new Echobelly! discuss!

I've actually only heard On, which is one of my favorite Britpop albums, and I want to know if this new one is any good.

(I realize there's a fair amount of Echobelly hate on here for some reason, so I'm not sure if anyone has been troubled to listen to it and if so, if they've even liked it in the slightest.)

Is there some sort of deficit in the bargain bins across the United States?

Taking Sides: Echobelly versus The Gentle Humming of My Computer at 3 in the Morning.

(Clue: The Computer is infinitely more interesting/entertaining.)

Echobelly still makes records!?!?!?

Buy Lustra, it's fab.

I do remember roughly at the time trying to get into this band's music, and doing to some degree, but quite quickly forgetting about them. For whatever sins, I always preferred Sleeper and Elastica, in terms of girl-fronted indie. Probably still would, though those two are of course deeply flawed bands. They did pull off several crackers though; I could name 3 or so songs from each that I love. Couldn't do so for Echobelly.

Could anyone who likes them try to outline the essence of Echobelly's appeal, just as a matter of interest?

The record actually came out in the US via Takeout records this week. I've heard an advance copy, it's a bit depressing - nearly every song is midtempo and heavy on the sighing. If you are looking for anything remotely Britpoppy, you're not going to find it. It does have a nice ballad called "To Get Me Through the Good Times" though.

As for Echobelly's appeal - they leaned more towards the Smiths then Sleeper and Elastica, while the lead singer Sonya sounds a bit like Debbie Harry. Um, and they were Britpop. The only record I can get into by them is "On".

Echobelly must never be aloud to return. fucking ever, I cannot stress this point highly enough. they bring vacuouse self satisfaction to levels that would shame eve macca (the cunt).

The track, "Dark thingummy", (i forget) was OK and I bought one. The others were very replaceable.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that dark thingummy is the one that sounds like the Delays single.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dark Therapy there we go.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I never knew they had a new record out. Where can I get it?

CRW (CRW), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It's called Gravity Pulls.

It's out in America, at least.

http://www.echobelly.com has more than you want to know about it.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Woohoo, I'll have to get this then. Echobelly are great. "I wanna do Great Things" etc etc

CRW (CRW), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

they never actually did great things tho...

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose, though, there would be no abition in writing

I wanna do alright things
I wanna touch the mid twenties in the charts
I wanna know about being a footnote in a footnote of britpop
is it something I do by talking about myself?

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I would agree Sleeper and Elastica were better.

CRW (CRW), Sunday, 9 May 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed.

Message ends.

I liked a few of their singles, but their "sell by" date has clearly come and very much gone.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i enjoy echobelly, though the last thing I bought was On. i'd pick up the new stuff if I saw it anywhere. it's interesting to me that they've kept going. i didn't know that.

outline the essence of their appeal? i don't know. i just enjoyed their pop songs, i liked the guitars, and i like sonya's voice. no big whoop. maybe some of the lyrics are a little cringe-y, but i think the feminist songs are pretty good.

back when i was getting into britpop (mid-90s, late teens still-figuring-things-out stage), i listened to them a lot. i bought their album because i liked their name.

"Car Fiction" = a sparklingly perfect song

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 9 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Insomniac. One of the best POP singles of all time.

CRW (CRW), Sunday, 9 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

On has a slew of perfect tunes, and it does boil down to the guitars and Sonya's vox for me.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 9 May 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, she was a feminist too? bwahahahahaaaa

"car fiction" WAS ok from what i remember - that's the one that goes "we can drive all of our fears away..." right?

i gave up trying to slip that into the pile of good stuff i was selling at the record store YEARS ago, along with the Christie Front Drive discography. Brothas weren't fooled.
