I've been meaning to pick up a compilation of his
Should I just get the "40 greatest hits" ???

meister, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but be warned, it led me straight into getting the box set, which is pretty pricey.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a great CD of a radio show he used to do called Health & Happiness Time or something for $1.99 at a dept. store.
All his songs are pretty much the same anyhow.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Proper box set "Hillbilly Hero" has virtually everything and is £12.99 in the uk. 4 cds. I believe it's cheaper than the 40 greatest hits :-)

de, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Proper box is indeed a bargain. And you can usually pick it up for £9.99 when HMV have a sale.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

40 Greatest Hits is totally solid--it doesn't have a lot of his weirder stuff (like the Luke the Drifter singles), but it's an unimpeachable introduction to him.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, if you don't feel guilty 'bout denying H. Jr. his cut from his poppa's box, you can always burn it. 40 is great. The box is overwhelming. I love the weirder stuff and those cuts you just won't here in yer favourite drinkin' establishment, but it asks quite a bit from it's listener. Yeah, go with the 40 Hits for a great time and excellent introduction.

marbles cunningham, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that 4CD thing missing some of his biggest hits?

First set has "Kaw-Liga," second set doesn't. No contest.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Second set doesn't have "Your Cheatin Heart" either.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

All his songs are pretty much the same anyhow.

you're breaking my heart here Huck.

Buy everything. Greatest songwriter ever, fuck.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. I also can't see 'Jambalaya' and 'You Win Again'. Oh well.
I need to buy one of the many cheapie cds with those on them.
Anyway the set's still grate; the live shows are cool, and the documentation is full of info; pics, rec. session details, long bio etc.

de, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, that box doesn't have "settin' the woods on fire" either. perhaps a product recall is in order.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. No "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive," either, or (my all-time fave) "Mind Your Own Business" -- both on '40.'

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can do without Kalijah, or hwoever it's spelled, but those last three omissions are inexcusable. (Not that I am in the mood for Hank Williams very often, but still.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"I can do without Kalijah, or hwoever it's spelled"

Spelt "Kaw-Liga,", as indicated in TWO places above.
"hwoever" is spelt 'however'.
My pleasure.

..., Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

as indicated in TWO places above.

I know, but I was too lazy to scroll back up.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hank Williams, Sr

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite stuff from the box set is the Luke The Drifter stuff (which I heard many, many years after the 40 Greatest Hits stuff) - "Too Many Parties and Too Many Pals" and especially "Everything's OK!!!"

he's one of those artists you just need to own everything by.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

none of those compilations have 'angel of death' on and would hence be a sorry mistake.

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a box set called "The Singles" that's very good and has "Angel of Death."

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

In the world’s mighty gallery of pictures
Hang the scenes that are painted from life
There’s pictures of love and of passion
Then there’s pictures of peace and of strife

There hang pictures of youth and of beauty
Of old age and the blushing young bride
They all hang on the wall - but the saddest of all
Are the pictures from life’s other side.

Just a picture from life’s other side
Someone has fell by the way
A life has gone out with the tide
That might have been happy some day

There’s a poor old mother at home
She’s watching and waiting alone
Just longing to hear from a loved one so dear
It’s just a picture from life’s other side.

The first scene is that of a gambler
Who had lost all his money at play
An’ he draws his dead mother’s ring from his finger
That she wore long ago on her wedding day

It’s his last earthly treasure, but he stakes it
Then he bows his head that his shame he might hide
But, when they lifted his head they found he was dead
That’s just a picture from life’s other side.

Now the last scene is that by the river
Of a heartbroken mother and babe
As the harbor lights shine and they shiver
On an outcast whom no one will save

And yet, she was once a true woman
She was somebody’s darlin’ and pride
God help her, she leaps for there’s no one to weep
It’s just a picture from life’s other side.
