Love 'em, but try here for more.

They can not compare to the genius of Romulan folk songs.

Commander Riker (numbertwo), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I fear Commander Ryker has imbibed a skinfull of Romulan ale.

Ten in the Swear Jar was excellent. Even better was the band just before that one: IBOPA, which I believe stands for "The International Beat of Palo Alto."
They had a 2 song 7" (the songs were later recorded in different versions for Ten in the Swear Jar) that just kicked my ass. I wish I had more recorded material by them.
Anyway, Xiu Xiu has some incredible songs, and some deadly ones. Seek "Sad Pony Guerilla Girl" and "I Luv the Valley Oh!", and the "Fast Car" cover.

thanks evanston! i couldn't do a search because of that 4-character per word search error thinga mujigger.

i gave a listen to their free MP3s on their website and really like "Clowne Towne"

i remember seeing Jamie Stewart perform as the lead vocalist for IBOPA (stands for "The INDESTRUCTIBLE Beat of Palo Alto) back when i was in high school (in city near Palo Alto) and saw that he had a lot of talent and charisma. i'm glad this new project has been working out for him

back when he was still in IBOPA, i went to Streetlight Records in Santa Clara to pick up a couple of their CDs and the girl at the register then told me that Jamie was working at the store and screamed for him to come over. at this point, i was kinda embarassed, but went with the it and asked him to autograph my CDs. i forget what his message said--something about me being "fabulous" or "fierce"...or one of those cross-dresser type buzz words, then he complimented me on the other CDs i was purchasing. i think he was WAY more embarassed than i was, though.

I loved the original lineup. Something about the chaotic quartet dynamic.

I think one of the more accurate (and entertaining) things I've seen said about them is that they're a great band to listen to while alone, and a comical band to listen to with others.

Evanston Wade (EWW), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Evanston OTM... I made a mix CD for my friend for his birthday and he put it on for his party. It was mostly goodtimepartymusic, but for the last track I put "Ian Curtis Wishlist." I was in a shit mood, so when it finally got to my miserable party anthem the synths in the opening brought me a great momentary relief. When he started singing people got real uncomfortable for a minute and then someone said "Tee hee... somebody's in a bad mood." What a fucking awful feeling. That is the genius of Xiu Xiu.

God, they just fucking suck. They suck. Suck suck suck suck suck. It sounds like the shit some friends and I have come up with when bored and stoned, except we weren't as ridiculously self-important and angsty. Ugh.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 6 September 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

uh no. xiu xiu make good songs. that's a fact.

seahorse genius (seahorse genius), Monday, 6 September 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I half agree. Xiu Xiu served up some steaming hot bullshit pies on its first two records before Jamie Stewart hit his stride with the Fag Patrol EP. Fabulous Muscles is fucking GREAT; I much prefer what he's been doing after willfully minimizing the contributions of the other band members.

ng, Monday, 6 September 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

uh no. xiu xiu make good songs. that's a fact.

That's right, your opinion is a fact. Nice one.

i lessthanthree the original lineup so fucking much... everything since is way too limp.wanky. the cover of "ceremony" is untouchable.

a new(ish) obsession. They're great! and thats a fact, Andrew!

Their songs bore me. They have no form.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 23 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm a fan of their form. I like their melodies and song structures. They're good to listen to alone. Also, they use neat percussion and variety of instrumentation.

I disagree with ng, Fab Muscles is their most unaffecting effort. Fag Patrol is pretty weak, with a few exceptions.

I'd like to hear some of the shit Andrew and his friends came up with when they were bored and stoned.

Palpatean Mists, Saturday, 23 July 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Xiu Xiu are great if you realize the entire thing's a put-on. Related, sorta; Jamie's a good friend of a friend who lives up in Campbell, and yesterday he left a voicemail on my friend's phone. Evidently he's trapped in Yosemite, because of the mudslide. The message says, "I'm just trapped here in my car, with the mudslide. But I'm gonna rock it out with Joey and Steve until the mudslide goes away."

smetric, Saturday, 23 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

They're probably the most original band that I just don't get -- yet.
I can't enjoy them, but I can't dislike them, either. Rarely do bands fall in that thin crack.

(A friend of mine compared them to Human Drama, buuuuut I dunno..)

what's the sound of one hand farting?

?ÎÓDDDJHKHVBNM (eman), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I just listening to "Ian Curtis Wishlist" mostly because of the title, to give these guys a chance. I'd rather listen to Flying Saucer Attack, and that's saying something. Even if it's a put on it's too tedious to even be funny. Holy cow, it's boring!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 24 July 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

dang, Orbit. that's a classic track! "tedious"

Palp, Sunday, 24 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

no kidding. Also, as much as i love the last few albums, they'll never top Knife Play for its chaos and turmoil.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Sunday, 24 July 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I still think they're at their best when they're writing bustling, demented little pop songs (e.g. pretty much all of fab Muscles, "Bog People," etc.)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

what do you think "hives hives hives" and "i broke up" are?

Fetchboy (Felcher), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Someone please direct me to these "bustling, demented little pop songs" because all the songs I've heard sound like uninventive noise. "Ian Curtis Wishlist" included. I too am trying to give them a chance because of that title :(((

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

curtis, i consider most of knife play to be "bustling, demented little pop songs." A bit noisy and falling apart? yes. but the hooks are unforgettable IMHO.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

actually, i take that back, i don't think they're all that little.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

aww dip!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

For the uninitiated, I couldn't imagine a worse introduction to Xiu Xiu than "Ian Curtis Wishlist".

"Bustling, demented little pop songs" -- lots to choose from, start with "Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl", "Jennifer Lopez", "Bog People", "I Luv the Valley", "Crank Heart", and their cover of "Ceremony".

For the quieter stuff that's being dismissed as tedious or what have you ... I think their version of "Fast Car" is the litmus test. If you "get" that, then you like Xiu Xiu, period.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

i like 'em

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

I like the first album.

Tumililingan (ex machina), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

yes, i much prefer when they do "song" songs.

good songs to get:

"I Broke Up"
"Hives Hives"
"Suha"
"Poe Poe"
"Homonculus"
"Jennifer Lopez"
"Sad Pony Guerilla Girl"
"Apistat Commander"
"Crank Heart"
"I Luv The Valley OH!"
"Fabulous Muscles"
"Clover"
"Pox"
"Bog People"

been trying to get into this guy for years, just thinking that perhaps if i try "dear god, i hate myself" one more time than perhaps it'll click for me. the shaky, nervous vocals just grate on me - which i don't understand myself, considering ian curtis/paul banks are a couple of my favorites.

kelpolaris, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago)

Listen to the Air Force!

black redhead (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 28 November 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago)

the difference, i think, really lies in the the fact that xiu xiu's seem so forced; as if he doesn't understand what whinneying he should attempt next in order to give things a lil variety. there's never a point where i feel like i'm truly enjoying his voice, if that's a criticism i can make about intentionally uneasy music

kelpolaris, Wednesday, 28 November 2012 18:44 (twelve years ago)

Not sure why Always got slept on, I think it's his best since Fabulous Muscles.

listening to the new Xiu Xiu because CAD made a comment linking him to John Grant and, while this is actually kind of great, I don't really hear it as being anywhere near the same universe (let alone one where Grant is the goofier of the two)

I feel like Always is potentially more in your wheelhouse, though admittedly I'm not that fond of Angel Guts on first listen.

And yeah I don't get the John Grant thing at all, Stewart's on a whole other tip. About the only thing they have in common is outrage, and even that they express very differently.

Already preordered without listening to the single. Just listened, I dig it, though will take a while to sink in like most of their stuff. So thankful to have a band like Xiu Xiu in this life, still active 15+ years on.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 16 November 2016 23:39 (eight years ago)

That's some terrible promotional doublenewspeak: "All of this frantic, external activity lead to a softly damaged dreaminess and broadened intent that has not been heard before in other Xiu Xiu works.". I'd say there'd been quite a lot of damaged dreaminess in Xiu Xiu before and as for "broadened intent" I'm really not getting that.

I wouldn't call it "one of the catchiest boogie pop gems in the Xiu Xiu catalog" though: I can list about ten tracks that're far more infectious than this. It's going to take a few listens as with all their stuff but doesn't seem like any kind of departure really. Sort of along the same lines of Always which had its share of very poppy songs on it (Hi and Honey Suckle in particular, with even the Ian Curtis Wishlist number of the record I Luv Abortion being shortened down quite drastically), just here the poppiness comes from the use of 10's pop production tropes rather than being chock full of hooks in odd places the way that, say, Smear The Queen is or Stupid In The Dark.

Dan.S., Thursday, 17 November 2016 00:18 (eight years ago)

otm. it sounds very contemporary but not immediately grabbing or hooky. that's why i love The Air Force so much more than any of the other records, the songs are really strong and are presented very plainly. Save Me Save Me, Hello from Eau Claire, Vulture Piano, even Boy Soprano are much catchier than this.
