Can anyone out there recommend any good Electronica for jaded ears, the last one i enjoyed was Four Tet's futuristichorticulturism!

Russell Dixon (Skinny), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ooooohh... any electronica?

I was going to start 100 best electronica albums today and then i forgot to.

I've been pretty behind on it myself considering I was a Warp fanatic only a couple of years ago. It's when it all started splitting off into glitch and microhouse that i got put off.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think fourtet is electronica?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

what is it then? metal?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Electronica is rather, er, broad... you looking for Four Tet-type stuff? Beats and melodies?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Laptronica. Folktronica. He uses a laptop and samples and real instruments - 'electronica' is a good catch-all term, I'd say. Certainly better than any of the shite, too=specific neologisms, or 'IDM'.

Anyway. I'd make a list seeing as I love Four Tet, but my mind's a blank. Look into Manitoba's last album.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah, surprise surprise, Nick & Mark both pop up on a Four Tet thread within seconds.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

fourtet is mostly acoustic sounds and samples. electronica makes me think of the chemical brothers.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

SN totally and utterly OTM.

Imagine all that in a tent in one evening.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Telefon Tel Aviv's first album (Fahrenheit Fair Enough) is gold.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ulrich Schnauss is my favorite new electronic artist in ages. Real melodic stuff with HOOKS... if Boards were less into glitch and hip hop and more into OMD perhaps?

Also, Colleen on Leaf... the loop manipulation is stunning.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how much the difficulty of talking about this stuff (b/c no one has come up w/ widely accepted genre labels) has held it back. We've been going back and forth about what to call this music for years.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the finest electronic albums of 2004:

Claro Intelecto - Neurofibro

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like Four Tet, you should check out 310. "After All", their latest LP, is their most accessible and trip-hoppy work. Their previous LPs are more experimental/ambient, but great anyway. 310 have an uncanny ability to produce music that's both abstract and emotional, melancholic soundscapes with kicking beats.

While possessing not even a tenuous connection to electronica, The Books are likely to appeal to most fans of what is being discussed here, whatever that may be.

minolta (minolta), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

fourtet is more like the books than electronica.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Via Boomkat, I recently discovered Xela. I think his "For Frosty Mornings and Summer Nights" was one of their faves of 2003, and it is very lovely. There's a more recent album called "Tangled Wool" but I think I prefer FFMaSN.

The recent Remote Viewer album is nice too.

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You know about Funckarma?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the new remote viewer makes it sound like they've been listening to mum.
random numbers 'towards the forlorn society', another great hood side project.
when's the next hood album come out then?

Hans Appelqvist is sometimes trespassing Four Tets territory. Sometimes not. But if you're into this kind of "folktronica" or whateveryoucallit, you have to check it out now.

Did anybody else get the Starving But Happier! compilation? Brilliant Four-Tet-like indietronica, featuring Wixel, Hans Appleqvist, Calamarshape Superashtray, Flim and loads of other artists worthy of yr attention. I was gonna link it, but it looks like it's been taken down.
