Florida vs Bay Area Hardcore

i am extremely unaware of the music referred to in the thread title. i would like to become more aware. that, dear friends, is where you come in. timeframe: 1983-present...

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 May 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

80's - Don't know too much about Florida HC except for Hated Youth. Bay Area HC was pretty shitty, but there sure was a lot of it. See the Blatz/Filth split for a good idea. 80's HC was shitty music altogether, outside of DC (and Los Angeles towards the end of the decade) maybe.

Florida had the best emoviolence bands -- End of the Century Party, Asshole Parade, Palatka. The Bay Area had Spazz (most high profile powerviolence band), Capitalist Casualties (generic), Noothgrush (sludgy), Godstomper (barely competent), Agents of Satan (don't remember). There was also artsy emocore from Mohinder and the like.

00's - I have no idea.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

that secod paragraph was for the 90s

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

80's HC was shitty music altogether

Pfftt!. The only HC that matters is 80's HC.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

well then, alex, tell me about it!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Kris OTM re: Asshole Parade, Palatka & End of the Century Party.

Florida also has to offer: Reversal of Man, Twelve Hour Turn, Strikeforce Diablo.

In addition to what Kris mentioned re: California: Man Is The Bastard, Swing Kids, Indian Summer, Antioch Arrow, Heroin.

My feelings on HC in the eighties vary widely. I like most of the early stuff--Minor Threat, Flag, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Flipper, etc, but with the advent of Youth of Today & co. in NYC, it all kind of went to shit. The "youth crew" movement ruined hardcore for a while, until it was reclaimed by early emo bands as being about DIY, expression and being fuckin' pissed.

i4n j0hnson, Monday, 10 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Florida basically had no scene to speak of until No Idea started, did it? I would have answered this earlier but I wondered if Gareth is/was taking about another sort of hardcore altogether...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I was quite as territorially-minded in terms of the bands I liked (though I must echo the praise for the D.C. scene). I tended to like individual bands rather than specific scenes. My faves: Circle Jerks, Black Flag, DK's, Fear, Channel 3, MDC, Bad Brains, Kraut, Minor Threat, SOA (Henry's pre-Black Flag band), Naked Raygun, FEAR, TSOL, the Vandals (Stevo-era Vandals, that is), DOA. I was quite inexplicably into 7Seconds for a long while (or at least up through Walk Together Rock Together), but Kevin Seconds' voice got a bit too cloying for me after a while. In terms of local NYC bands, I was heavily into Kraut, but by the time the Agnostic Front/Murphy's Law/Cro-Mags axis reared its head, it started to get a bit too ugly (and..er..slightly dangerous for those of us with hair) for my taste. That said, Age of Quarrel by the Cro-Mags and the first Murphy's Law album are fuckin' keepers. Going to school in the Midwest got me into bands like Toxic Reasons, Painful Discharge, Die Kreuzen and the mighty Necros.

I can't say I'm specifically familiar with any Florida bands....but didn't that morph into the whole Morbid Angel, death metal scene?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Also loved Code of Honor...however pretentious.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(Has anyone scratched their head and thought, 'Wait, *Gareth* started this thread?')

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Screw 32 and AFI flew the banner of BAxHC in the late 90s and had it printed on their shirts and mentioned in liner notes of records, etc. As to whether they should be regarded as true hardcore or whatever is a different story.

Florida also had Assuck.

Avi Roig (Avi), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(Has anyone scratched their head and thought, 'Wait, *Gareth* started this thread?')

Ha yeah, that was what threw me... I'm not aware of any specific link between hardcore and death metal in Florida, I think they grew up very organically and seperate of each other

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that notion was triggered by seeing a picture of Morbid Angel's Trey Azagnoth (sp?) in a Black Flag t-shirt...for whatever that's worth.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

In addition to what Kris mentioned re: California: Man Is The Bastard, Swing Kids, Indian Summer, Antioch Arrow, Heroin.

None of these are bay area bands. SoCal hardcore has probably been the best altogether - Stapled Shut, Discordance Axis, Gasp, and the zillions of San Diego bands.

I thought Assuck was from Alabama or something. In/Humanity was another good SE band, but I can't remember whether they were from Florida or not.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i know this is outside my usual field of interest, but, i do mean the genre being discussed here, and i am interested...

gareth (gareth), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think In/Humanity, reportedly a really great band though I never really listened to 'em enough to say, were from South Carolina - aren't some of them in Guyana Punch Line, one of the best band names ever?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Guyana Punch Line,
one of the best band names ever?

Hahaha

Almost as entertainingas Afghanistan Bananastand

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah GPL and I/H are from the Carolinas, but I'm pretty sure frontman Chris Bickel did time in FLA at one point or another.

Avi Roig (Avi), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Assfactor 4, truly amazing hardcore band, were from South Carolina. Their first record is better than their second, I think. The second is a lot meaner in attitude. The 7"s are all good as well.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ignoring Southern California in this Taking Sides argument is really not playing fair. In terms of 80s hardcore, LA was the scene. In terms of 90s HC, San Diego owned SF (aside from Palatka), a slight edge over FL.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, Boston may be the only competition to LA in terms of early 80s HC. Last Rites anyone?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget not the FU's and GangGreen, but the DC scene trumps Boston, methinkst

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll second the recommendation of Assfactor 4's LP on Ebullition (I THINK, could have the label wrong) - their song about how they love where they're from despite its rep is awesome

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 10 May 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the lamest Florida vs. Bay Area HC argument ever! I wish I had more than a remedial grasp, but I know this much: Get your goddam ganggreen outta this thread, I hear their corporate sponsorship calling.

In the early '80s, Florida had F, Roach Motel, and State -- the last of which crushes. Who did "(Fuck You) We Dig Nixon"? I need to consult the tapes.

If you don't count DKs, Flipper, MDC, Crime -- because maybe they're all too punk? -- San Francisco will still completely slay you with Crucifix and Attitude Adjustment. What about Frightwig and Tragic Mulatto?

Here's Die Kreuzen in 1981 (someone in this room would rather be listening to F):

Who did "(Fuck You) We Dig Nixon"?

Voodoo Idols

bobo, Monday, 10 May 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

F! yes!!!

the 90s florida hardcore bands took some of their inspiration directly from the tampa death metal. that's what a bunch of us grew up on in high school.

a lot of the gainesville crowd listened to stuff from baltimore (vermiform, vermin scum, etc), DC (dischord), olympia (krs) and the socal (gravity). a lot of emocore/emoviolence love. that's the stuff i remember hearing chatter about. "how do the swing kids play that fast?"

msp, Monday, 10 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I really like that picture

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Assfactor 4's LP on Ebullition (I THINK, could have the label wrong)

Ooooold Glory. Though like, it may as well have been on Ebullition. everything else seems to have been.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Flipper were hardcore? Was that a musical style, or was it determined by who came to your shows? If the latter, then the Cramps were hardcore at that time too...

no opinion, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point. Where most of their contemporaries were playing superfast, Flipper deliberately played slow'n'sludgey (a shtcik Black Flag would later adopt). At the time, I think the term "hardcore" was a little less defined than it later became (much like the term "Punk" before it)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

SHTICK

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

JONBOT (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

total letdown: (7/02 headlining for neon hunk, mammal, and hair police* and about 6 months before opening for lightning bolt)

*msg and i ended up standing outside in front of the club talking for most of their set.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

They were insane when I saw them a few years back with Friends Forever in Brian C's space. Most of the the lighting got broken!

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ian: X-Files: Songs in the Key of X "

Yeah, I always wondered what that cryptic reference in the liner notes meant.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

holy shit. i never thought i'd be seeing a southeast emo violence thread on this list...

good florida 90's/00's hardcore- palatka, end of the century party, true north, red ribbon club, assuck, reactionary 3, asshole parade, strikeforce diablo, tired from now on, burnman, (early) combat wounded veteran, the goddamn deluge, the k. shipley, tone locust...

granted, it's heavy on the gainesville bands, but that's where i'm originally from. most of us were into the gravity records stuff... oh- and everyone freaked out on lungfish too.
palatka was pretty much one of the best ever.

roy, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ASSFACTOR 4

msp, Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

noidearecords.com probably has it in their distro (they did last time I checked. also maybe try level plane?)

if you've no luck, e-mail me and i can make a tape of it the LP and also the last show they played in Providence before going on tour and breaking up.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

halo perfecto was damn good live- my band played with them once... i have the lp, but i admittedly haven't listened to it much.

roy, Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The bigger names of SF-Bay Area mid-late 90s hardcore include Mohinder, Honeywell, the VSS (CO imports), John Henry West, Fuel, Torches To Rome, Bread and Circuits, Yaphet Kotto, Portraits of Past and of course the near legendary power-violence bands: Spazz, Capitalist Casualites, Plutocracy, Agents of Satan, Benumb, etc. Most of these bands were contemporary with the FLA bands mentioned... the SF vs. San Diego debate is one that rages eternal apparently.

Scott G, Thursday, 20 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

♥ John Henry West ♥
