S/D: Beach Boys Covers

inspired in part by the smiling pets compilation, as well as digging out my copy of the first frank black album as a 'walking to campus' soundtrack. i dug through the archives and noticed that no one has done this yet, so figured it'd be a decent 'i've been lurking too long to not post!' post.

therefore--what, if any, beach boys covers are worth tracking down?

Not strictly Beach Boys but Primal Scream covering Dennis Wilson's lost treasure Carry Me Home, with Weatherall at the controls, is one of the best things you'll ever hear.

Proper space junkie blues.

(its on the dixie-narco ep if you want to find it)

Yeah, that "Carry Me Home" cover is good.

Also the Telescopes' "Never Learn Not To Love."

M Specktor, Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

right, yeah, forget 'Hey Hey Helen', it is ABBA.

I meant 'Fallin' In Love', which Lush do on the next EP. whoops.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Melody Dog, "Don't Worry Baby," and all the BB covers on the Langley Schools Music Project CD.

mike a, Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the Telescopes' "Never Learn Not To Love."

that would be more of a charles manson cover, wouldn't it?

Heh, His Name Is Alive's "Universal Frequencies" - there is a promo track, "The Beech Boys Story" (sic), where Warn explains that he made a tape consisting entirely of "Good Vibrations" and listened to that constantly. He then decided that there needed to be more of that song (like "Batman II," he said)*, so he made "Universal Frequencies." So, it's not strictly a cover, but yeah it deserves some kind of award.

Then, going in the opposite direction (songs the Beach Boys have covered), there's this one minute fragment that is a bonus track on some CD of the BB doing "Walk on By" - they don't even remember all the lyrics and sort of hum through some parts, but good lord, it sounds amazing. Does anyone know if they recorded a full version of it? It sounds like they were just messing around in the studio.

* Batman is Warn's favorite movie.

I've heard Elvis Costello do a good version of God Only Knows live, but I don't think he's recorded it. I like Joseph Spence's 'Sloop John B', but obviously that doesn't count. The Jesus & Mary Chain did a good Surfin' USA.

Todd Rundgren's "Good Vibrations" from Faithful is so much like the original (per his intent) that it has no reason to exist, so I guess that's a D.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was always kinda impressed with accuracy of the Todd Rundgren version of Good Vibrations. Which, yeah, renders it a bit useless, but what did the BBs think of it? Anyone know?
