It's the Rough Trade album of the week!

Robin, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somebody from My Bloody Valentine is on it too! Gasp!

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hope Sandoval is the duddest of live performers ever ever ever. I just haven't been able to listen to anything but the first Mazzy Star album since seeing them at Irving Plaza years ago, her mix of listlessness and smugness was so vile.

Arthur, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just bought it, heard it once.
It's very... slow. Hazily, druggedly languid. All the way through. Pretty, like Vespertine but without the Ice Palace sparkle.

DavidM, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's terrible, i have heard about half of it on the college station here, dreary, leaden tunes without any hint of inspiration. safe to say colm had little to do with the success of mbv.

keith, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seeing how shirley manson has turned into a 2nd-tier hope sandoval- wannabe, just buy the new garbage instead. at least you'll get some trashy r&b "beats" here and there too

Vic, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

obviously if you don't like dreary stuff you won't like this. I wouldn't say it's leaden though, it's got a pretty light, wispy feel to it. Good but not awesome. She does have a nice voice, and she has dropped some of the vocal affectations from mazzy star.

seven years pass...

Finally, a new album has been announced. Through The Devil Softly due out Sept. 1.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 9 July 2009 01:13 (sixteen years ago)

Cool. I've been listening to the first Mazzy Star and a few tracks off of Bavarian Fruit Bread (On the Low, Suzanne) a lot recently.

Is Colm still on board?

timelord of the internet (Z S), Thursday, 9 July 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

lol "7 years pass" ... Colm is still on board

tylerw, Thursday, 9 July 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

i think Bavarian Fruit Bread is great, listened to that as much as any mazzy record

tylerw, Thursday, 9 July 2009 01:27 (sixteen years ago)

Me too. I was in a cave until 1998 so I didn't get around to listening to Mazzy Star until a few weeks ago. I like it, but yeah, I like Bavarian Fruit Bread just as much.

I've been waiting forever for a new Hope Sandoval album. Will it feature the all star line up on the first solo album? Can't wait to hear it.

Jacob Sanders, Friday, 14 August 2009 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think I've played the Bavarian Fruit Bread album since Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (7 years ago) tbh.

(7 - or 8 - years? shiiiit)

DavidM, Friday, 14 August 2009 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

I've listened to Through The Devil Softly once through, and it's sublime. Not much has changed, but I wasn't wanting a changed. She can keep making dreamy soft music like this. Maybe this album is the folkiest?

Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 15 August 2009 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

'Thinking Like That' has to be my favorite song, sounds like Comus.

Who sang like Hope Sandoval before Hope Sandoval? Cos there sure are a lot of people who sing like her now.

Isn't there a new Mazzy Star album coming out soon? I loved that 2001 solo record, btw.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 29 December 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

That's kind of amazing. How have I never heard The Paris Sisters before?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 29 December 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

more sarah cracknell than hope sandoval, but wow it's good.

There's a new Hope Sandoval record! Any one excited or heard anything about the sound?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 00:17 (nine years ago)

I haven't heard the new album yet but the single with Massive Attack is wonderful

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 08:24 (nine years ago)

Heard the track with Kurt Vile and I prefer Hope without a vocal companion. Music sounded good though.

Ross, Thursday, 3 November 2016 15:00 (nine years ago)

Been streaming on NPR for a few days now. It's all fantastic to these ears, esp that nine-minute dreamsong... http://www.npr.org/2016/10/27/499145209/first-listen-hope-sandoval-the-warm-inventions-until-the-hunter

jaywbabcock, Thursday, 3 November 2016 15:48 (nine years ago)

^ Nice, thanks! I love the Burial remix of "Paradise Circus". Perfect track to come down to at the end of the night.

Ross, Thursday, 3 November 2016 16:47 (nine years ago)

The new album is so good!

Ross, Wednesday, 9 November 2016 18:11 (nine years ago)

It is good in inverse proportion to the extent that it sounds like the Doors. Listening to it a lot, skipping some tracks regularly.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 18:42 (eight years ago)

There's a new EP coming out on Friday too, btw : http://www.hopesandoval.com/new/index.shtml

StanM, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 19:07 (eight years ago)

:) thanks. Huge fan of the last album

Week of Wonders (Ross), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 19:10 (eight years ago)

i like the ep, her voice is still as sexy as ever. i didn't like the last album though which had the effect of a sleeping pill on me. somehow an ep seems to be the right form for her music as a complete album is too long as usually there is not enough variation in between the songs, i find.

“Bavarian Fruit Bread” is one of the most perfect albums ever made if you’re in the mood for it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 3 July 2023 03:25 (two years ago)

Also better than any Mazzy Star or Hope Sandoval solo album by a wide margin.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 3 July 2023 03:26 (two years ago)

Terrible takes on this thread btw

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 3 July 2023 03:28 (two years ago)

i was once nurturing a zesty opinion that her second solo LP was better than BFB and all the Mazzy Star LPs, I will need to revisit to see if this feeling even remotely holds up

also saw her live touring that LP and it was an all-time great and beautiful show, which felt at odds with the general reception for her post-Mazzy Star tours (i saw Mazzy Star back in 1994 and they were also great and beautiful)
