Putsch 79

I can't decide if this is good or rather cheesy, pedestrian house. Or maybe both? I like "Training Montage" and I suppose "Asian Girls" is okay.

Your thoughts?

Asian Girls sounded kind of fancy or something.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd actually rather hear full-on cheese and listen to Bangkok Impact, Putsch '79 just feels insubstantial -- though I really like "Glowing Cat" and "1300" (are either of those on the album?).

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I like cheese! See the Erlend Oye thread for details! Neither of those are on the album I have.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I love cheese too, we've been through that round though.

Putsch 79, just kinda polite? Asian Girls is like pleasant, and that's about it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Glowing Cat's not on it -- that's their best track!

It's almost exactly like the Kerrier District album.

Time Space Hazmat (Andy K), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I think "polite" was the word I was looking for.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

For recent Metro Area-ish tracks I preferred the Fabrice Lig EP with "Fast Walk on Broadway" (think Gabba hosted a track a few months back). Still polite, but a bit more energy maybe...

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, am I right in thinking that you live in SF?

If so -where do you go to buy records? ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m, I wish I'd been able to track down any of the acts mentioned here, though I can't say I've spent that much effort -- slsk's a mixed blessing sometimes!

(Potrero Hill represent!)

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually placed a tentative order for both Bangkok Impact and Putsch '79 online yesterday, from PJ at S:kimo -- I'm probably depriving some local SF retailer of my hard-earned $, but much as I love Aquarius in theory their selection on this stuff is spotty...

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 7 May 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like the "Asian Girls" 12", and play several tunes off it quite a bit. Maybe I'm just a left coast PC type, but I think the lyrics are anything but "polite." In fact they're quite embarrassing...

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, yes! Well, when you put it like that. But the music itself is somewhat...traditional?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And yes, it's the 12" that I'm referring to, not an album.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think I took the lyric to be "traditional" too, as in "back when people were making music like this the first time around, this wouldn't have raised an eyebrow, so now let's look back and laugh/cringe."

Oddly, if the tune had been stronger, I probably would have objected *more*.

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 7 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, interesting point. Like I said, it's probably just vestiges of my Vassar ultra-PC years coming out. After all, I do live in SF... but really, when I do play it out I always find myself looking around and wondering if anyone is looking offended. I do think it taps into an Asianophilic racism that goes unchallenged all too often...

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I totally appreciate your trepidation, and if someone were going to storm the DJ booth in protest it'd probably be here! (Where do you play around here anyway, Philip?)

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I think that's a fair point. I can't really listen to Elephant Man's "Chiney Ting" for much the same reason.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I never even thought of the lyrics, no they're not polite I guess!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

its ok. i probably won't listen to it again, but its ok.

mullygrubber (gaz), Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Putsch 79 sounds like the name of some horrible Neo-Nazi skinhead band.
