I LOVE The Scientists, obviously, but i haven't been able to connect with Kim Salmon's solo shit AT ALL. This weekend I threw on that one called "I gotta do my own thing" (or some such crap title), and lordy is it boring. Am I missing something?

It's a puzzle isn't it. I suppose he wants to explore new territory and just not do that Scientists thing for a while.

the records he did with the surrealists were great, especially "lightning scary" and "zero blank" which are classic aussie 45s. i do think his songwriting these days lacks a little spark but he can still come out with a good tune every now and then, eg "nothing can go wrong" and "come on spring" (the track he did as Antenna)

in summary, search the surrealists stuff, the rest is fairly patchy

I liked the Business record a lot, and Antenna a bit. Both of these have Dave Faulkner as a common factor, which may or may not be telling.

I liked that first album, Hit Me With the Surreal Feel. It felt, in fact, like a continuation of Human Jukebox, which is a fine pedigree around my household. The stuff I've heard since bored me enough that I soon stopped even bothering. Shame.

six years pass...

The new Surrealists album Grand Unified Theory is pretty fearsome (in a good way).

nb: it's a new Surrealists with youngsters backing him

saw them live a few months ago, was a bit ragged but lots of fun

That's good to hear. It wouldn't be fun if it WASN'T ragged! ;-)

I'm a huge Scientists & Beasts of Bourbon fan, but I agree that Kim's solo endeavors are a bit spotty to say the least.

Come to think of it, that whole scene in Australia with Salmon, Perkins, etc. was pretty freekin righteous.....
