Just released - its the one he was selling CDR copies of for the past year. I'm unbelievably psyched - how bout you??

'SOK. But Hood's on such a roll that I still find its demo-like charms pretty rewarding. It's a lot older than a year, too. He recorded it before SRO even came out.

I'm even more psyched about the new Drive-By Truckers album, out this August (!). Called "The Dirty South." How is it that no one has used that title before?

Timbaland named a mixtape that

man, it wouldn't take much to convince wifey and i to follow them around the country, Grateful Dead-style.

Best. Live. Band. Ever.

I'm relatively excited, but one of the reasons I like DBT is 'cause of their bombast and sonic assault. I hope the songs will stand on their own. Just think of 'Somethings Gotta Give,' 'Women Without Whiskey' or 'Let There be Rock,' without the band behind; they kind of lose their luster. But then again 'Heathens' has a pretty sparse arrangement so.

The Patterson Hood album is ok, though it reaffirmed how much I love the sound of the DBT (57 7th OTM). While he's their most affecting songwriter personally (though Cooley has his winners and Isbell is at least more listenable than that Malone guy), a lot of these songs could use their kick. "Cat Power," "Miss Me Gone," "Pay No Attention To Alice" are some personal highlights.

Is it true that Earl Hicks has left the band? I saw 'em last year and his on-stage manner totally won me over (well that and absolutely smoking versions of "This Highway's Mean" and "Women and Whisky")

Even (actually a lot) duller than that all-ballad-almost Drive By Truckers album last year (which at least had plenty tunes on it, lackk of energy or no.) It's nice that that Patterson covers that song about "Alice" by Tom T.Hall (about the only thing that jumps out of the album at me, but Tom sang it way better. I checked -- start with *The Essential Tom T. Hall,* get *In Search of a Song* next, and work from there.)

I like the album, but yeah, there are some throwaways, like the horrendous "Belinda Carlisle Diet". "Miss Me Gone" and "Rising Son" are really strong. He seems a bit obsessed with Chan Marshall, doesn't he?

abegrand, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that Cat Power stuff could explain a lot about why his/ their music rocks so much less than it used to, come to think of it...

chuck, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

is this the same thing he put out in 2001 or is it something new?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Same thing, but remastered by David Barbe.

It's old. I think he just got tired of burning copies to sell at shows and had New West do it for him. But he's been pretty low-key about it. I think it's almost raw enough to count as a pre-demo demo.

Yeah, and no more Earl Hicks. But, on the other hand, Isbell's wife is the new bassist, which adds a new twist to their Southern Rock thing. When I saw them last, Isbell requested that chicks in the audience flash *her*. Quoth Cooley: "And no man titties, either!"

(Per Matos: yeah, but how weird that the only other release named "Dirty South" was a Timbaland mix tape? You'd think there would be more albums called "The Dirty South" then, say, "Up")

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

wow i heard about that hicks thing...bummer. but i'm interested to see how Isbell's wife handles things! DBT always seemed a very 'male' band to me - its kinda like having a girl in Guided By Voices, no?

Either way, psyched for all of it

she was holding it down pretty well when i saw 'em in Athens a couple of months ago...patterson's cd is solid but shouldn't really be held up next to the dbt stuff cuz it was just an impromptu thing he did on his own...the new dbt stuff, however, sounds amazing from what i've heard so far, they played four new songs on KEXP earlier this year and two of those (Isbell's Danko/Manuel and Cooley's Daddy's Cup) were instant classics, Cooley's Where the Devil Don't Stay was almost as terrific, and Hood's Putting People on the Moon was solid and will probably sound better on the album. Also, you can hear a demo of Cooley's Carl Perkins' Cadillac on the band's web site, and that's another gem right there.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There should be a Goodie Mob cover on the next album.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Danko / Manuel??" Is the new album going to have songs about The Band on it?

Maybe they could call one "Robbie Robertson (Is Full of Shit)."

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

amazing that this was never bumped for 'murdering oscar'

its a little too much like a dbt record for my taste, part of the charm of killers & stars was how it felt like his nebraska or something, now that he's plugged in with a band it doesn't sound that far removed from his stuff on the last couple dbt's albums

still better than go-go boots imo though

fourteen years pass...

Very late to this, but the new one, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams, is so, so good. I caught DBT at Pier 17 over the summer, but now I really, really regret Hood's solo show earlier in the year.
