What groups/musicians can you forgive just about anything (even if its a bit crappy really)?

Andrew L, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Inspired by the Sonic Youth thread - although there are peaks are troughs in the SY discog, I like pretty much everything they have ever done ever, and can't really imagine what they would have to do to make me NOT like 'em.

Andrew L, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no one, really. I'm often let down by my favorite artists, and have no problem with stating it.

Melissa W, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc Bolan.

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Iggy Pop's "Zombie Birdhouse" is great - contrary to what everyone else says. I can't admit that it's anything but great, so I don't know if it's truly crappy... I think eveyone else is fucked.

I also like Bowie's Tin Machine stuff and "Let's Dance." (Although "Tonight", I think it was called, still sucks.) ..and yes, they are substandard. Although Bowie on a bad day is way better than a lot of people.

Dave225, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard James Brown records that I didn't especially like (lots of them), or actively hated (a couple), but never any I wasn't glad I'd heard. The bad stuff illuminates the good stuff, for me.

Douglas, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Redd Kross

Arthur, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Firstly, I agree that Ig's ZOMBIE BIRDHOUSE is great. C'mon - "Run like a Villain"? Great stuff.

No surprises here -- I'll forgive Killing Joke their lesser moments (BRIGHTER THAN A THOUSAND SUNS' attempts at going commercial, OUTSIDE THE GATE's limitless siliness), if only because I feel they're capable of greatness.

Similarly, I'll forgive XTC's yawnsome later work in the face of their earlier, more energetic stuff.

Even on Miles Davis's not-famous, between-groups records before the second quintet I always get something from his phrasing and from the rhythm sections.

Actually, the same goes for a whole lot of jazz...there's always SOMETHING to be learned/enjoyed from some part of the group or tune.

Jordan, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still buy Manics albums.

Ally, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually gave "Zombie Birdhouse" a listen again maybe a month ago. Yes, "Run Like a Villian" is pretty great. The rest of the album really isn't. Come on, who plays it all the way through?

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not merely am I blind to the Smashing Pumpkins' nonexistent faults, I just got tickets to see Billy C.'s new band, which is allegedly nothing but prog-inspired 20-minute bizarro jam sessions. Woohoo!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor, poor Ned.

Sean, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

THE TRUE POETS OF ZWAN...really now, Ned. That's just unacceptable.

Melissa W, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fiddle on you both. ;-) The band could be called The Tall Bald Git and His Trained Monkeys for all I care.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Courtney Love. I don't want to start something & I've seen how that tends to happen every time she's mentioned anywhere in any context.. which is AWESOME as far as I'm concerned. She's the best.

daria gray, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been told (mainly by ILMers) that Frank Zappa had many faults, to which I am completely oblivious. Whatever the truth about that, I could put up with certain FZ things that I would never have put up with if it was another musician (e.g., "compositions" [as opposed to "songs"], virtuositic playing, bluesy jamming, etc.).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like all the Zombie Birdhouse talk. What about everything Iggy has done since then? Does that all get a pass too on the basis that it doesn't suck quite as wildly as Zombie Birdhouse?

I'll buy anything that Tom Verlaine puts out in spite of getting burned a couple of times. Same with Sonic Youth. Out of loyalty, gratitude, and to see where they're at.

dan, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Iggy's made a better album since Zombie Birdhouse. I'm keen on "Ballad of Cookie McBride" and "The Horse Song" as well as RLAV.

To the original question - the Go-Betweens. Even the not-so-exciting moments on the solo albums.

James Kyllo, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That GAP advert - It's not Daft Punk, just a pair of dancers wearing facemasks, right?

K-reg, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

juliet lewis in an AC/DC hat ? surely you can't forgive her for anything. i can't even forgive Haim Saban and Shuki Levy things like "lord zedd" "Turbo; the power rangers movie" "power rangers lightspeed rescue" they are bad and punishment must be meted fairly. maybe i could get some of the galactibeasts to take a dump in their swimming pool

bob snoom, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lou Reed. I own two copies of Rock and Roll Heart. Now there's devotion.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This year I've been able to take the major step of not buying a Sonic Youth-related record and even selling some really bad Sonic Youth- related records. I'm planning to not buy their next Geffen album as soon as it comes out. I'm even willing to concede that they haven't really been that important a force since Sister, that the last two Geffen albums are mostly interesting rubbish, and that the other Geffen albums are patchy. Disc 1 of Goodbye 20th Century is really good though.

Lou Reed though. I mean, all of it? Even "The Last Great American Whale?"

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nearest I get to this is Rush. I don't love (or even have) everything they ever did, but I do have 3 (three) of their live releases, so there must be some myopic activity going on here.

Jeff, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last Great American Whale is one of the best songs on New York, along with that Fly, Fly Away one.

Even "Sex With Your Parents" and even "Original Wrapper" in the Perfect Night version at least.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sad but true: Moby. And Prince, but only up till the last album. (We shall see about The Rainbow Children.)

M. Matos, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I have the exact opposite problem.
I get into a band, and buy some of there records.
Then I get into a different band.
Then the band puts out some awesome records....
...and I completely neglect to get them. Don't ask me why.

Lord Custos, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stereolab. I mean, if I'm really honest with myself, they haven't put out something that sounds any different than their first few albums in ages.

cybele, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo La Tengo. But they hardly ever did anything crappy. Ok the first album was really average. But I forgive them as they became more and more classic by every new album they released. And if they would release bullshit tomorrow I would definitely forgive them again. But they won't.

alex in mainhattan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody. But XTC is the closest - there are remarkably few songs of theirs that I can't forgive (most of which are B-sides). Underworld was at the same level (though I've listened to considerably less of their music than XTC's), but then I heard Rowla. I just cannot get into that song.
