Actually, no it's not

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

name one better song.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fascists Eat Donuts" by the Pop-O-Piess

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"better", alex.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Ever hear it ?é

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i had just assumed you were making it up.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, it's on the White e.p....still sadly vinyl only after all these years.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i won't listen to what you tell me to do, adam.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Sum 41 suck ass.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Correction, they suck Paris Hilton ass.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but that doesn't make them unique l

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha you detractors are not doing yourselves many favors with this livejournal-level takedown here

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"no, YOU shut up, strongo"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

STRONGO HULKINGTON LAST FIVE YEARS ROCK TOP 10:

SUM 41 - "FAT LIP"
BLINK-182 - "DAMMIT"
M.O.P. - "ANTE UP"
BUSTED - "CRASH & BURN"
WHEATUS - "TEENAGE DIRTBAG"
BLACK DICE - "CONE TOASTER"
GIRLS ALOUD - THAT "YOU FREAK ME OUT" SONG
LIL JON - "PUT YO HOOD UP"
JUNIOR SENIOR - "SHAKE YOUR COCONUTS (ANIMAL COLLECTIVE REMIX)"
EMINEM - "CLEANIN OUT MY CLOSET"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There is precious little "rock" to be found on yonder list

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't fuck with billy danze alex

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sum 41 have never ever ever been able to write a decent hook. The closest they came was "In Too Deep," but that's still a pretty shit song. I think Blink-182 was the last pop-punk band to give a shit about the songwriting.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Sum 41 is great and I love this song. "Cleanin' Out My Closet" is the only bad song on that list.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i kinda blanked out there

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

if i had to take sides between sum and blink it would be sum all the way. at least sum hasn't assaulted me with shitty attempts at emo.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew WK, "She Is Beautiful"

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Toxic" is a better song! You can't deny it, I know you won't! Don't lie!!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(this is not my opinion, but I think I know jess' achilles heel)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

A better rock song?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

actually andrew wk "i get wet" might be better than all three of them

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The question posed at the top of the thread was to name one better song -- genre unspecified.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hmm, we've got to appeal to those Linkin Park kids. Throw some rap in there."

"Oh curses, now it's too heavy. Put in a little emo section before that to even it up."

Sansai, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

alright I'm just gonna let "Fat Lip" go (cuz its pretty good) and note that Jess is having a full-on wack attack with "Cleanin' Out My Closet" and ESPECIALLY "Teenage Dirtbag."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Blink-182 was the last pop-punk band to give a shit about the songwriting.

Good Charlotte, you rinky dinks. Good Charlotte.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

not to mention the All-American Rejects

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha nb: i hate "cleanin out my closet")

("teenage dirtbag" is beautiful, however)

(miccio i thought at least YOU would have my back on this one)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Good Charlotte, you rinky dinks. Good Charlotte."

It was "give a shit about songwriting", Anthony, not "give a shit about the wholesale theft of other people's songwriting."

Sansai, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry that Wheatus guy's voice is pretty fucking intolerable. it's also a painfully slow track.

But "Fat Lip" is definitely better than Sum-41's other shit. There's just been A LOT more good rock than what you're describing there.
"Dammit" was a good call though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It was "give a shit about songwriting", Anthony, not "give a shit about the wholesale theft of other people's songwriting."

well I guess we can cancel out the Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Beatles and Beach Boys there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

well I guess we can cancel out the Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Beatles and Beach Boys there.

-- Anthony Miccio (anthonymicci...), May 7th, 2004.

Touche. Nonetheless, they managed to do it without decreasing the quality of the lifted material immensely through the arrangement/performance/production, but hey isn't that all subjective now.

Sansai, Friday, 7 May 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite Wheatus memory is when my old supervisor at work asked me who does the song about a "Teenage Dirtbag" and I had no idea. Saw the video and said it was some group of ugly guys named Wheatus. She said "what? a guy? It totally sounded like it was a bitch!"

And this wasn't a woman quick to throw in that noun.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind "Teenage Dirtbag", actually .

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Charlotte, you rinky dinks. Good Charlotte.

B-b-b-b-but Good Charlotte ARE rinky dinks, Anthony b

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's because you like the absurd fantasy that a woman would have tickets to Iron Maiden.

(x-post)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

who WOULDNT like that fantasy?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess just won himself a big-ass beer

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i can understand all aesthetic arguments against "teenage dirtbag" really, but criticizing the narrative seems like trying to disavow who we all were at 14.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Now if she had tickets to a GOOD heavy metal band it'd be a whole 'nuther matter entirely.

Dude at 14 I was totally alt-rockin' it. She'd have to have REM tickets.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i was just about to say: you can change the lyrics to "he drives a hummer" and "tickets to chingy" and the basic thrust remains the same

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Now if she had tickets to a GOOD heavy metal band it'd be a whole 'nuther matter entirely.

YOU. DIE. NOW.

Dude at 14 I was totally alt-rockin' it.

That's `cos you're too young.

She'd have to have REM tickets.

Then she wouldn't be a dirtbag. Self-respecting dirtbags don't listen to REM `

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry the guy sings like a bitch and it's painfully slow and annoying. I guess I wasn't a teenage dirtbag at 14 after all. my loss. next.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it's painfully slow and annoying.

Iron Maiden are painfully slow and annoying? Have you ever heard Iron Maiden??

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm talking about "Teenage Dirtbag," Alex.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

*wonders why this thread is so huge, clicks on it*

Oh right.

*leaves again*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"She's On It Pt. 2"

-- Chris Ott (ot...), May 7th, 2004. (later)

Oh come now, Ott....let's not overdo it.

Coincidentally, I bizarrely just saw Adrock chatting on a cellphone on 15th street between 5th and 6th avenues. No, I didn't say anything.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually do like "What's Up Fatlip" more than "Fat Lip," though

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fat Lip" SUCKS. It's almost like they went for an "Licensed to Ill" Beastie Boys vibe, with shitty pop-punk undertones, only failed to achieve the charm or fun at all. Plus not to mention the chief melody/guitar part in the song is really lame.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"SUM 41 - "FAT LIP"

ew.

"BLINK-182 - "DAMMIT"

ew.

"WHEATUS - "TEENAGE DIRTBAG"

haha, come on, man.

LIL JON - "PUT YO HOOD UP"
EMINEM - "CLEANIN OUT MY CLOSET"

Since when were these rock songs?

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Uh is coming dangerously close to becoming the voice of reason.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with uh as it pertains to the ew's.
Sum 41 seem like they would be fun to get drunk and fuck shit up with.
Correction : It would be fun to get drunk and fuck *them* up.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It amazes me that kids slam dance to such cheesy music today. I'd rather usurp the radio and throw some Rudimentary Peni "Psycho Squat" on and swallow them whole.

Some kid told me when I was 16 once that Blink 182's "Dammit" was music he liked to break stuff too. I suggested the stereo be first.

Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, American Head Charge, the group that did the song "My Friends Over You", fuck em all.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Some kid told me when I was 16 once that Blink 182's "Dammit" was music he liked to break stuff too. I suggested the stereo be first.

Uh has gone from being the voice of reason to becoming the voice inside my head. Time for another beer, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the funny thing is, on the cd we have to play over the loudspeakers at work, with "new hit songs" on it, the new Blink 182 is described in a manner by the really terrible DJ on the cd as if their new album is fucking "Pet Sounds" just because they slowed down their songs to midtempo and quit making so many jokes about taking off pants.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Five minutes until Alex and uh start making out.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

and the thread comes to a screeching halt. :)

I do like SOME pop-punk...I am a huge fan of Bad Religion, but I don't even think we can attach the "punk" label to some of the shit. Blink 182 sure isn't. they're a pop band through and through.

I think the coolest song on mainstream rock radio (might get some disagreements here) in the last year or two was Queen of the sTone Age's "No One Knows"

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

New Found Glory is actually the group that did "My Friends Over You" and they are complete horseshit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

...yet you like Good Charlotte.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

...as if there's a difference.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Songs that make Sum 41 and Blink 182 sound like diarrhea:

(make this an add on list)

1. Black Flag--Damaged I

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

does anybody here like Leatherface? I thought "Mush" and "Cherry Knowle" were quality pop-punk albums

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a difference, Alex. Stronger, catchier melodies. Better, more empathetic lyrics. More interesting production. Tighter performances. Granted, if all you do is LOOK at the group and get your panties in a knot over the fact that some kid DARE wear a mohawk on TRL, you wouldn't catch this.

Leatherface is pretty cool.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

All these bands should write the Dickies one big huge fucking check and then collectively retire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I side with Alex on this one. They don't sound much different to me at all.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I first had to hear Good Charlotte on the Madden 2004 soundtrack. There was a reason I turned all the music off on that game. only the Andrew WK tracks stayed on, if that.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a difference, Alex.

Not too much of one.

Stronger, catchier melodies.

Than New Found GLory? Okay, I'll give you that one.

Better, more empathetic lyrics.

Nope, not giving any ground on that one. Granted, you are more versed in GC's lyrical oeuvre than I, but if the lyrics to "Anthem", "Girls & Boys" and "Lifestyles..." are anything to go on, my fuckin' ten year old nephew (who loves them, wouldn't ya know) could come up with much better.

More interesting production.

I don't hear it, but you might be right.

Tighter performances.

Oh, you mean their choreographed group windmill jumps are better timed?

Granted, if all you do is LOOK at the group and get your panties in a knot over the fact that some kid DARE wear a mohawk on TRL, you wouldn't catch this.

That any of these bands have the audacity to refer to themselves as Punk and even appear on TRL -- tonsorial shenanigans notwithstanding -- renders them fit for extermination.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, i thought you were leaving and wanted all your posts deleted?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(Jess -- check the Poison thread please, things are calmer now.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, I reconciled with Ned, and I think the fact that I've behaved the last two days stands up to close scrutiny. Do I have backup on this? :)

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

special props to Ned for handling the situation properly.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

foiled again.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, thank John D. if anyone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think half the "pop" bands masquerading as punk on MTV can be considered the same category as this:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000268G.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

well, obvious props to John. he stuck his neck out for me.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, i just figured out who uh is.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Some book called "Sonic Cool"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(Er, so who is he?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, i expect better of you!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh, I'm curious to hear who I am, too. Hopefully John Elway.

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

*checks* For a couple of reasons, I don't think you're right, Jess.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, complete sentences.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I only posted to this board like, once every two months before starting here as "uh", and that was the one-off post Oystein directed me to. I think I posted in a Darkness thread too

uh (eetface), Friday, 7 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)
