I just did a full marathon of all the Studio One comps over the last week... as well as all six N00% Dynamite comps. I'm glad at least some of this is now branded in my brain, which was part of the exercise.
If there was only one you had to choose to buy, I'd choose the CD/DVD Studio One Story, as it is the single most solid compilation of tracks of all of them.. Sure, it's the most expensive, but you also get the DVD which, while hard to watch all the way through because of its length and over use of the frame and banner, contains a lot of footage that can never be filmed again... namely Sir Coxsone being interviewed. :(
Many of the other Studio One comps are good, but many are more misses than hits.. after the Funk comp, the releases start hitting a dry spell.. until the most recent one, Women, which is mostly great! I hope this is a sign of an upswing in up and coming Studio One comps, if more are planned.

I think Rockers is easily the best of the original series. I haven't bothered with 'Lovers' and 'Roots 2', but I really enjoyed 'Funk' (worth it for Price Moonie's 'See A Man's Face'. Discomix is fun, but not essential - too many syn-drum workouts for me.
I'll have to get Women now I think.

Soul 2 is coming out next week! I liked Soul quite a bit and hope this isn't just the leftovers.

Developing an obsession with Studio One is not the way to do this, as I have found out from bitter experience.

Realizing I will never be able to afford even VG copies of the LPs in the Dub Specialist series, I've been trying to collect various tracks on comps. I have the necessary volumes on Soul Jazz, but can anyone tell me about this?
https://www.amazon.com/Dub-Specialist-Studio-Specialists-2000-03-01/dp/B014I5Z8K4/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=dub+specialist+17&qid=1612969214&sr=8-1
It looks to have many crucial cuts, but the amg review has me hesitating:
What makes it interesting is that the dubs themselves are not period pieces -- they are modern realizations by an engineer coyly identified only as the Dub Specialist (whom one is tempted to identify as Heartbeat label head Chris Wilson). Whoever it is, he doesn't have quite the same genius as that which animated the best dub artists of the 1970s; where King Tubby or Augustus Pablo would have made artful use of drop-out, delay, and echoing cross-rhythms, whoever was at the board for these mixes satisfied himself mainly with the random imposition of echo.
Confusing because "Dub Specialist" was a name used by several engineers at the time, including iirc Scientist and Clement Todd himself. Is the reviewer mistaken or is this something I should pass on? "Modern realizations," if true, is a definite red flag.
