Reporting from Brooklyn, the results from my favorite cultural barometer:

Jet - "This song will sell some fuckin' ipods!"
Darkness - "I believe in a Thing Called Love"
T Rex - "Bang a Gong"

Maroon 5 - This Love

mo' money, mo' problems

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Grand Funk Railroad's "Some Kind of Wonderful," coming out of an unmarked white van that I'm guessing belonged to some sort of contractor, plumber, electrician, etc.

Lee G (Lee G), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

huh, what part of Brooklyn were you in?

The other night, in Williamsburg, Usher's "Yeah."

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Sweet Home Alabama"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Unidentifiable ethnic techno coming out of a car service car, Soho, NY.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

huh, what part of Brooklyn were you in?

North 8th Street -- I noticed a gradual switch from Hot97's "blazin' hip hop & R&B" to Scorpions beginning about five years ago. It's mostly Polish teens and working stiffs, cuz hipsters don't drive.

All time biggest 5-borough jeep jam remains: Mr. Vegas - "Heads High." Hands down!

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

in Seattle, it's either handbag house music, jungle/drum-n-bass, heavy classic rock, or Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer".

One thing i remember about my last visit in San Francisco that really set it apart from other cities is how many people will ride through the streets blasting early Ornette Coleman, Coltrane, or Miles Davis in their stereos.. at blisteringly loud volumes.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 6 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've noticed that when I'm chillin' on Nassau Avenue, most of the Polish teens play said "ethnic techno."

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

man i NEVER hear rock coming out of cars these days.. its just the norm around here to bump to booty-rap..

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ornette Coleman on the motorway?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Here are the large cities with the best rates, along with their average annual pedestrian fatalities for the period:

*        No. 1: Seattle, Wash.: Rate 1.01 (Fatalities: 6)

The large cities with the highest pedestrian fatality rates were:

*        No. 4: San Francisco, Calif.: Rate 3.82 (Fatalities 30)

Stick with the handbag house...

One thing I always love is when a totally buffed-out tough guy will pull up in a flashy sports car, totally full-crank blasting the absolute sissiest dance music possible -- like check me out, ladies!

sexyDancer, Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly enough, "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann....BLASTING down my street at about 4am.´

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just heard/saw a big fat white dude, mid 30's...banging SLICK RICK.

New Jersey Plates!

ddb, Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

some dancehall thing i didn't recognize. probably the same dude that was blasting sean paul's album every day a couple of months ago.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to find a thread the other day on blaring music from your car, classic or dud, but I didn't find it. Has this been done? It's divisive, I am sure, but I personally find it to be an unmitigated classic.

Donut, you hear drum n bass coming out of people's cars in Seattle? I don't think I have heard that. Definitely lots of classic rock though, and a pretty fair amount of hip hop. Lots of KUBE and KISW.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sugababes "Hole in the Head" Wait, was that my car?

kattt, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's May, and that means that Norway is full of cars playing crap like Scooter as loud as possible, so you can hear them coming from blocks away.
Fill up a small town with a bunch of these cars, and you have quite the stereophonic experience of thumpa-beats.

Perhaps I should record it one day and create an exciting new genre of madly syncopated early-90s technobeat pastiches.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

this wasnt the last time, but one time i was standing on the sidewalk and this guy on a motorcycle came by fairly slowly blasting "sex machine." it made me smile.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob Seger - "Old Records Off the Shelf," Union Square NYC. Notable for one reason: it's the signature song of the Garfield movie coming out in four short weeks.

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Baby Boy"

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

My music usually overpowers music from all other cars, so I don't recall. But about four hours ago I was playing ANdre Nickatina while turning and this grinning idiot of a bicyclist blows his stop sign and I swerve and SCRAPE MY BRAND NEW FUCKING RIM. There's a six-inch deep gash in the edge of my rim - oh MAN I want to run that guy's kneecaps over and over and over till they're fucking JELLY, son, and even if I killed him the price of his life on earth wouldn't make up for my rim.

LC, Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, sorry, I meant six-inch WIDE gash. The anger is jumbling my synapses.

LC, Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

The Police - "Roxanne"
Yesterday, on Kingston Pike.
Initially thought first note was a baby crying.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Last week I was at a red light w/ my window down next to a guy who was skipping through Tha Carter III, then stopped on "Phone Home." I almost turned to him and gave him a look, like "that's the song you wanna hear? christ, just put it on track 10 for me until this light changes, OK?"

some dude, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

I heard "Closer To the Heart" (Rush) coming from a parked car w/hatch opened last weekend. It was parked just outisde the entrance to the beer store. (Dude!)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

I just got back from grabbing a breakfast sandwich downtown & a car drove by jamming some Kraftwerk, which I thought was very awesome.

myndbloom, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)
