Rosa Hawkins has died aged 76; an original member of the Dixie Cups with her sister Barbara Ann and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson. Their hits included 'Chapel of Love' (#1); 'People Say' and 'Iko Iko' but they did not receive the royalties due to them - Rosa said that they returned from a national tour to find an eviction notice on the door and the electricity cut off - "We had to call our mothers for money to pay the bills.”

Suppose sooner or later either Josefa or I will recount the story of that first record.

Do people know that this is straight up Mardi Gras Indian music on wax? I don't mean that condescendingly, I'm asking because I've heard (and love) so much of it in New Orleans, but I wonder if people generally view the Dixie Cups in isolation or not. And that's not to take anything away from them, on the contrary.
