I think this is an absolutely magical record, but I got it off slsk, have never seen it in a shop and don't know much about it.

I think it has something to do with carl craig - what's the story? What's the concept?

Carl Craig forms a band and covers old soul classics, think he acts as arranger/producer etc, as far as I know.

That's just my quick capsule take on it. Is the album good then? I really love Think Twice.

You should be able to find more info here. I listened to it streaming online once...most of it was just in one ear out the other, but the drums and Regina Carter sounded great.

It has its moments.

cough

Yeah, but the answers on ilm are so much more interesting than amg.

Anyway, I love that "there is a god" track with the piano combined with country-style violin...

Aww, Karriem Riggins is on that shit. He's like my a hero, a guy who's actually as good a jazz drummer as he is a hip-hop producer (I still won't listen to Slum Village though).

This is the second in a series of projects by Ropeadope, the first of which was The Philadelphia Experiment, which was a straight jazz trio record featuring Christian McBride, Uri Caine, and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson.

The Detroit Experiment is way better though. I can't remember the lady jazz violinist player's name that's on there (Victoria something?) but she's SMOKIN.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, okay, Regina Carter. I wasn't even close.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'd heard Regina before and liked her and all, but when that track came on I was like "Who the fuck is that?!"

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(she's James Carter's cousin or something, btw)

Upon superficial listen, it struck me as very bland jazzy 'downtempo', but I suspect I'm very wrong..
