wall of sound dancehall project

got sent a thing from the wall of sound label a few days ago called two culture clash. the cd featured a bunch of chopped versions of tracks from tyhis project. the gist is teaming brit and US producers w. jamaican vocalists. i really don't like wall of sound on the whole and was pretty horrified when i first heard about this, but i have to say it's actually okay. i mean donovan bennet and lenky don't have anything to worry about, but it's less bad than i tought it would be. besides, who said jamaicans should only work w/ jamaicans - i'm not going to get all purist about it and was for the most part pleasantly surprised. there's a kid 606/ward 21 collab, which is excellent and jon carter is pretty impressive w/ patra. i'll be blogging at length abt this, but has anyone else heard it? thoughts?

Taken from the website:

Producers include JACQUES LU CONT, CITY HIFI, RONI SIZE, JON CARTER, DJ GREGORY, KID 606, SOULCHILD, CASSIUS, MARK RAE, WEST LONDON DEEP, SWITCH, MEKON, HOWIE B, ALBOROSIE and JUSTIN ROBERTSON.

Jamaican dancehall/ reggae/ ska vocal talent contributing to the album includes an impressive list of both classic and contemporary stars; HORACE ANDY, EARNEST RANGLIN, MISS THING, PATRA, BUJU BANTON, WARD 21, BLING DAWG, GENERAL DEGREE, CE’CILE, JUNIOR REID, SPRAGGA BENZ, BIG YOUTH, DANNY ENGLISH, TANYA STEVENS, JUNIOR MERVIN, DETERMINE, NADINE SUTHERLAND, INNOCENT KRU, PATRICK ANTHONY and BARRINGTON LEVY.

I think these things rarely work and I've certainly never heard a Jon Carter production I've liked, but the DJ Gregory one could be cool.... especially if its with Buju. On the whole though, I think the it sounds a little bit too groove armada for my liking.

the jon carter one is actually good, but then again he did used to work in a reggae studio and knows his shit re dancehall better than most - as i said it's abt 10 minutes of music, maximum so i can't make a proper judgement other than the fact that i really like the ward 21/kid 606 one

Jon Carter used to work in a reggae studio? In london? Did he? Doing what? Just interested.

I remember one of his first things as monkey mafia, work mi body, was pretty dancehall, also I read something about him smoking in Jamaica with Buju which surprised me. Maybe I'm not giving him a fair trial!

In fairness Carter's always had a dancehall influence, he loves that kind of thing, at his best as a house DJ he'd often play ragga accapellas and things. Shame he's gone making shite tribal prog lately.

For Jon Carter et dancehall, search Monkey Mafia feat. Patra - 'Work Mi Body', Monkey Mafia - 'Lion In The Hall' and Live At The Social Vol. 2 - Jon Carter (mix CD).

Mekon feat Evil D - 'Welcome To Tackletown' and the early 90s dancehall influence on the (underrated classic) album of the same name gives me hope for his contribution (Jon Carter features on 'Mekon vs Artery' aka 'Painiac').

Yeah have all of the above except the Mekon, wicked stuff.

His Live 7 mix, my old favourite has traces of the dancehall element, like what the Jaxx might sound like if they DJed.

Get Mekon, Ro!

Dave is kinda right, dancehall being done by these guys -

CITY HIFI, DJ GREGORY, SOULCHILD, MARK RAE, WEST LONDON DEEP, SWITCH, HOWIE B

- doesn't fill me with utmost confidence.

I think Gregory could do it.

Jacques Lu Cont???

Jacques Lu Cont featuring Elephant Man-Girls Dem Dress For Airport Suites

Re: Switch, 'Get Ur Dub On' is OK but the Chemicals remix they did was average. Jacques is a way 'interesting' choice, 'What's That Sound?' could make a great dancehall track tho'. Maybe his track sounds like old Mekon.

Switch have apparently done some banging remixes, I forget which ones though : (

well, from what i've heard it's at it's best when the producers aren't trying to be dancehall at all as per 606 and cassius
