THESE CELEBS HONOR THE FIRE!
1. Kate Bush - I've noted on ILX a bajillion times that Ms.Bush once exclaimed that that last time she openly wept was when she'd heard that Killing Joke had broken up (which they've done more times than you've had hot dinners). Closer scrutiny reveals that Kate put her money where her mouth was by employing erstwhile Joke bass player Youth to whack at the four thick strings on her seizmicly gorgeous Hounds of Love album. Cheers, Kate!!!
2. Neil Finn - Kiwi singer/songwriter gent and driving force behind late-era Split Enz and the plangently pleasant Crowded House. Not the sort've type you'd expect to be a fan of the black-hearted apcalypso of the Joke that Kills, but alas YEA! Not only did Finn recruit Youth to produce their 1993 album, Together Alone, but while Youth was down twiddling their knobs in Crowded House's native New Zealand, Finn proved to be the lynchpin in goading Jaz Coleman (who'd since relocated to New Zealand himself) to patch things up with Youth and actually record with the band again (Youth had flown the coop after Revelations). The end result was 1994 barnstorming Pandemonium album. Salut, Neilo!
3. Nikki Sixx - Though the hirsute Motley Crue bass player almost personifies the fatuous rockstar excesses, cliches and ludicrous banalities that Killing Joke are diametrically opposed to, Sixx is purportedly a massive fan of all things Joke (and even swiped the middle-eight of the Joke's "Love Like Blood" for the intro to "Dr.Feelgood"). Beyond that bit of pilferage, Sixx even recorded a ham-fisted cyberfunk track dubbed "Killing Joke" for his ill-fated 2000 side-project named 58. He's also apparently buddy-buddy with the Joke's other bass player, Raven.
Which unlikely supporters fly the flag for your fave artist?

michael mcdonald - august 9th, uncasville, CT
i got there a lot later than i wanted to. the show was at the mohegan sun indian casino, and it was free. "first come, first served" as they say. when i got there, i was like 400th in line, and wondered if i'd even get inside or not. they sit 6 people at every table. since i was by myself, there was a table in the front row that had only 5 people in it, so, they sat me there. it was awesome, i was about 5 feet from michael mcdonald! i sat next to 2 groups of people. one guy (with some broad), claiming he was danny devito (but he wasn't short enough or funny enough to be him), and a group of 3 nice "housewife" types. they asked me before the show what my 3 "desert island" cd's would be, and being an asshole, i said, "how would you be able to play cd's on a desert island with no electricity?". they later, between themselves, asked each other who the 3 guys they could be stranded on a desert island would be (with no surprise, no husbands of theirs were mentioned), one of them said "mel gibson (generically understandable), billy joel (!!!!!), and michael mcdonald(!!!!!!!!!!). it made no sense to me at all. so, back to michael mcdonald, he was on tour promoting his new cd of motown covers. i didn't care what he was going to sing. his voice is so awesome, he could even sing hatebreed or limp bizkit songs, and i'd think he was awesome. he sounded unbelievable! he did some doobie brothers songs, some of his solo songs, and some motown ones (stuff from marvin GAYe, stevie wonder, etc). he sounded better than i expected. he has easily one of the most unique gay voices ever. his band was really good as well, they were all from other bands that i never heard of, but, supposedly, they're well known musicains. by the end of the set, he did "taking it to the streets", and a whole bunch of civilized middle aged people rushed the stage. he totally fucking kicked ass all night. i highly recommend seeing him.

I read in EW that the was the basis for Hey Ya, which does sound like something the Buzzcocks could've done. Maybe not lyrically, but the retro-60's vibe to it is there.

And as mentioned above Axl Rose was a huge PSB fan, November rain was his (miserable) attempt to write a PSB style song.

(BTW, not exactly "fan"-related, but a band-related article that's surprising in its content and focus.)
Okay, so David Bedingfield (and The Bravery, but they don't fit this thread's requirements) have both been tapped (and have accepted the invite) to be Duran's openers when My Favorite West Midlanders play on their home turf at St. Andrew's football grounds on May 28. Hello? (I'm wondering if this counts, BTW. I won't know officially if this means he's a fan for awhile.)
New famous Duran fan addition (might not be surprising): Christina Applegate Was seen praising the band after an L.A. concert date in July 2003.
I have also come to find out that Deftones ARE real Duran fans and not the opportunists I marked them out to be when they participated in that weird ska/punk Duran tribute album in '97. So HUGE pats on the backs of those guys.
Oh! And did you know that Neil Gaiman wrote a bio on DD back in the early '80s? It's something he kinda likes to keep secret, though he's stopped short of completely ripping on the band.
I don't know if she was necessarily a fan or not, but apparently Allison Anders has this thing for John Taylor; it's why he scored Mi Vida Loca and co-starred in Sugar Town. Also, some of Cheap Trick attended one of JT's birthday parties; this could just be because they're pals, though. (OT: I like Cheap Trick. They certainly have nothing to be embarrassed about.)
Scissor Sisters were apparently quite happy to open for Duran during their 25th anniversary (of existence, not of recording) gigs in the UK back in 2003. You can even see Ana Matronic raving on about the experience in the special DVD attached to the "limited edition" Astronaut release.
I think Elisabeth from the second (?) "Survivor" (the one who's now on "The View") was interviewed about her musical tastes ca. the time period when she was appearing on "Survivor" and she mentioned being into DD. (This could be surprising considering how young she is... but then again, look at me. *laughs* I'm younger than she is by a few years!)
