iTunes users! Possibly WinAmp users! Musicmobs is a good thing I think

I am a bit wary of 'things on the internet' but this musicmobs.com seems very good.

You upload a list of everything you have in iTunes (via the Export XML option, or possibly automatically via something called mobster if you have the right OS - I don't) and it creates a profile of all your most listened to artists, the idea being that you can poke around at what other people have in the collections, get new ideas etc.

I find it good for seeing what the most popular tracks by artists I don't know much about are. Except, err... it doesn't let you rank them across users for some reason.

It needs more people. At the moment, it is quite cool that by virtue of my liking Rhianna, Sons & Daughters are listed as a similar artist. And that the favourite band of the person who has played the Junior Boys the most is ... Iron Maiden.

Matt at scrubbles.net says it's like the Internet iTunes Registry but with better functionality and graphics, and I'm sure he is right.

I almost gave up on the idea of it, because my XML library came to 6MB or so, and uploading this on a dialup seemed a daft idea, but I went out for half an hour and it was all done.

When it grows, it will need to change a bit - it needs more sorting and searching options to be properly scaleable. Like being able to do Boolean searches. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Go on - it's like filesharing but better.

I've been using http://www.audioscrobbler.com for a similar purpose.

It's down at the moment though. Maybe not quite as detailed as that. It logs stuff as you play it, rather than in an upload. It's a plug in for winamp.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's what the mobster bit of it does, but you need OS 10.3 for it I think.

Incidentally, this is a list of the most played artists:

77693 Radiohead

63717 The Beatles

32330 R.E.M.

28434 U2

28285 Coldplay

28163 The White Stripes

25666 Pink Floyd

24228 Moby

23771 Pixies

23513 Dave Matthews Band

22472 They Might Be Giants

22330 Beck

21299 Nine Inch Nails

20435 Weezer

19369 Red Hot Chili Peppers

19168 Elliott Smith

18340 Bob Dylan

17678 Nirvana

17231 Tool

17087 Led Zeppelin

16942 Pearl Jam

How dreadful!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing about it being based around iTunes users is that they tend to TAG THEIR MP3s PROPERLY. So it's good. I hate all rival systems.

Well anyway, if anyone signs up or is already on there, let me know and I will inspect you.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus I think that list would serve well as a "most hated artists" one for me.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, well that's why it needs other people on it.

This is my most played chart, which came as quite a surprise. I guess it's kind of skewed towards artists with large discographies.

On the basis of this, musicmobs recommended MC Hawking's A Brief History Of Rhyme. It is clearly fantastic.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that list upthread belongs in the cliche'd college music thread.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 10 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Frühlingsj4n (Wintermute), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've tried uploading this at least three times and it's yet to take. I gave up...

moofman (moofman), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried uploading on dialup and it only took about 5 minutes.....it is interesting but the recommended artists are hilariously random.

David Nolan (David N.), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, as I say, I think that's cause there aren't enough users yet. But when I do find another interesting looking user, it's great to pick through unusual things that are high on their play counts.

Like, I looked for other people with Timi Yuro tracks, and ended up finding out about Honey Cone. Then I searched ILM for them and found someone pick their 'Deaf, Blind, Paralyzed' as their favourite track of all time. So now I've got something else in my Amazon wishlist (while I try to find the track through filesharing).

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha, i am signed up N. You are in my simliar users thing, even tho there's only all the obv ILM fave overlaps. Problem is I only have about 60 or 70 CDs on my iTunes.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, get CLUTTER! Clutter combined with Expose is a fabulously cheap thrill - lots of stacked up CD covers on the desktop, then they all fan out, and back, out, back, hee hee. Also quite a nice alternative to iTunes interface.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I think you or someone else recommended that before. I am bewildered at the idea of having hundreds of album covers on my desktop.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I am on this now: steviet.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My profile makes me look like even more of a tragic indie wastrel than I actually am.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I just found 'rodbegbie' via 'users who like Donovan'!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Presentation on this is nicer than Audioscrobbler. Top artists (logically) favors those who have short songs, as evidenced by my top 5:

1. Yummy Fur (152)
2. Thermals (139)
3. A Frames (121)
4. Maher Shalal Hash Baz (110)
5. Boyracer (96)

I rarely use iTunes at home, so this only represents my at work iPod listening. Will need to explore it a bit more to see if I can use it to find new things to check out. User name: fffv

Am I being dim or is there no way to search for someone's profile from their username? I just looked for JtN via a search for Donovan and was momentarily distracted and thought that the above list of similar artists was actually JtN's list of favourite bands. I have to say, I was somewhat bemused.

Yeah, I came across Begbie too - good old Rodders.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If there's no way of searching for a username, perhaps people should post their user number instead and hack the URL with it. Mine is 3945, so I'm at http://www.musicmobs.com/user.php?userId=3945

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Who the hell are Metric, JtN?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the opening post in my head in an American accent and when I scrolled down it was N.

!!!

I am reading a book called 'How to Do Everything on Your iPOd' what I got from the library. I haven't got an iPod but I know more about it than most people who have. I don't want one anyway. Monkey muck. I do want a new pair of earphones though.

I love it when Rod just pops up like that.

Why are you all listening to Lulu, you freaks?

Metric, I beleive, are the group Jerry was trying to get his Friendster pals to go and see. Or was that somebody at the Metric?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

iTunes won't let you play anything but Lulu after 5pm. It's a known bug.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just noticed that I've listened to The Platters one more time than My Bloody Valentine.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Dr C *the* Dr C?

I couldn't find Lulu in clickable form.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Lulu in clickable form

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, you're leading the pack in Lulu listens!

This is all very interesting.

Now I want an iTunes.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I seeem to be leading the pack in a lot of things. I am slightly disturbed that I appear on the overall list of 'top users', with 23000 or so total plays. You must understand that for me iTunes is my stereo.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wish they'd consolidate songs that have been tagged as appearing on different albums, and then allow one to sort an artist by overall most listened to tracks. It souls would make a huge difference.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

won't load for me either.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What happens? The upload just times out?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well no it just appears as if it is still loading, but turns out it had uploaded. Just looked like it didn't. Now I have another way to waste time!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine says it uploaded fine, but no songs appear.

I'm very curious about my results; I haven't used iTunes in months, ever since I broke my computer speakers.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Plug it into your stereo - it's the best thing ever.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i plan on doing this when i move back home next week (why i haven't replaced my speakerz.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this is embarrassing, sort of.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What user number are you, xhamrin?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened? I could see it, closed the program, reopened it and now it doesn't appear in the list thingy. Where has it gone?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats a user number?

My name is the same as my login here if thats what you mean.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't got worked out how to find someone by username. By nunber I meant the number that appears in the URL when you go to your page.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I have used iTunes as my stereo for the last two years, but my playcounts seem pitifully low. Is it cos I always listen on random?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually listen on random too (hence the high appearance of things like the Platters - the Lipstick On Your Collar soundtrack was one of the first things I added, for some reason, so it was on quite heavy rotation in the early days.

I think you must just be going out and stuff more than me, JtN. Or watching telly.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

This thing seems to be very slow..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not normally.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I have persuaded the whole world to join.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been to export playlist and created an XML file, but it only exported a handful of my files - it said that some of them weren't compatible with I-Tunes. i'm not sure I'm doing the right thing - if I should be loading my Winamp database, should I maybe go and find it first, and if so where is it?

I mean, it sounds great, but UH?!?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

When I do an artist search and then click on a specific album, the whole thing seems to freeze..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh - don't click on an album name unless you want to try to buy it through the iTunes store. I agree it's not always clear what clicking on things will do.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha.. Well I'm doing this from work (w/o iTunes) so I thought i'd get started by manually entering stuff that I like. Is that I possible?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Excuse me for maybe sounding totally stupid, but what actually is iTunes?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Apple's media player software.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah. Ok. And, also, what is the file extension of Winamp playlist files, anyone know?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Metric are v good, btw, N. Search slsk for 'On the Sly' which is pretty representative.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, Metric are great

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey all, Musicmobs is my site. Good to see some of you are able to get on and get everything working. The whole deal is relatively new (6 months) and I'm still working out some of the issues. As for speed, it should be pretty quick unless you try to use the site at 4am PST. That's when I've got some maintenance going on. If you upload your stats and nothing shows up, it's likely that you have an id3 tag that contains some weird characters. The best advice is to export a partial listing of your songs (top thousand played or something) and give it a shot. No guarantee that it will work though. I think the success rate is around 80-90%.

Toby Padilla (The Mob), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh - nice one Toby. Any chance you can implement the album consolidation / top-played by artist suggestion I made upthread?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Eventually I'll have some better sorting/grouping but it's probably going to be a while. Being the geek that I am, I've had to (just recently) pry myself away from development and try to focus on creating an income stream that will allow Musicmobs to scale. I'm trying to learn from the mistakes of sites like Audioscrobbler. It does no good to add a bunch of cool features if your traffic destroys your servers and puts you in the poor house. It's a good suggestion though, and next to some sort of forum, very high on my list of priorities.

Toby Padilla (The Mob), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hurrah for referral tracking!

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just going to ask...

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

:) yep, you guys have sent me about 90 hits so far. I'm glad too, I'd never heard of I Love Music or Freaky Trigger, but there seems to be a lot going on here.

Toby Padilla (The Mob), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

not entirely unconnected, but i am disappointed to see listen-to winding up. I was keen on that. i've had to remove the FT bloggers "listen-to" box from NYLPM. Nothing else seems to do this as reliably (not that it was 100%) at the mo.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

89 of those hits are me having a good nosey.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I uploaded. Login Fabfunk, but I can't seem to find this my ref number

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to have confused the issue with my user number talk. What's the URL you get when you click on your username in the "Welcome back, x" in the top right corner of the home page?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

this is the URL I get: http://www.musicmobs.com/user.php?userId=4060

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent - you're nowin my favourites. 4060 was the user number I was wittering about.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to sign up for this tonight.

Given that I always use shuffle, it confirms what I suspected, ie. iTunes keeps playing BoC and Ladytron for some reason (I only have one album of each..)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Always using shuffle is pretty hardcore.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I mostly use iTunes as a pseudo-radio device (linked to stereo) when I don't wanna be bothered looking for CDs to play.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I always use shuffle

And this is me: http://www.musicmobs.com/user.php?userId=4085

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i shuffle lots, but then if I hit something that makes me want to play the whole album i switch. using clutter has made me play whole albums more

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly is Clutter?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, I've checked the site out. Looks neat. Shame that it won't work on XP..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i broke mobster. listed as being "like Felix da Housecat" are The Field Mice and Stina Nordenstam, hem hem. among more sensible (ish) suggestions i should add.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

mine is: http://www.musicmobs.com/user.php?userId=4046

Is there a way to get your i-pod counts included? Because I use that more than itunes i think. And I wouldn't have been listening to Weezer except I was working on an article about them (i swear).

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the challenge is to find an ILX-mobster that DOESN'T have Loveless in heavy rotation i guess

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'in heavy rotation' thing doesn't seem to be very accurate though

i have both shins albums on it even though i'ce only listened to them 9 times

there are no beat happening or unrest albums listed though i have listened to them more than any other bands (not that i am necessarliy proud of this)

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The site will work with XP if you are using iTunes or Winamp (see instructions in the FAQ).

If you have a new (non first gen) ipod, it's playcounts automatically get synced to iTunes when you sync your music, so they should show up. If you have a first gen (like I do) then you're SOL.

"In Heavy Rotation" is only accurate if you have your album tags filled in AND there is Amazon artwork for the album you are looking for AND the artwork has been loaded into the cache (the artist page for that album has been viewed). I tried to be more general about it, but it was hammering Amazon too hard so I had to resort to just pulling the albums out of the ones already in the db.

Toby Padilla (The Mob), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

thats interesting.

i still think something is wrong w/how it counts things because, for example, i have listened to LCD Soundsystem and Dizzee Rascal at least 50 or 100 times, but it only counts 4 for both.

good site though.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I never signed up for this N. you ponce. I went out drinking instead.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm doing it and doing it. I even downloaded a program (mobster) which said would facilitate. I'll try again.

Metric are not very good at all. Anyone who says otherwise is suspect.

scottontharox (scottkundla), Friday, 14 May 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe Jerry.

In a desperate attempt to be one of the gang, any gang, I have downloaded Musicmatch Jukebox. I haven't restarted my computer yet though.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

gimme help!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm user id 4040 .
I had to upload an exported song list rather than the iTunes library. The library insisted I hadn't played anything ever!
I got proper results with a song list.
I really should export the whole library next time, but for now it's limited to the top 2500 most played.

Greig (treefell), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried my whole library. and an exported playlist and still, apparently, no joy. I don't really know what's wrong. I'm convinced iTunes 'most played' function is lying too.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

mm it seems to have worked on that limited playlist actually. OK I'll try get it accept the rest of my library now.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha OK it seems to have worked a little now but it says in heavy rotation are several albums I've never even heard never mind own.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and there seems to be lots of things missing. mmm. OK. leave, as is.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

PS: What kbps do you favour? (Anyone can answer but I only really feel comfortable bothering N and Jerry with such beginners' stuff.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

always 192 myself

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 17 May 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)
