Saturday, 22 January 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

ned is right

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I'd say Drive Like Jehu > Hot Snakes > Rocket From The Crypt, though I like all three a lot.

Hail and farewell:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 3 September 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, damn. I guess the man needs a break. But still...

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Saturday, 3 September 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

John Reis is a quitter!

Not really, but he does look to be winding down, having disbanded Hot Snakes so recently. I guess he wants to spend more time on Swami.

Eoin O'Tuairisg (eoinot), Sunday, 4 September 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

as the Casbah holds just over 200,i imagine the tickets will go quite fast. right now i am trying to justify the $$ to myself to fly down and see the show. i would suggest it will be guaranteed amazing though.

drone/a/saur (william), Sunday, 4 September 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

John is taking an indefinite break from performing/recording music, from what I hear... (though I'm sure he might dabble in the occasional White Apes recordings, but other than that...) I can't really be too surprised. I wouldn't be surprised if this happened years ago... Given he was in Hot Snakes, RFTC, AND the Sultans, AND the lesser known side stuff.. he was probably heading toward a nervous breakdown. If this means John's sanity can remain, than I can't argue against this.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Sunday, 4 September 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

That said, in a way, Live From Camp X-Ray, while obviously dated (given the specific references in the album title alone, much less the lyrics), is a great last RFTC effort.. even though it's years old.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Sunday, 4 September 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Well, the live album that's out is awesome. Lots of old songs on it. Would like to see the dvd, so I guess i'll be ordering it.
I fell away from the band after Group Sounds. I need to pick that stuff up too.

50.bison (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 October 2010 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

In my Not Just the Ticket series I'm going to get talking about the first KROQ Weenie Roast in 1993, which is when I first saw Rocket doing a Circa: Now set thanks to "Hippy Dippy Do" getting some airplay. I will forever remember Speedo on the Irvine Meadows stage, looking back at the huge screen that was then showing some video of hot dogs cooking, and saying in his inimitable rasp "I don't know about you but those things look pretty foul!"

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 October 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

haha awesome, love this band....took me way too long to investigate other albums than scream dracula scream

50.bison (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 October 2010 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

kinda weird you can barely hear the horns on this record until the very end of "glazed" the last song

50.bison (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 4 October 2010 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

hearing 2 Rocket From The Crypt songs on last night's episode of Rubicon really got me remembering how awesome this band is. i loved RFTC and Group Sounds when I'd borrow them from my brother (who posted on this thread, during a brief period when I succeeded in getting him interested in ilx!), always meant to check out the earlier albums.

PS: We are not playing the Indio Date Festival

Q: Will there be other shows?
A: Maybe. We will see how it goes
Q: If I have a Rocket tattoo can I get in free?
A: Yes, but only those with the new "reborn again" logo. This new logo consists of a purple phallus relieving itself on 3 rolled tacos with guacamole.
Q: Can i shake Speedo's hand?
A: Of course, but please bring hand sanitizer and have your camera focused and ready so that others can have an opportunity as well.
Q: I have a band that wants to play with you guys. Is this possible?
A: Possibly. If you have 2 Marshall JCM 800 half stacks, a decent bass amp and you don't mind us making pee pee on your equipment and you playing for free yes, perhaps we can work something out.
Q: This isn't really a question….but that sounds like a bad deal
A: You obviously do not know the value of exposure.
Q: My friend Chris doesn't really like your band, but he is my ride. What should I do?
A: Fuck you, Chris
Q: I have final exams that week and I won't be able to attend.
A: Good for you
Q: Why are you playing again? Are you broke or something?
A: I just want to make people happy, if only for an hour or two
Q: Are there plans for a new RFTC record?
A: Yes, Dave Grohl from Nirvana is producing.
Q: Any last words?
A: Rock N Roll will never die. It can only live. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all very soon.

The whole thing with the tattoo was always up to the venue as well, and the band had to make that clear plenty of times over the years, so it's not too surprising.

A San Diego report:

Other unscripted comments included a reference to why the band's first reunion tour will take place in the United Kingdom (the money is greater) and a five-minute diatribe during the bass-and-drums breakdown of "Come See, Come Saw" in which the singer riffed on a Danzig VHS video and how "the groove" had entered him, O'Beirne and O'Beirne's neighbor's dog.

I didn't go, cause I'm broke, but a group of people I know all chipped in for a party bus from North Park to Del Mar for the show at the racetrack last weekend. Apparently they all had a very nice time, which I saw on Facebook, cause I didn't go, cause I'm broke.

Anyway, they should do the honorable thing and record another album. I won't buy it, cause I'm broke, but I'll most certainly give it a listen on the Spotify!

del griffith, Monday, 9 September 2013 01:15 (twelve years ago)

Two vivid RFTC memories: Not being able to get into a sold-out show at the Casbah in the mid-'90s, but listening to them over the wall anyway; and them BLAZING at First Avenue circa Circa Now. One of the great live bands.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 9 September 2013 01:54 (twelve years ago)

they were so great last nite-- it was like they never went away

speedo kept calling chicago "the windy city" but pronouncing it like "wind a clock", it was so fucking funny. he briefly mentioned the show they played with wesley willis too.

they closed with a long drawn out version of come see come saw during which he instructed the while audience to turn around and give the person standing behind them a shoulder rub, and most people did!

show was sold out, glad i went because the weather looks terrible today for an outdoor festival

my only complaint is they didn't play anything from state of the art or hot charity (my favorite period)

set list:

Dollar
Don't Darlene
Straight American Slave
Carne Voodoo
I'm Not Invisible
Get Down
Sturdy Wrist
When in Rome

one year passes...

on a whim i dropped the much maligned 'live at camp x-ray' on the system.
despite the lack of love, it connects with my love of nu-era garage rock-n-roll.
so, i do the usual amazon search.
3 albums (on cd of course) : £7.50 (incl. postage).
f*ck a download.

the songs they did from camp x-ray when i saw them live 2 years ago were some of the best parts of a great set, i had forgotten about that album almost entirely, but its just as great as the rest of their catalog
