Cabaret Voltaire hands down, no contest

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a good question since I just got the 23 Skidoo singles comp the other day, and it's pretty damned great through and through. But that's one comp versus the slew of grandness CV did, so...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind you I haven't listened to either in years but hearing the opening track on Lee Perry's "Revolution Dub" got me thinking about the Cabs again.

Sex in Secret

Russell Dixon (Skinny), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What about a certain Ratio? are they worth checkin' out?

Russell Dixon (Skinny), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm more down with the DaDa boys methinks. i used to have 7 songs on vinyl, and the last album .. but neither really got under my skin in the same way that Sensoria 12" version completely changed my life. my vite : Cab Voltiare.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

both equally with the tie breaker being 23 skidoo's 'the gospel comes to new guinea' produced by cabaret voltaire.

stirmonster, Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

23 Skidoo definitely. Coup/Tearing Up The Plans/Another Baby's Face/Last Words/Ethics/Assassin/Vegas El Bandito all totally classic. CV have not aged well - NNN is obv ace as is some of the stuff circa Mix Up, but there was much dullness in the 80's. Only the odd gem like Sensoria & Yashar (Factory version)really cut through. I do have a soft spot for the Code LP though.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Code storms the woofers. adrian sherwood meets CV. a perfect result for me .. for many others though tis not a good album. and despite it being cr*p i wish i hadn't got rid of cd copy of Groovy Laidback and Nasty .. tis rare as f*ck these days ..

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

skidoo. if you subtract that last record.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

even at their weediest "we are bahaus crossed with shannon" period, cv urinate on skidoo from great heights (they are not bad though).

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i already take that back

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

They are both pretty great. CV released better singles and was better longer, but I definitely listen to 23 Skidoo's albums more.

TS: "Coup" vs. "Yashir" is impossible.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Skidoo were better and worse than the Cabs.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the cabs are a bit constipated rhythmically i think. plus all that dark and doomy industrial culture stuff is a bit huff huff. i love 'em still but...

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

back with another one of those block rockin' beats!

etc, Friday, 7 May 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really get the coup love. i like the huge crashing sounds though. i've cleared dancefloors with it.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I have much love for CV *and* 23 Skidoo. Even Skidoo's last album has some sweet tracks. But I may take Richard H Kirk's solo output over both.

c'mon, they were all friends. They'd sit around with Eric Random, Clock DVA and They Must Be Russians and discuss brainwashing over tea. Can't we all get along? How'd I miss this thread?

Totally not understanding Dave's Crackdown dislike. Great record, especially the Dave Ball assisted Animation and Diskono from the 12" that came with it.

As far as Cabaret Voltaire not aging as well, I don't think it's their fault, I think, specifically, the use of soundbytes dates them more then anything else, but like the rest of their sound, it seems dated just because it became so pervasive. I almost hate the Cabs due to all those crappy EBM and "industrial" bands that came after.

Anyway, both of them had a problem with songwriting. They were masters of sound, of rhythm, totally innovative, but even the Cabs best most catchy pop stuff was quite simple. So many of the songs are like, ok, this is the sound/groove, let's just rock it for 8 minutes. Sometimes the repetition annoys me and I want something to happen, other times the repetition is the point and the dynamics within make for something intense and beautiful, he says as he's 9 minutes into "A Thousand Ways"

Shite! I can't decide between the two...I love them both... Actually, I'll go for 23 Skidoo, as most of their records sound like they were recorded yesterday (not to mention that I listen to them more) and sound more fresh and ambient. Seven Songs is creepy as hell on headphones at 4AM...I went completely paranoid going on walks while listening to it. I wish I could get a DVD version of the video for that record...I saw it available once on eBay and lost the bid because I was at school, useless institution that it is.

CV have the perfect moment of Nag Nag Nag, the brute industrial landmark that is 'Live at the YMCA' and the memory of the Crackdown tour - twenty years on, I've yet to see a better live multimedia show.

23 who?

Soukesian, Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago)

the noize locked groove on culling slays me every time. also i just listened to Cvs Covenant etc lp last week and holy fuvk it is great.

anyone recommend any of the ronin stuff?

bulbs (bulbs), Sunday, 28 November 2004 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, I have a soft spot in my heart for Code, too. Because of this thread I feel the need to hear it. I haven't heard a whole lot of 23 Skidoo but I've never heard a single track by them that meant as much to me as the Cabs did. But I am open to the idea that they might not have aged so well. I used to pull them out every few years quite regularly but haven't felt the need in quite some time. I mean, I'm overdue for a Cabs trip but I'm not really missing them. It's strange.

Bimble (bimble), Sunday, 28 November 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

23 skidoo's tracks aren't that great, but the albums are. you know?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 28 November 2004 09:30 (twenty years ago)

c'mon, they were all friends. They'd sit around with Eric Random, Clock DVA and They Must Be Russians and discuss brainwashing over tea.

Yeah, well sitting around and discussing the political antics of TG and Crass and Oi! may do that. Where's John Eden!!??
