I haven't downloaded any hip-hop this year. Where do I start?
I've already got Fatlip and Kanye West. I like great rappers
in all styles, but prefer undie/electro/backpacker shit.
Let it flow, people, let it flow.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 May 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

are we talking only full-length albums or individual tracks or either here?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 10 May 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's still ANTICIPATED, does that mean it's not out yet and people can't really reccomend it yet?

The Brother Ali Champion EP is what yr looking for!

Also:
Madvillain, Ghostface and Kanye
Murs and Trillville/Lil Scrappy
MTA2 and Dead Prez - RBG
Wiley, Lil Flip and Cee Lo
The new Young Gunz has some cool tracks.
There are a few tracks on the new Vast Aire worth seeking out.

djdee2005, Monday, 10 May 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wiley - Treddin' On Thin Ice

this is not sodding hip hop!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorites so far are the new Cee-Lo, the Kanye, the Madvillain.

I had no idea Fatlip had a new album coming out, woah.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

this is not sodding hip hop!

I agree w/ this actually but Scott PL yelled at me for saying it. Tell him I was right.

everyone else should check out the brother ali champion ep!!!

djdee2005, Monday, 10 May 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Any thoughts on the fatlip?

danh, Monday, 10 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

squirrel, sounds like you'd be into:

passage - the forcefield kids

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, so antagonistic. What was more anticipated? Back yourself up, champ.

The hits so far:

Madvillain
DJ Signify
Ghostface
Cee-Lo
Kanye
Ill Bill

And the Wiley is pretty cool though, but I'd say it's closer to dancehall than hip-hop.

djdee, i haven't heard the Brother Ali EP yet, but if you wanna put it up on a YouSendIt, I'll surely take it from you. I will still cop it, i just don't want to wait a week, frankly.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite new hiphop album of the year so far is probably either the Lil Scrappy/Trillville one or the Kanye West one, unless Death Comet Crew or *The Third Unheard: Connecticut HipHop 1979-1983* count. I also like Infinite Livez, Rammelezze, Clouddead, P-Bros, and probably some other ones that I've forgotten at the moment.

chuck, Monday, 10 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, here's two I forgot: David Banner. And The Streets.

chuck, Monday, 10 May 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and The Streets without wanting to invoke hilarity...

The Streets are not bloody hip-hop!!! Are they?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i am quite looking forward to the infinite livez lip, i must admit.

and no, wiley is not hip-hop.

streets are a grey area.

Commander Riker (numbertwo), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Fatlip album has been leaked on Soulseek, it's called _What's Up
Fatlip_ and it's amazing. Very sardonic and self-effacing - low self-esteem
rap is the best, it disarms your foes - "what are you talkin? I already SAID
my shit ain't tight." Kanye disses himself from time to time,
what are some other classics of self-hating hip-hop.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

When will people learn that genre boundaries are utterly inflexible??!?!

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that fatlip is OLD. REAL OLD.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, what's up fatlip? came out four years ago, didn't it?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It was supposed to come out 4 years ago, but as you'll recall he's on a label that's unstable.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

CHOPPIN BLIGGY ON THE TABLE

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Alex, so antagonistic. What was more anticipated? Back yourself up, champ."

Rollie, congrats, you are NOW officially the king of not getting jokes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Sssh Alex, don't say a word! There are still some potential victims to bait!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

what about madvillainy guys?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Did nobody else like "Purple Haze"? (yeah, not backpacker, whatever)

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

did you get an advance of Purple Haze before everyone else?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

arg sorry rollie i would but i just got home for the summer and no longer have high-speed internet. Its up on slsk somewhere though.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ta for the rj/diplo mix link .. i dont like streams .. but getting the full mp3 is a bonus. ta muchlike. for those that like the DJ Signify sounds then check out the new Sixtoo album in ninjatune .. same kinda vibes but not as spooky.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it not officially out yet? Jeez...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

>When will people learn that genre boundaries are utterly inflexible??!?!<

Yeah, sorry, I always forget about that all-important objectivity of genre definitions stuff. I will try harder, I promise.

chuck, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT I GET IT NOW

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to have that Fatlip single. I'd like to hear the album. I hope he still thinks he sucks at life.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

see why is it c eddy, d tompkins and such are more likely to rep p brothers than any britrap guy? i havent even heard much hype for cappo's lp last year and tho yeah obv i havent heard it but i bet its at least listenable compared to out da ville or whatever

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

>see why is it c eddy, d tompkins and such are more likely to rep p brothers than any britrap guy?<

um...actually, i mentioned both infinite livez and the streets upthread. don't they count? (or are you saying brit rap guys are less likely to like the p bros??) anyway, i dunno who or what cappo is. and i wouldn't know the p bros if tompkins hadn't burned me a copy...

chuck, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ok i seeee. (yeah i meant it the 2nd way)

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

cappo is a mc/p bros buddy who had his own lp last year called 'spaz the world' i think, i'd be suprised if he wasnt on the album u have!

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

cappo's the white guy, right?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

what are some other classics of self-hating hip-hop
"Suicidal Thoughts" would seem to be the top of the heap here.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

What does eryone think of the def jux presents 3 comp? Gimme thoughts.

PS: Chuck we agree on something! LS/Trillville is in my top 5 right now.

djdee2005, Saturday, 15 May 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the Rob Sonic track is fantastic...whos Rob Sonic?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh some dude, who knows.

I dug it ok...most impressive to me were the SA Smash track, the Murs track, the RJD2 track, and the Perceptionists. And that track about oxycontin.

djdee2005, Saturday, 15 May 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure how well distributed it is, but I'd add P.O.S.'s Ipecac Neat (on Doomtree) to this list. It's available in Minneapolis/St. Paul, at least...

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob Sonic is from Sonic Sum. they have a cool t-shirt.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually thought both th el-p tracks were terrible. I don't like him in storyteller mode like that. I also thought both Hangar 18 songs were great. I'll have to check out their multi-platinum debut.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)
