Well, there's this guy I know in Orange County.

Arthur, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate creed and moby.

chaki, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I've heard about that guy, Arthur. Absolute genius when it comes to appreciating great music, I gather!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok, I've gotta say that when I first heard them, I hated them. The songs all sound the same, the lyrics are the worst, and the singer's skills are, well, limited. But for some reason they're really growing on me. "Black Market Music" has a bunch of riffs that I just can't get out of my head, and yesterday I bought a used copy of "Without You I'm Nothing", which features the dreaded "Pure Morning", quoted above. It's not as good as the new one, and I do have a little embarassment listening to it knowing the do kind of suck, but I'm liking it all the same. I mean, what's next, Gary Numan??

Sean, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, hopefully.

Wait, forget that, Sean, you're supposed to go out and get Loveless! There's this guy I know in Orange County who really likes it. And you will, too. It's magnificent!

Arthur, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, yeah, that guy, Ned. I especially like how he doesn't get all SHOUTY about it. He does have that evil twin that shows up from time to time though.

Ever Placebo a friend? Are Placebo friends electric?

Arthur, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew a guy who really dug Placebo. He was also really into the Frogs too though, so I don't know. Go down to your local "Rocky Horror" theater and watch it through a couple of times, then go back and give Placebo another listen.

Dan I., Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate to admit to knowing this, but the line above is terribly misquoted. I mean, at least give the man credit for trying to be witty: "A friend in need is a friend indeed; a friend with weed is better."

Nitsuh, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i enjoy their gender fuck, it's kinkily cool.

Geoff, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're either a Placebo person or a Daphne & Celeste person. I happen to be a Daphne & Celeste-r.

Nicole, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both versions appear in the song, Nitsuh, along with other strokes of genius like "my Japanese is better." I think the "bleeds" one comes first.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nicole - daphne & celeste do indeed rule supreme and placebo are truly repulsive. it wouldn't be so bad if they had tunes or maybe lyrics worth a damn or roy orbison on vocals.

bob snoom, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Daphne and Celeste should be cool. But they're not, though I blame their producers, who have tin ears, and not them.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And as for Gary Numan -- yes, please. Go forth and BUY, Sean!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I have "Replicas". I had a couple others in junior high... don't need to relive the experience. Brace yourself for my "Loveless" review, btw.

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*shrug* You could call it filthy codswallop and I wouldn't mine, dear sir, just make your review *entertaining to read*. :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mine = mind. Oh yes.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't guarantee how entertaining it will be; I'm not one of FT's literary luminaries. It's not a hatchet job, for sure. Go see for yourself.

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*does so* A fine review. And yep, the Cocteau Twins were always an immediate reference point for me when I first heard them. :-) My friend Steve back at UCLA said the album reminded him of an antique photograph hidden behind a murky glass frame, where you can't quite tell what's there...but something is there, something interesting.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"loveless" reminds me of getting pist in my dressing gown at 10am on christmas day in the loving arms of my family ; cartoons on TV; twinkling lights & tinsel, the warm feeling of pickled onions & gherkins & peanuts for breakfast.. aaaahh.....
